This brings back memories from my childhood. When I was young my grandma used to share ownership of a summer cottage with her brother. We went there on multiple summers. I remember throwing darts (not hitting the target often since I didn't really know how to aim and lacked upper body strength to get the dart that far all the time), swimming in the river (more specifically hurting my foot while swimming in the river), fishing (I was so disappointed about not getting any fish and getting a piece of wood instead. My dad cooked the piece of wood over a campfire like it was a fish pretending to think it was a fish to make me laugh. It worked and I laughed so hard while trying to stop dad from eating the "fish") and thinking that the toilet situation sucked (there was no toilet inside the cottage. Just one of those outdoor ones that you see on some summer cottages). I remember being so sad when grandma and her brother sold that cottage.

Leo is awesome Dave, such adorable child! Is your wife Swedish speaking? You yourself are already like 99% Finn. In my youth one was able to catch over an 1 kg perch - and it wasn’t even rare catch. Sizes has gone down so much since then and also the pollution of the coastal waters is nowadays so sad… all the best to you and family.

Do you think it's a bit ethically questionable to catch and release fish for fun and not for sustenance? We know fish feel pain and their mouth is especially sensitive area. The hook must cause them pain and something it can kill them, if it gets stuck in the gills or deeper inside the stomach. This means we are causing unnecessary suffering for fun, which should be against the animal welfare law in Finland. And it's probably against our own morals too. We wouldn't cause suffering for fun to any other species knowingly. Why would fish be exception. Maybe instead of fishing you could spot some bugs and birds together with your son and learn to identify them? And you could build nesting boxes for birds and insect hotels together? Just few suggestions for fun that can also be educational and beneficial :D Have a wonderful summer!

Why you think that he released fish for fun? All the released ones were too small/young to eat. And he clearly kept the bigger ones.
@Uniruusu
@Uniruusu Год назад
It sounded to me that they like to fish just for fishing's sake sometimes, but I may have interpret them wrong. Many people like to fish for sport/entertainment and don't keep their catch, which is something I find ethically problematic. I hope that's not the case here.

@@Uniruusu he spoke about British lakes where you pay to catch-and-release fish. But I agree fishing without planning to use the fish is unethical. Of course you can release too small, wrong species, very big (as Dave said they are good for the ecosystem and the species), if you do your best to catch the kind of fish you *will* use. I would like to fish little fishies, but I'm vegetarian and my cat is allergic to fish😅😂 So no fishing for me despite living by a lake in Finland.
