Over 11 days in April 2024, the beavers were very busy! We were lucky to capture the activities of a family of beavers as they survived a surprise Spring snow storm.
We set a trail cam on a beaver dam to see if we could capture any animal activity. We set up the 4K video camera directly above a spot on the dam where the beavers often crossed. Wow, were we ever surprised!
Their activity began to pick up before the storm... they may have sensed the incoming bad weather and their survival instincts drove them to gather as much food as possible. Watch the story of hardworking beavers unfold, valiantly trudging through difficult blizzard conditions and deep snow, dragging home sticks of budding poplar branches for the family to feed on.
As you watch the beavers, look closely, and you can see subtle differences between the animals. How many different beavers do you think live together in this pond?
Perhaps it's the beaver Dad or Mom frenetically working through the snowstorm. You can see how tired they get, struggling in the snow and pausing to gather strength as they strain to pull the branches uphill and over the dam.
After the snow melts, you'll see a couple of beavers peacefully enjoying an evening swim together in a pool of water... perhaps Mom and Dad could finally relax after the storm and get away from the kids for a bit.
As the weather improves, a notched-tail mid-size beaver appears... perhaps the family's reckless and rebellious teenager. Also, an adorable little young kit beaver appears with its playful, jumping, energetic movements... and proudly contributes to dam-building by placing a small piece of bark on the dam.
Will we see more of this beaver family in the future? We sure hope so!
