He’s such a sweet guy. He deserves a better headline than that. They basically were trying to say something bad about Jaleel but he actually gave a very graceful answer
@KBM515 Reginald flat out said that "working with him was a challenge", so Jo Marie Payton wasn't the only one who had a problem with him. The difference is that Reginald prettied it up a bit by saying that "overall", he has positive memories of him. As Sara said, he was being graceful, but acknowledged that there was a difficult aspect of his personality. It sounds like he just felt like there was no reason to bring it back up after all this time and wanted to end on a positive note.
@KBM515 he acknowledged that it was difficult at times let's not skip that part and the other cast members had great things to say about her also so let's not act like it was all her
@KBM515 AT the End of the day Jaleel is extremely talented under-rated for his work and their jealous to this day of the bigger role he was Giving even tho it actually saved the show!!!
I'm trying to imagine these other bachelor male actors such as John Cusack and Leonardo DiCaprio who don't have kids of their own matching up Veljohnson's performance in playing a family man to a whole bunch of kids and treat them like if they can be their own kids.
@@daniella8400 So true. You won't get any arguement from me. Some people don't want kids, like me. LOL. Don't get me wrong,I LOVE kids,I personally don't want any. LOL.
@@Erikaisfavored Yes. I think it would be difficult for any kid to become instantly famous on a show. I'm sure they miss out on regular stuff normal kids do even though they are more entitled than most. But they're still kids.
I wish the producers would reconsider bringing this show back. I would love to see Carl and Harriette in their retirement years. Eddie following in his father's footsteps as a successful cop. Laura becoming a successful lawyer, and her and Steve happily married with children.
For those of us that didn't have a loving dad, this man meant alot. I remember crying almost every time he had a one on one, heart to heart talk with one of the kids. I soaked up every word I could. He was comforting.
@@postdebut6241 But you have admit tho that if it hadn't been for the Steve Urkel character, "Family Matters" wouldn't have survived and been as successful as it was.
1990 baby here and I would be so tuned into this show that growing up I would look for people with the same characteristics as the people on Family Matters. This show was my everything growing up. Today I have kids of my own and I pray that love this show like I did. Carl was the dad I wish I had and taught me so many lessons, that I carry with me to this day. My own dad passed before I was born.. So to see a man take care of his family, teach his kids lessons and be a great husband was very important for me to see. ❤
Reginald is such a class act guy. I miss growing up with these type of tv sitcoms. The world is a whole lot different now. We were always looking towards the future that we kind of forgot how fun it was in the past and wish we could have enjoyed it more.
Well said. I wish the same as well. Times were so much different but I was in such a rush to “grow up”, that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wish I could have.
I remember just dissociating, watching this show while my drunk mom and dad would fight and yell for hours…. watching this show now has me crying bringing back all the tender moments i so desperately internalized as a kid that i never got from my real abusive family
Feel bad for you but president and news Disney still encourage people little kids drink get drunk people don’t believe me drinking makes problems never fixes them
He and James Avery will always be linked in my mind as all time great TV dads who helped raise my generation. Glad he continues to get his due and recognition.
Lmao they did not just put the wrong picture of Bruce Willis at 2:33!!! That’s tiktok Bruce Willis impersonator! Lmfaooooo omg how can you let that slip E!
I just noticed that too, I had to stop the video and double take. I don't know about the TikTok impersonator though. It just showed that guy, then I paused and was like "Who tf was that? That wasn't Bruce Willis", then I rewound it back and immediately went to the comments lol.
I know what you mean.. These older shows were great and actually had a moral lesson to teach every episode.. They just made you feel good.. good memories with family indeed
“Family Matters” was a huge part of my childhood. It’s refreshing to see the actors behind the show being so kind and gracious to each other in real life.
Right?! This interview made me love him and miss the good old days when shows like Family Matters where on tv even more. They still play on mine though. 😁
I honestly never thought of him as the kind of person to have kids. It really doesn’t surprise me at all. If he did have kids, that would shock me more
this guy helped me so much, seeing how a real dad and family are supposed to be. It brought great comfort to me, and it was the same with all the tgif family shows. Taught me that my father was not a real father at all.
@@thegayestgoth Found the guy that can't separate art from artist. Does Michael Jackson's music suck because of what he personally did? No. The answer is no. His music was fantastic. Likewise, Time Allen and Bill Cosby are iconic TV Dads, and their art isn't diminished by their person.
@@macdaddymario Honestly with his grammar I have no idea if he's calling them terrible people or if he's calling Bob Saget and the other tv dad's terrible people.
