Nope, this is poor financial actions by the public. Interest rates were always going to go up, yet you never saved under any government (UK has always had the worst savings of the big EU countries) so it's Labour's "fault" too, you decided to have a kid or kids, you decided to get a mortgage you couldn't afford if rates doubled but you never cared to check if you could afford it if they did, you got that car, you refuse to move somewhere cheaper, you refuse to take responsibility. Why should anyone help?

@@Dynasty1818 Western economies have been swimming on consumer debt for decades. If it weren’t for consumer debt our economies would spiral into deflation. Then instead of decrying poor choices you’d be decrying a miserly populace. China is “suffering” this problem right now. In order to keep the Chinese economy growing government invested heavily in infrastructure. But infrastructure is nearing saturation leading to wasteful projects. Now their struggling to find places to park all their economic surpluses. They’re hoping to spark a consumerist economy.

The thing is - food basics are still cheap. Potatoes, rice, pasta, noodles etc. You can make amazing hearty meals with little ingredients - AND you don't need to be a chef! Yes, life is tough right now for many, but just start saying NO to those overpriced goodies that you used to throw into your basket without thinking.

Thatcher and Blair let us believe they had finally destroyed the thickle underclasses plaguing British society, when in truth they had merely supressed it for a limited period of time. I go to a community fridge 2-3 times a week. The piles of food the volunteers pick up were going to end up in a landfill site! It's amazing what I've picked up from there. You get one or two frozen items; 2-3 fruit, salad or vegetable items and as much pastries and bread as you like. Sometimes you get given a bonus item, like if they have an excess of bananas, they'll let you take a bunch or two on top of everything else. The food is still good. Saved a fortune on food bills. Anyone can go unlike food banks where only people on benefits can go.

Tip from a broke student: Stew should be your best friend. Potatoes are a rather cheap and filling base, and you throw in the cheapest veggies you can find, a cube of broth, voilà. Making huge amounts that last a few days saves you a lot. Also good: Self made pancakes, pasta with self made sauce, rice pudding. If possible, get your hands on German bread, sometimes Lidl has some. It's way more satuating than toast/your bread, the difference is huge. Also Porridge with fruit or jam is a cheap belly filler, a packet of oats lasts you ages

I hear a lot of young people want to emigrate, and I really hope they do because that could potentially compensate for those frightful immigration figures. The cost-of-living and inflation levels are out of control because the UK has become dangerously overpopulated and the monumentally stupid decision not to join the Eurozone and Schengen agreement has turbocharged these issues. Also, there are WAY too many car parks in our urban centres. Car-centric urban planning is horribly inefficient and we can't keep building new suburbs forever because we will eventually run out of space, therefore we should aim to turn all surface-level car parks into mid-rise flats and apartments while holistically making walking, cycling and public transport the travel of choice in our cities and towns.

Rising costs I've made cutbacks on proteins and got them more from veggies and/or beans for example, changed my diet a bit and saved a fiver or tenner here or there a fortnight, but I've never been buying steaks, almost always chicken and maybe some pork once or twice a month. Sure some weeks I buy gin or burboun or something and that adds another 15, 20 quid, but it's consistent otherwise. People spending over 100 quid on food a week are just absurd, and if it's because you've got a kid or kids, well, tough. It's not easy to walk to them with 4 children then hike all those bags of food home on foot. Getting a bus would cost a lot. These mothers should get together and babysit for each other, car pool or taxi pool. They could also oven pool and take it in turns to put casseroles etc in one oven. It's hard to be resourceful but older people know how to do it. Falmouth has a Lidl - they just need to get there but they also need to learn how to cook. I'm also mindful that many kids won't eat anything else but convenience foods full of sugar and salt. Not easy.....

I have been watching the coming train wreck slowly unfold for those years, and now we have a crisis in the western world. It seems no western country is untouched. Many of their foods were cooked by the wife, and came from local recipies shared around. Hunting and trapping was rampant especially vermin species like rabbits. Barter became very popular (trading)..clothing was mended instead of discarded. Large numbers of people were evicted from their houses and it wasn't uncommon to see streets lined with furniture on the footpath. These people had no other choice but to camp out as best they could.
