...wait a minute... Wasn't that Barcode Battler thing the toy that the US government tried to ban because it promoted wanton consumerism among impressionable children, as if the '80s didn't do that already? (Well, it was something like this. Wouldn't make much sense for something that needed cards with barcodes to sell in the US, unless they were proprietary.) Also, I don't know why, but I also heard that was compatible with Spider-Man: Lethal Foes, but I can't confirm that since that game's pretty solid as it is, and the internet doesn't always explain how it works. I haven't seen a single video of it working with that specific game, much less what it does.
I was always fascinated by the concept of these games, I mean generating characters based on random barcodes from products... if memory serves I remember reading in EGM that there was a specific brand of ramen that always generated the best characters... I can only assume they'd be OP if transferred over to this game? didn't know til this video that the US barcodes wouldn't work on a JP unit. go figure. (although if I remember right there was a brief appearance of a US version though I don't think it lasted very long.)
In the US I had a Mortal Kombat game with a similar gimmick, part of the Tiger Barcodzz line. I'm not sure if it worked with any barcode or just the cards it came with though.
This one is just weird. The idea was good but the excution was kinda bad. It probably helps that this is one of the few Sunsoft game they didn't developed, instead Epoch was in. At least the production value was high as expected from a late Sunsoft game. Shame that this is the only crossover game they made.
Sunsoft actually did co-develop this game- they had a small army of artists do all the graphics! And there is one other Sunsoft/Epoch team-up, but it's an arcade game which unfortunately is currently lost.
I remember my sister had a weird barbie branded bar code scanning toy when we were kids. we used to go rummaging through the pantry to see what we could make happen on it, when it decided it wanted to actually read a code.
you said pp. Yes, I love when games get WEIRD like this, even if they're not good. I would love to have this one on my shelf, but I'd have to get it with the Barcode Battler II accessory, and that would drive the price up by a lot... more than I'm willing to spend. I'd rather get the Hypershot machine gun... or the Hypershot two button controllers.
Wait!! Is that why I got a copy of Hoshi No Kirbī without a barcode on the boxes back?? Someone clipped it for battling with this game and peripheral?? 🤬🤬😭😭