The racist cop episode was so emotional. It was the first time as a kid learning of such problems. It opened my eyes at that moment that black families have a different experience. Love this show so much.
Gotta remember Jaleel was also a teenager. What teenager isn’t difficult. Esp when you become the major star of a show. Like how he answered that question. We should give grace in todays society.
K and he still difficult. Now what? Stop saying he was a teenager, of course he was. You know how many teens are in the biz and 100% professional, and easy to work with. Hush Fly over state!
I remember when Jaleel was on Dancing with the Stars and some of the male dancers stepped in to protect his partner from his anger. He definitely has some issues. I used to love Family Matters and watched the reruns all the time. After seeing Jaleel on DWTS, it made it hard to watch Family Matters again. I kept seeing the adult Jaleel going after Kym.
I met Jaleek White in Koreatown, California. At a Batting cage 4 years ago. He was a very nice guy. All my friends are Asian, but we knew a lot about old TV shows, I think Jaleel appreciated Koreatown he could actually blend in and no one would bother him.
Say it louder for everyone to hear....this generation is in DESPERATE need of wholesome, family values...all they know is the Kardashians and sleeping with as many people as you can. Their moral compass just spins at this point. It's sad to see
@@NunButIce1 just because someone is a tv dad, doesn't mean they were a great role model to the viewers though. Look at Homer Simpson. He was a horrible role model.
Having a side-character become not only the star of the show - but also of pop culture at the time - had to be 'difficult'. It was insane how popular Urkel was. Dolls, toys, image on everything possible. And you could rarely go a day without hearing someone use the 'did I do that' line.
He absolutely nailed the role of a great dad. I didn't have a father growing up but Carl Winslow did well to instill a lot of great and important lessons to me and millions of kids with or with a dad. Such an incredible actor. And to think Bruce Willis really put him on and the rest is history.
Family Matters was my FAVORITE show ever as a kid that and sister sister... I wanted to be adopted by the Winslow's so badly! Honestly Reginald looks amazing, he hasn't changed a bit!! 🥰
Oh,you remember,SISTER,STSTER !!! LOL. Me too !!!! It was a good show too. Tim Reid and Jackee. Family Matters needs a reboot-PLEASE ??? Did I do THAT ???
In case it was misunderstood, when I said "tell the truth", I absolutely agreed with what u said. I wasn't saying u weren't telling the truth. It's just something I say when someone is really on point with what they say.
Of all the iconic TV dads, Carl Winslow is one of the best and my personal favorite. He wasn't overly goofy, he was as stern as they come but caring at all times, and he was the prototype of what it means to be a good dad. As a white kid, Carl was one of the earliest looks into black culture that I ever got. And I think he spoke to us white kids in a way we really needed. Given how other black men were represented in media at that time, Carl was different in the best way and showed all of us white kids that black dads were just like our dads and we're not so different. And as I got older, I loved his role in Die Hard. Again, just a genuinely good character showing compassion through the storms. Reginald really comes across as that caring and compassionate person that will say what needs to be said, but you know he's not making it personal. I don't know how much he's actually acting when he plays Carl other than the not having kids part. The man has that aura of being a parent or teacher. When he talks, you want to listen because you can tell there is wisdom behind his words and a desire to see you be better.
Reginald was such a HUGE part of what made Diehard such a classic. He was the "voice of encouragement", kind of an on-camera audience member, cheering on Bruce Willis as he goes up against the odds. Aside from a memorable, but brief cameo in the second film, his character was a missing ingredient in the later films.
My husband and I started rewatching Family Matters recently and I can’t wait for our daughter to be old enough to watch it. Such a great show, I miss the shows that had good family values and great life lessons. Even though I am white I felt like I was part of their family growing up and didn’t care about the color of my skin. Was great to relate to people who were from a different background.
All of those 90s shows were very inclusive and the characters were lovable.. now a days they just put trash in people's faces and they call it inclusion
You're darn right to feel that way, that's definitely how it should be. I love it when everyone is included weather the family is white, black or etc.I had white friends growing up and had fun with them at their housees and it was always awesome to be included, so I guess we feel the same on that. That's the true embodiment of our country, not all that separation crap. Lol
It’s interesting to hear this. I worked 7 years as a Stuntwoman on this great show. Ive got so many pictures with this cast. I definitely was clueless to all the real drama. Jaleel was one of the nicest actors Ive worked with
As a kid I was lured into watching the show by Steve Urkel’s antics; looking back, it also had a great deal of wisdom and valuable social commentary. Truly ahead of its time.
I used to think the show was literally called “Urkel”. I can see why the adult cast members would be frustrated that a child basically highjacked their show, but you have to give the viewers what they want. And when the viewers are happy, everyone is making money and the show can go on.
