Agreed,one of the main reasons for buying a Toyota is the low cost of ownership. Replacing 19” tires is expensive, I’d rather have 17” wheels.
@silvertube52
@silvertube52 3 месяца назад
Right, and the 17 inch wheels are part of why the LE Prius is the most fuel efficient. I don't understand why people want to pay more for a Prius (XLE and Limited) that gets worse mileage.
@lennygarrison6836
@lennygarrison6836 Год назад
Just out of curiosity, how do you give the Prius a .5 point for having 19” wheels vs the 16” wheels on the Corolla? The 19” will have a worse ride, the tires will be more expensive to replace, and the Prius with 19” wheels actually has worse fuel economy than the Prius with smaller wheels.

I'm surprised you didn't mention visibility. Unless I missed it. The new Prius has atrocious visibility. Sitting in one for 10 minutes I felt completely blind compared to the Corolla. You can't see out the back window, the side windows are all squinted and probably 4-5" shorter than the Corolla windows, and the steering wheel blocks the gauge cluster (why?!). This factor alone made my decision easy, when I had been torn between the two.

The dealer markup for Prius is just insane. Haven't seen a Prius below 40k in my region, and many are way over 50k. For Corolla, I only saw one dealer with 1k "paint protection" bs, and the rest all have none.

I agree with your comment, I too have not seen a new Prius below 35,000 and that is for the basic LE model.. I live in Arizona.. I currently drive a 2005 Prius 169,000 miles, have no issues but simply was considering purchasing the new model Prius LE, the internet and Toyota was showing MSRP at $27,800 for the LE model. Was going to make the purchase but I cannot find that MSRP price anywhere.. Dealers here are asking $35,000 for the Prius LE. ALL BULLSHIT!! Really enjoyed your review. I feel like you hit the nail on a head with given 1 point per 1grand for corolla. Agree with some other people that prius started to position itself pricewise closer to camry than corolla. Was offered recently to buy brand new camry xse hybrid for about 36.5k out of the door. And if I would be faced with decision camry or prius I would opt for camry unless parking in a narrow areas is a constant headache. I feel that both cars attract people due to being hybrids and people mostly care about bottom line than about "sexy" factor. For around 6k you are buying probably 3 years worth of fuel. At the end of the day both cars will likely hold a decent resale value given toyota and hybrid names attached to them. I would likely myself buy a Corolla,but will give a credit to nice exterior and interior or new prius. If the price difference would be around 2k, I would opt for prius given hatchback design and its practicality.

Nice job guys! Good to see you younger guys dissecting cars and making comparisons. Looks like a case of getting what you pay for to some degree. Not sure how big your hill was for the 0-60 pull in the Corolla, but it seemed to labor. With today's faster traffic (and EV's too), too much sluggishness is a liability in some situations. If you don't want to spend that much on a car, the Corolla will also be inexpensive to own and maintain, hold it's value, and likely be trouble free. Been reading some whispers that the Prime (plug in hybrids) from even Toyota are having some reliability issues. Unfortunate. Keep up with your work and if you ever get a chance to network with guys like Zygrene, The Topher, Engineering Explained, Savage Geese and Everyday Driver, jump on it. Great to have a car community for people who view cars as more than appliances (although this test leans that way, but even appliance like cars have a role).

Nice review. Technically, well done with the split screen comparing the same segments of two different models. Useful and well done. Some addl commentary: Your choice to review the top of line Corolla hybrid vs prius, slants the deck. My suggestion: Review the LE Corolla. I got one for $24.5k, which should give a few more points to Corolla. Also: My current ACTUAL gas mileage is 57-62 mpg, which is better than you reported for either car. More points for Corolla. Also, on my LE I have the traditional non LED tach and speedo, and other gauges. I prefer this to the electronic stuff, which I find less precise and less readable. This would make a better contrast for your review. Neither car comes with a spare tire or jack, but there is a place for one in Corolla, and I have purchased a set. You should mention that.
@ackerrj
@ackerrj 2 месяца назад
Additionally, the LE comes with smaller rims (steel) which are cheaper to replace if damaged, and are stronger than alloy rims. Also, smaller, so better mileage, and other advantages, such as less expensive tires.

