Gizmo is the main character in Gremlins, he's a mogwai. They don't turn into gremlins unless they eat after midnight.

I never understood the after midnight thing because isn’t any time after midnight? How do you know when it’s ok to feed them? They never really specified that 🤷🏽‍♀️.

The name of the movie is "Gremlins" but the creatures in the movie are called Mogwai

Gizmo is a Mogwai. Gremlins are what spawn from a Mogwai if you get it wet or feed it after midnight.

Mogwais are cute and cuddly little creatures. If you get them wet they multiply. If you feed them after midnight they turn into nasty lizard like Gremlins. Gremlins also multiply if you get them wet and they skip the Mogwai stage. Hope this helps.
