I’ve been watching The Facts of Life reruns on Logo lately and I never realized how many barriers that show broke. It may have been cheesy, but it touched on A LOT of topics that were so taboo and just not openly discussed on TV shows. Just today I saw this same actor (Tomas Byrd), who is playing Mallory’s boyfriend in this scene, on a 1982 episode of The Facts of Life. He was portraying a neurologically challenged young man who Blair initially had the hots for, but when she found out that he was, what they then called on the show, “the R word,” she tried to change him. Before anyone gets bent out of shape for my wording, my 26 year old son is on the autism spectrum, and he used to be categorized into a catch-all label called “MR.” Now that label is “ID,” intellectually disabled. I think that label sounds as cruel as people who use “the R word” as frequently as they use THE most common word in THE English language. It’s archaic, and it sounded terrible hearing the actors use it. Holy long walk for a short drink of water! I went off on a tangent when that wasn’t my point. As for Mallory, I wanted to be her. She was so pretty and funny. My parents used to compare me to her back then. My dad would say “Mallory lives!” When I inadvertently said something kind of airheaded. He would jokingly, but lovingly say things to me as if he was speaking for me and say, “I shop, therefore, I am,” and “my name is Sarah, and I want to be a cheerleader and cure cancer.” I actually did become a cheerleader in high school. The very first season of The Real World on MTV aired in 1992, when I was a senior in high school. It was neat to watch people like Julie, who was a fish out of water. Eventually, it just turned into morons who got drunk every night and multiple sex partners day after day, night after night. I think I quit watching it after San Francisco and it got so predictable; get wasted, have an orgy, get wasted, have an orgy, etc. Oh, and I went to high school with the girl who came to be known as “the drunk girl in Hawaii.” How SHE got into Rutgers, I’ll never know.
I had such a crush on her back when this show aired. She was so pretty and had a cool personality in the show. Her, Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island, and Athena from Battlestar Galactica 1978, were my angels.
I cannot believe that this guy put so much pressure on poor mallory to "do it" I am so glad that she changed her mind and decided not to go through with it and decided to wait. He was not the right guy for her.
what I like about Justine Bateman now is that she is still beautiful, but it's not the fake Hollywood beautiful with tens of thousands in surgery. She let nature take its course and made her who she is now. She recently gave interviews talking about this and it's pretty powerful. Good for her. How many young women today, when confronted with that scenario, would have the dignity and self-esteem to know what is right for them, and NOT cave under pressure to conform?
My issue with Family Ties, they used the laugh track on moments that werent meant to be funny. I guess because in the end they wanted to keep it family friendly show.. but between this segment, Uncle Arthur molesting her, and her asking Alex for advice.. they could have done it without the laugh track
That was the practice with most shows at the time, they thought that it would ease any tension and awkwardness the audience had about watching episodes about very serious topics.
In real life Mallory was about 20 years old here. She started the show when she was 17. So she has already been mounted a few or more times. Spread your wings and let him inside.
I just love how tv shows make the guys seem like jerks when it comes to sex. Let's b honest, young girls have sex with their bf to feel grown up/ sophisticated...theycare trying yo show off for other girls. Rarely is the guy such a dweeb!.
I was maybe 11 or 12 when this episode aired and I had the biggest crush on Malory. This guy's character was a bit prickish but I understood his frustration. Should of whipped it out and let her decide.
The amount of Blue Pill VS Red Pill in this scene is actually quite baffling. Mallory represents the Blue Pill before sex - she wants everything to FEEL just right, from beginning, middle to end. If not, then in with the complications. Rick represents the Red Pill before sex - he wants it right then and there, complications be DAMNED. Any signs? Well...he may as well have just wasted his time, so now he's questioning whether to pump her OR dump her. I don't support either one of those sides, because they both have a common problem: SEXUAL CONTROL. She wants to control the sex the way it feels right for her, he wants TOTAL control of the sex the way he sees fit. That spells: horrible relationship dynamic. That's why they both felt they needed to cease the sex altogether. At least, they had some sort of common sense. When she asked him, "are we going to see each other again"? And he said, "I don't know", she and I knew EXACTLY what he really meant. So she walked. Now everybody keeps calling HIM the asshole, never taking into account that they were actually BOTH assholes about the same sex act, because someone or the other wanted to control it their way or the highway.
Buying an expensive dinner doesn't mean you get the precious heart and body of a woman. Buying dinner is just being a gentleman. We don't owe you something that high in value for some carbohydrates.
@Danny Timms No, she does not "overvalue" herself; she knows her value, which is why she has her standards set for her human relationships, as most people should. If some other woman wants to "put out" for carbs, then that is her standard, and she does us other women a favor by accepting such "men" in the first place. Glad Mallory eventually sees through his bs and does not end up with him.
He's not a jerk! She should've gave it up IMMEDIATELY like they REALLY did in the 80's. Loved the 80's, biggest problem back then was asking the girls to leave so you can get some sleep before work.