Excellent comparison. First, a correction. The cars that are out are 2023 vehicles. 2024 vehicles come out at the end of this year. Your video mentions 2024. Second, I have had the Prius for the last 5 generations. I switched in 2020 to the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. I always lease my vehicles every 3 to 4 years. As a commuter car, it was fantastic. Only available in the LE trim in 2020. It was around $23000 . I intended to get a Toyota Corolla Hybrid XLE fully loaded for about $29000 in 2023 when my lease was up. Then I went to the Jacob Javits Auto Show in New York and saw the new Prius. It blew me away. It looks like a Lamborghini. All dealers in the Northeast where I live are getting $4000 to $8000 over sticker. They are arriving at about one Prius to each dealership monthly. They only come with all wheel drive at about $1500 extra. My Prius XLE with all wheel drive and moon roof and the 12 inch info screen ( the latter is a must visually) came in at about $36000. I paid sticker. The color I received is a premium color and is, in my opinion, the most visually attractive one..the hot red color. The price difference of between the Toyota Hybrid Corolla and the Toyota Hybrid Prius exceeds $8000. It is worth every penny. I have been told by my dealership that there is a 12 month wait for the Prius. In the 2 months I have had the vehicle I have been stopped by over a dozen people, including those with the previous generation Prius who have given me a thumbs up. 👍 Practically speaking on a cost comparison and for commuting to work, the Toyota Hybrid Corolla is the way to go, but the Toyota Prius Hybrid is a once in a lifetime opportunity that people compare to a Tesla and Lamborghini if you can find one! I just put a deposit down today on a Corolla XLE Hybrid with JBL stereo at sticker. I wanted a Prius limited or even an XLE with the 12.3 in screen and JBL but to get either you would first have to incur a dealer mark up, er adjustment of $3,500 here in SoCA plus all the factory and dealer add ons making it over $8K than the Corolla. Lastly, I could not see the cluster through the steering wheel and wanted a moonroof that opens. I would have appreciated the heated steering wheel and vetilated seats though. Interesting concidering that I purchased the Prius about a month ago. I am very pleased with the car however there is one thing that disappointed me. The construction is a little weak in my opinion. I travel almost constantly with a service dog who will go from the rear seat to the passenger seat. In doing so she will use the center counsel as a step. So in the month I've owned the car there are three small tears in the foe leather caused by her claws. I understand that this won't be an issue for most drivers but for over $30000 I'd expect better materials being used. Especially from the Japanese. For comparison, my other vehicle is a 2007 Chevy Avalanche with leather interior and NO marks whatsoever from her claws or anything else on it's center counsel.

cant decide between a Prius XLE or Corolla SE Hybrid. can save $5k with the Corolla and still get good looks and better visibility. gas cost per year is only about total $100 difference given 10k estimated miles driven. but the Prius is still very nice. thoughts anyone?

I wonder if the new generation Prius redesigned the seats. I've driven both of the last two generations on a few occasions and they had the most uncomfortable seats of any car I've ever driven. Even more uncomfortable than Tesla seats.

The hybrid Corolla is available in a station wagon model in Europe but not here. This would be a ideal vehicle for North America.

You compared the "top of the line" of both vehicles - Prius - limited and the Corolla XLE. WHY? Why not compare: Prius - LE and the Corolla LE * The average consumer is simply looking for an average car price, a price that we/ I can afford and simply put " more value for the buck" Skip the moon roof the fake leather seating, cool seats.. Again, simply asking why did you select the top models to compare in both vehicles?

Automakers rarely, if ever, provide journalist with low trim models. The only times we have them are when we find them ourselves at dealerships and neither of these two are readily available in our area 👍

I’m an “average consumer”, & I DON’T WANT the strippo version. Just because they’re practical cars doesn’t mean that you have to punish yourself & get the most basic version.

Great analysis guys. I'm a 70yr old senior who has loved cars ALSO. I learned off u guys, I thought Corolla was a 2.0. If I was a Toyota engineer. I would have put a 2.0 in a Corolla & 19" wheels on it. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING????

Any noticable difference in the rear window visibility? Historically Priuses have narrow visibility due to the angle of the hatchback.

You cannot compare 1.8 from 2008 and the next gen 2.0 d4s engine from 2018. D4s or dynamic force engine is next gen engine with 8 injectors and electric intake cam. 6000 difference just for engine alone annulate in comparison

@dakkon74

Primes are near impossible to find, at least by me. I have yet to see one hit a local dealers lots. Also, the M3 is cheaper if you qualify for the tax credit. I lean heavily towards the model 3
@japkoslav

I went with Prime, but good luck finding one or not waiting two years for delivery. IMHO, for most people, who can charge at home, Model 3 LR makes more sense and is considerably cheaper, but I personally really do not like quality control of Tesla, their UX (blinker, shifter, wipers) and UI (I like buttons).

I think the Corolla is the better looking of the 2 all around and especially in the rear .... To me the Corolla is hands down the car I would buy .... And I can tell these 2 are your typical biased reviewers that seem to have their minds made up even before they started the review as to which vehicle they like.