I remember when Steve Urkel was introduced to the cast when I was about 12 that he instantly became a favorite to people in my middle school, including me, and we couldn't get enough of him. I thought he was the most hilarious character ever.
I was just a white kid from suburbia who watched Save By The Bell followed by Family Matters every day because they were both great shows in the 90s. It's only fairly recently that it occurred to me how culturally significant and brilliant Family Matters was. Back then to me, it was just a great show with many unique characters all centered around a great family who happened to be black.
I remember getting home from school and turning on the TV, and it was guaranteed that either Family Matters, Full House or Saved By the Bell would be on one channel or another.
What a kind person he is! He was the iconic dad role of the 90’s! My daughters of this generation loved watching that show and connected to the characters. What great television from that time! Clean, wholesome and great scripts!
No doubt, but i'm not surprised there was tension between Jaleel and the others. A newbie shows up and steals the show and the originals are gonna have some hard feelings.
As a white kid growing up in the 90s (now 37) I loved family matters, looked forward to it every TGIF. I even had the Steve Urkel doll with the pull string in the back. Great times.
My parents had us all get together every Friday and "Family matters" was the the show that my siblings and I all looked forward to as a family. The whole TGIF programming, but that show as the highlight. I remember in 3rd grade (born in 1982) one kid brought in a "Family Matters" book and people were kissing his behind to be able to check it out also. I am really grateful to have such awesome memories, not just of the time with my family, but also of the show itself. That was good entertainment and Reginald is an icon. And he has aged really well. I am so glad to see him looking so well too.
Wow, you can really tell he’s a great guy. He gives such an amazing energy, that I just smiled the entire video. Alot of us grew up watching that show and I can say I miss shows like it.
He has aged so gracefully and seems like such a kind soul. Family Matters, Fresh Prince, Living Single & Moesha were some of my favorite shows to watch as a kid.
I never would have guessed that he never had children of his own, because he played the Dad role perfectly....and they have tried many times as well, to have cast members throw Jaleel under the bus, and he didn't bite one bit....He is truly an example of Pure CLASS
Really miss this show and enjoy watching the reruns . Wish they could make shows like this again . He was such a good actor , always playing the kind , gentle but strong man . He was what everyone wanted as a dad and his grace in the interview shows the depth of his integrity .
Wish this was longer. Pure kindness and love coming from this guy. My childhood doesn’t feel so much like a lie when I come across actors/actresses from my childhood who feels organically wholesome.
Wow he’s lost a lot of weight, you can tell in the face. Good for him! Miss those iconic family shows of the 90’s like Family Matters, Full House, and Step by Step.
Crocodile Dundee as the chauffeur Gus, a jail guard in Ghostbusters, Sgt. Al Powell in Die Hard and Carl Winslow in Family Matters. The man had some amazing roles that he made his own, brought a lot of warmth and humanity to them all.
I absolutely adored him in Family Matters, that was my show back in the day, my goodness, nothing compares! It would still be so relevant and I’d watch it every day today if it still played on regular tv after work :) hint hint, and I loved him in Die Hard!!!! That’s SO cool that Bruce chose him!!!! Good on him 👏🏻 that was a perfect match.
I grew up without a dad because he died off cancer when i was 7. I´m gratefull that this guy was there on tv how a good dad is and hw to treat youre children thank you !!!
Love you Reginald . What a great guy. He deserves so much more. I remember his and “Harriette” characters on Perfect Strangers. We need more wholesome shows like this.
I’ve rewatched every season of Family Matters from childhood up to now. The best part is, now that I have children of my own we watch it together and they love it too. It’s such a wholesome show we never grow tired of 😊
That is so awesome, how lovely. I am sure you could go through all the TGIF family shows too! Step by Step, Full House, Boy Meets World..... it would be so fun to watch those again!
My late husband met Jaleel White when his best friend was the mascot for the Orlando Magic. He said Jaleel was pretty full of himself. Insisted on going out in the Stuff (mascot) costume. My husband's friend tried to warn him how difficult and heavy it was but he wasn't having it. After a few minutes he could hardly move and he did admit my husband's friend was right, noting how terribly heavy and hot it was in the suit. Lol
As a kid growing up I always loved Carl Winslow. I can’t say there is another TV dad that made me laugh or that I really cared if they took a major chunk of the episode with their character or story line other than Cosby.
one of my favorite timeless classic tv shows.. such an honest wholesome tv show that spoke to generations all across america and the world... i really wish there was more of these kinds of shows nowadays... so much positive vibes then, that are just a memory now...
