That guy who fell over reminded me of a colleague who died doing his job marshalling trains. He slipped over on the ballast shoulder and ended up with his leg under the moving train that he was going to couple up. That train was only moving at about 2 MPH but he fell just in the wrong place. He wasn't even a risk taker.

Someone woke up with an empty tank of brains that day to think it was worth hopping on a gondola that was moving 10mph and crossing over then jumping off. Yes he saved himself 30 seconds but it could have cost him his life. There's no reset but on Real life, kids. This isn't some video game.

Damage seems to match the result of collision with a water truck at a grade crossing at Moorpark, California on June 28, 2023. The locomotive was heading the Coastal Starlight. The locomotive and some units immediately behind it derailed, but no cars toppled over. The crossing reportedly did not have automatic warning devices. @kennethhanks6712
@kennethhanks6712 Месяц назад
BNSF general operating policy is to do major power repositioning moves as loco consists, as do some other roads, but others will shift units in regular frieght moves but as always there are often exceptions. Railroading is more noticeable from other transportation methods in that they can move many freight or passenger cars with only a relatively few power units while air, truck, and water (with some exception for river barge traffic) are one-to-one for power and haulage capability. In virtually any transportation medium you are always going to have almost constantly shifting market demands where need for power and carrying units in areas will increase or decrease and the need to move assets from where they were needed to where they are now needed is almost continual. One good example of this kind of logistical dance routine is coal traffic where loaded trains from a coal region may need say 4 locos to deliver but only 2 to return the empties so you would have at one point a build up of locos that could be put to other use but back at the coal field you would need more to be added. Since the goal is to get as much work as possible from each loco hour the decision to simply leave same loco lashup on empties return might not be the best use of their time. Another example would be in agriculture where crop growing seasons can result in "feast or famine" for power and car needs that would then be shifted to other markets when need in one ends and another begins.

@10:45...... So does CSX have a passenger train? And question number two, where is the San Juan Capistrano Camera anymore?

Office cars yes, passenger service, no. Amtrak handles all the passenger services on CSX tracks.

@@SD40Fan_Jason If you would, could you explain a little bit more about what an office car is? That's a mighty fine looking train, with I guess mighty fine office cars. Is this a treat for regular employees to ride around in, or is this for the CEO to go around in?
@SD40Fan_Jason
@SD40Fan_Jason Месяц назад
@sanddabz5635 office cars are a series of passenger cars that make up a specific train set and wear the company paint. The purpose of this train is so that the office staff and more importantly, the board of directors can continue to operate from within the train. Essentially it's the business building on wheels with offices that have desks, telephones, filing cabinets and so on. Conference rooms where meetings are held, usually in a dome car atmosphere rather than a corner office in a skyscraper. But then it also includes dormitory services so you can retire from the office and not have to get in your car and go home just yet. The dorm cars have sleepers, a lounge, the club car and probably a gym or other recreational activity. And then of course you have gotta eat! So there's a dining room and a kitchen car to serve the folks aboard the train. Back before there was an Air Force One, the US president had an office train with all the similar amenities that were offered in the White House. That is where the standard was set for what makes up an office car train. In most cases if a president ever had to travel by train the railroad would be honored to let them take up office in one of their office car trains. And in fact when a president was forced to travel by train for security reasons that are unknown to the general population, that might even be our US president riding around in an office car train. Who knows?

@@SD40Fan_Jason That's impressive and thank you for sharing all that insight. CSX certainly puts their best foot forward showing off the CSX brand with that beautiful "office work train." It's great to see that this old equipment has not been put out to pasture but is still utilized for its intended purpose. With economics and everything so many companies have downgraded and downsized everything it's just really neat to see that they haven't done this to this train and replaced it with just a plain old metal box rolling on wheels if you know what I mean. I just realized that you're the individual who also clued me in about the proper ways to depart a moving train. Thanks for both! 🙂👍😀
@SD40Fan_Jason
@SD40Fan_Jason Месяц назад
@sanddabz5635 not a work train, mind you. A work train is any train that performs a duty or service to maintain or inspect the track. That could be a ballast train, or a TOFC with the MOW equipment on it. Or it could be one of those observation cars with the giant window on the rear and tons of electronics fastened to the undercarriage for scanning the rails. Most work trains are often short in length and do not return any revenue. They are also usually given a DTC or Track-and-Time block with the expectation of moving in either direction of that block instead of signals, unless they are just moving to a location within a subdivision and preparing to work. Now an office car train is usually a special train, meaning it's not listed on any timetable, and there's no slot for it. Back in the day when railroads ran on timeslots and timetables, a special or extra train flew white flags or markers indicating its status among the timetable. Therefore the office train is usually called an Office Car Special or OCS for short.

Hopping a train to actually travel somewhere is one thing, but hopping a train just to save a minute of time, and then having no idea how to properly bail, that's just annoying. It gives the real, good train hoppers a bad look.
