00:00 Hollywood’s Menswear History Introduction
Popular menswear ensembles are often associated with Hollywood style icons. And despite the fact that fashion comes and goes, some styles remain as legacies (for instance, James Dean’s Harrington jacket and jeans combo). So, how did men’s style and style icons change over time, what influence did movie celebrities have on classic menswear, and is that influence as strong as it used to be?
History of Famous & Influential Menswear
00:47 18th Century Fashion - Ruled by Aristocrats
04:04 Beau Brummell Entered High Society
05:50 Celebrities Become Tastemakers - Suits
07:18 Actors Owned Their Clothing
11:40 Casual Styles
12:25 The Style of Men Today
•• More Entertainers, More Style Inspiration
Hollywood is certainly part of the mainstream and pumps out a lot more films and movies than they used to. On top of that, you have places like Amazon and Netflix that also produce a lot of stuff.
•• Modern Hollywood Has Various Menswear Styles
If you look at famous men today in the film industry who are hailed for their style, one of the first names that come up is George Clooney. Frankly, in my mind, he wears more of a uniform and he doesn’t have a very interesting personal style.
17:10 Then vs. Now: What's Changed?
•• Actors Were More Conservative with Their Looks
At first glance, it may seem that actors back then were just themselves versus today it’s all just about marketing. But, if you take a closer, look you realize that, even in old Hollywood, they had their ways to protect the reputation of actors.
•• Men Now Have More Freedom to Choose Clothing
Men are much freer to choose whatever they want when it comes to clothing. Back then, you could wear a suit, maybe a slightly different color, your tie could maybe be different. But, today, you can truly wear whatever you feel comfortable with and express yourself through your clothes.
So, while you can’t rely on Hollywood giving you great examples of classic style, you can bet we always will.

I have to say one of the best feelings I’ve experienced was in late highschool starting to dress in a certain way that was different from the modern styles of the time that I had been dressing in, only to watch everyone around me adopt those styles. Now I know I wasn’t the reason but it still feels good to be ahead of the curve at least once.

If classic menswear gets a big resurgence instead of being a niche field (it’s not bad though, the less people, the better) but it’s not a bad thing for it to be also more widespread than it is right now. Let’s get this 1 Million ASAP. 🎩

The short segment on Cary Grant is actually very telling. On the one hand, it has to be said that "the beautiful people," of whom Grant was undeniably one, can generally get away with anything they want to, including dressing down. The person often makes the style, rather than vice versa. But on the other hand, that very fact means they often will do precisely that, because they don't *need* to be flamboyant, provocative, or outrageous to attract attention because it'll happen anyway. As a consequence, many of them (especially women, I've observed) will take it down a notch precisely because there's a class of attention they don't want. Grant clearly didn't feel he benefitted from being perceived as a dandy or a fashion plate, so he didn't bother. He simply aimed to look respectable enough, and let his looks and charm speak for him.

Great job on the video. I’m wondering if 60 or 70 years from now George Clooney will be looked as a style icon for the same reason that Cary Grant is today. I love how you were well balanced of your critique of Hollywood today and not simply dismissing them because the style is not classic. One of my favorite comments was from Hugo Jacomet that stylish clothes changes for men slower then women’s clothing but it does still change ( even Cary Grant changed his style over the years). Nice outfit 👍👌 by the way.

There’s a jazz musician named Pokey LaFarge (real name Andrew Heissler) who is a fabulous dresser. I once saw him in a cafe in Saint Louis and he had the most immaculate white linen suit on, and I couldn’t stop smiling at him and staring, I had to deliberately look away. He looked like he stepped out of a vintage photograph. Suit was perfectly cut and just baggy enough, and really emphasized how tall and lanky he is.

As an 14 years old person before two years I started be interested in the content of this chanel. First thing I could do was to learn the basics around behaviour. This was free and now... Now I want to change my wardrobe as the problem is I don't have a lot of money. Not only that, but when you chase trends and live on the cutting edge of style, your look becomes dated very quickly. My personal style motto is to dress in such a way that someone looking at a picture of me 20 years from now will not be able to tell from my clothes that the picture is two decades old. That's why Cary Grant is such a timeless icon of style.

@Real Man It's just that, nowadays not many jobs require dressing "up" so I can't help but not like people who look down on more casual wear. My father worked in construction and as a plumber his whole life, he grew up on a mountain farm in the alps. He, and others, doesn't need some priviledged upper middle class snob to tell him, that jeans and rubber soles are too casual. Thats all he ever needed.

That’s interesting. I did not know “Schneider” meant tailor in German. A lot of common German surnames are derived from occupations. For instance: Fleischman = butcher, Zimmerman = carpenter. A German gentleman I once knew told me Arnold Schwarzenegger translates to Arnold “Blackfield.” Schwartz means black, egger means field. Then there was the Secretary of the Treasury in the 1930’s, Henry Morgenthau or Henry “Morning dew.” Morgen = morning, thau = dew.

While they’re outliers, I do think there are still some very stylish and formal celebrities today in their average lives. Paul F. For a more obscure example, Rufus Hound is a British comedic actor who also certainly knows his way around a formal wardrobe even if it’s on the flashier side.

Then 1 vs now 0, no competition. Nothing more handsome than a man dressed appropriately with etiquette.

It's interesting that you mention Benedict Cumberbatch. I don't know anyone who thinks of him in terms of having great style. One can make the argument that Clooney is over-rated and boring style-wise, but they are still noticing his sense of style. I know more people who comment on Cumberbatch's sense of humor and personality than his style. If I had to point to an American celebrity who has a classic or classic-inspired style that leaves a great impression, it would be director and producer Paul Feig. And no one would dare accuse him of being boring. Feig's style seems more noteworthy to me than Cumberbatch's, but then again, I don't have a pro-British bias.

Glad u spoke about the history of style including what was allowed to wear years ago as opposed today even mentioning more recent periods such as slavery and Venice's anti semitism

it hard to dress up conformability when stores treat sports jacket they suit jackets. they should say if they are summer jacket or winter sports jacket on the tag. also sport jacket some be made where it can be machine washed because they get more wear than suit.

Not sure there is something such as "timeless style". A 1920s suit is very different from a 1940s suit and so on. Why even bother trying to look timeless when you can just look good? To me that means a 1930/40s silhouette with wide and high trousers and spearpoint collars. It might means something else to others. To some I would look dated even if I wore contemporary tailoring.

Clothes not only protect from the elements, but they protect modesty and dignity, something our society has forgotten. We can learn from our ancestors.
