I think the biggest reason why the Simpsons drew so much initial criticism is that at the time, it was universally accepted that animated TV shows/cartoons were for kids, usually little kids like ages 3-10 or so...It wasn't until people started to realize and accept that shows like this are for adults, that people started to accept them.

Fun fact: The long ass song is a reference to Little Shop of Horrors. Audrey sings a similar song.
