I was 18 when I went to see Niagara Falls with my boyfriend's family. A girl around my age was running circles around police officers with a grin on her face. I had no clue what was going on. I was standing next to the railing. I turned back to look at the falls, saw something right next to me to my left. It was the girl climbing the rail and jumping off the top right into the falls. It happened in a split second. I'll never forget that. I hope there is a higher fence there now.
It is a very sad moment when someone decides to take their life. 😢 Mental Health is a serious crisis in the world right now and we must be more vigilant to protect our children, friends, and family. The signs may be very small but when they want to talk, make time for them, no matter how busy you think you are. Listen carefully and let them know how your life would be without them. 😢 Let them know how much they are loved 🥰. Love everyone ❤
Well said. When I was young and feeling sad I would think of an airplane flying up through gloomy clouds and breaking through into blue sky and sunshine. It reminded me that things would get better.
We were on a cruise last August with Chris as cruise director. He spoke of wanting to leave cruising in 1-2 years then in order to be with his family more. So not surprised & good luck to him
That is Great news about the recovery in Juneau. Hopefully everything goes swift and smooth. That would be devastating to catch that on film, prayers go out to the family of the man who jumped and the family that witnessed that.
It is very sad for all involved. Something like that affects more than just the person that makes the decision. Now, I really like your camera placement for the video. High-level consumption of alcohol can lead to poor mental health, deterioration of relationships, and poor decision-making. With the cruise lines pushing these "plus" drink packages, casinos readily available, and expensive cruises not turning out to be the panacea cruisers expected, mental health can be severely affected. Maybe 24 hour thrills, entertainment, and drinking are not what everyone needs to relax and rejuvenate.

Condolences to friends and family and all impacted by these tragedies. Unfortunately, those who are very depressed, often do not show signs. Some people even act the exact opposite of emotion to hide the fact of what they intend to do.

suicide is real - mental health is real, vacations and ships unfortunately are becoming an (easy) way unfortunate and horrifying for the rest of the living family.
I feel bad for those families involved with the overboard people. No being able to go to Mendenhall will be missed. I loved seeing it when I went to Alaska. I guess he retired for a great reason.
Thanks for keeping it honest, by saying JUMPED overboard. Nowadays it’s usually termed as “fell off a cruise ship”. People don’t FALL off of ships. It’s a choice. It’s called committing suicide. 😢 Yes it’s sad, but it’s reality. Society needs to stop hiding it. Thanks Don!
We were in Juneau on 8-5. They mentioned that the dam broke recently and would probably break the next day. Did it break again? So sorry for for the people involved and the families involved with the jumpers. I just couldn't imagine ☹️
Not to sound hard-hearted, but I truly do not understand why someone would spend thousands of dollars on a cruise to commit suicide. This is just unfathomable. Maybe someone can explain it so it makes some sort of sense. My heart aches for his family.
The photons that are entering the planet presently affect the frontal lobe. Certain brain functions malfunction in some people. Neuro-melanin is involved. Earths electro magnetic fields are now broken.
I'm just sucker punched hearing this..I hate it because we who love to cruise , are going to feel the brunt of this..we'll have to be all enclosed ships so you cannot have beautiful photos and we'll be like a prisoner on the ship..omygoodness one person did it and now it's a ripple effect to be infamous
Good way to suicide, I suppose. It happens frequently enough. Sometimes, it's drunken stupidity and rarely murder but most choose to jump for whatever reason. I knew of one where a 74 year old man with a new dementia diagnosis booked his cruise in order to end it. He jumped overboard as the ship was heading toward Perth Western Australia. The reason I remember this one is because my husband had also received his diagnosis, and he said he'd do the same. Luckily, it never came to that, and we still cruise even though it's getting more difficult for him. These days, he at least doesn't think about ending it since he's forgotten that's what he would have done, ha ha.
I went to Alaska two years ago and loved Juneau. How does that flooded area effect the town? If it's the area that I'm thinking of, it's very close to the Glacier and Lake. It's not close to the town and port. I don't understand why going to the lake and Glacier by helicopter or kayak, or even whale watching boats that go there before or after their whale watching excursions would be an issue. If there was a breach in the lake, they just need to damn it up. As far as suicides on cruise ships, there is no way to stop people if that's what they want to do. Unfortunately they don't realize how they affect other people who may witness it.
