Hey all - I'm now offering genealogy research and software services - see what's on offer here today - it's my Google Doc to keep things simple! docs.google.com/document/d/1oNtOL4Dw0GOpucWmzVdA2HwqdBCTDf6JjKOHHnVf3IE/edit?usp=sharing

I currently have built Family Trees on both Ancestry, and MyHeritage. My question is: Does both Wiki and FamilySearch have a connection process to merge with the other sites. And which site gives the user more options to craft a particular tree. And which of the two -Wiki and FamilySearch, have a more accurate DNA tester?

Hey there! Good question. I have seen the DNA option on WikiTree but not explored it - a quick look suggests that it simply applies a badge so other relations can see if you've taken a DNA test. Will have to update you and do another video on some of this. Answers to other questions below: *Use with Other Sites* WikiTree: Yes, you can export a GEDCOM file, as per this forum post "Go to Download GEDCOM and click the button. The file will be created during the night so you should receive a message in the morning that the file is ready to be downloaded" from www.wikitree.com/g2g/1475/how-to-export-a-gedcom-file-from-wikitree Family Search: "Currently, a GEDCOM file cannot be exported directly from FamilySearch Family Tree. However, you can use partner programs of FamilySearch to get the data from FamilySearch Family Tree, and then create a GEDCOM file in those programs." from here www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/GEDCOM *DNA* Family Search does not appear to offer this as a connected service in any way. In terms of options within your tree, do you have any specifics in mind? I would say Family Search has the most options but it is prone to change - as you can see in my latest video on that topic here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SLAt2dCheYM.html&ab_channel=FamilyCurious

@@familycurious3813 Thank you for the response. I have a question about constructing Family Trees. What site and/or software programs give the user an option to self-construct a charts. Most sites seem to have the standard Pedigree, Family, Fan charts. But which programs, sites give more Tree construction options?

I'm finding Wiki Tree to be the best. They have the idea to create one record per person and link everyone into a humanity family tree, so you can really benefit from other people's research once you find a connection. And unlike most sites, you don't have to subscribe to do so.

I did find it good but general user experience felt a little clunky (fair enough with a completely free site!). Maybe I need to revisit a bit more. Thanks for the nudge.

I must admit seeing the rubbish some have recorded for my family members is so frustrating as I am careful to verify all my details so to put it on Family Search and people mess it up would drive me mad. i do make my info public unless the people are living as I want accurate information copied. Maybe I should venture there for clues I'm missing as I do search family Trees online to pickup information I don't know and that I verify for myself.

Yes, it is frustrating - it makes me wonder how much incorrect information is out there and shared. I always try to verify with records first, but it is so tempting on Ancestry and sites like that, too, that are constantly suggesting these things. Best of luck with it!

What is the best free website to build a family tree from scratch (not uploading a GEDCOM) where the branches do not minimumize/collapse, allowing you to view the entire tree as you scroll?
@familycurious3813
@familycurious3813 3 года назад
Wiki Tree is the only option I know of but its family tree view isn't particularly aesthetically pleasing at present. Otherwise, all the other family tree sites collapse and do not offer a single screen view of the entire tree, including Ancestry (which has its own free version). Let us know how you get on!

Unless you have a small tree, the only way to see the whole tree is to get it printed by a chart making company (or print at home and tape it together). Alternatively you can use family tree maker to create a larger chart and print it at kinkos

@@AncestryNerd printing is not necessary.

It's quite difficult for me to find a genealogy record research website as I am from Bharat and therefore have NO records in the websites usually mentioned.

That sounds hard - I wish I could suggest something but I am focused on the UK. Hope you can find something one day soon!

@@familycurious3813 I understand 😄. I did end up getting an ancestry subscription but that didn't give any results. I've come to the conclusion since then that my family's record were probably destroyed during partition or earlier. Good day :)

Isn't it a huge security risk to upload so much personal information online?!

If you use those as passwords etc then yes, it could lead in to possible social engineering, but I suppose that's a choice. Which particular aspects concern you the most about it, out of interest?

This computer research is a great tool. I have also discovered that your home printer is too - as well as taking screen shots. I print each part of my research to review later. What I can't print, I copy links and create a WORD file and print that. I also screenshot pages and save to WORD and to two thumb drives. This way I don't panic when an online page becomes missing. Yes, it's a lot of work, but the research done is precious and the confidence gained is priceless. I expect to have great grandkids some day whom one day may rely on these records long after my passing. It's part of their inheritance to know who they are and where they came from. That is a responsibility I take seriously, so the effort is worth it. . Good luck to you and all who care enough to document their family.
@familycurious3813

I agree, Wanda, and think your point about it being a responsibility is crucial too. I suppose family heirlooms will include hard disks in the near, future too! All the best with the research.
