My parents are buried there. It's a very special place for me personally, but also as a veteran myself it reminds me of fellow brothers and sister in arms who have served. I never knew so many celebrities were resting with my parents. Thank you!
TY for your service..and also both of your parents. My daddy was in the Navy in WWII, my grandfather, was in the Army during WWII, and it goes all the way back to the Mounted Infantry with my great-great grandfather, around the time of Gen. Custer. His discharge was written on buckskin!! Also my mothers side. All my Uncles (6) were in WWII. I come from a very long line of Veterans. 🇺🇸🌎🌹♥️
This is so awesome! As a San Diego native i've been here many times and it is so beautiful. My grandfather rests on the west side over looking the pacific ocean, thank you for shining light on this wonderful national cemetery.
How serene the Veterans' Cemetery is. I love the uniformity of the size of headstones and the sight of all of those evenly spaced rows flowing down the hillside is very moving.
Thanks Steve. Another great video. As a veteran of the U. S. Army I am always proud of the excellent job that the V. A. does taking care of their cemeteries. What a view! Very nice.
The military cemeteries are always spectacular. The precision of the rows of headstones flowing over the ground is breathtaking and truly a beautiful sight. This was a very special visit Steve. Thank you.
I will be buried at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Pa., military cemeteries are so beautiful. It’s nice that so many actors are being remember of their military service in death. It’s a part of their personal lives we don’t get to hear about or even know about. This is a wonderful video. Thank you so much for all you do.
It wonderful how Military Cemetery’s are so Beautiful I think it’s partly how it’s layer out But mostly the wonderful People that are Buried here they fought for theirCountry and Some Gave All God Bless them And May They All Rest In Peace. Steve you do such a great job with these vlogs you not only give us information about the people but you do it respectfully no cussing no swearing thankyou so much
I enjoyed watching Sky King as a kid. You always take me down Memory Lane ...thank you Steve for the tour of this beautiful cemetery! God bless all veterans!
That looks like a terrific cemetery for the veterans to be laid to rest there out in California, the view looks dashing, with the harbor and the ocean.
I still think you should receive a doctorate in cemetery research. Indeed, this might be the most beautiful location for a cemetery. Thank you for your tremendous energy to research and present the peoples' backgrounds and accomplishments.
My mom and Dad’s marker is right next to the corner looking down the base ball parks I miss them very very much. I live in San Diego Ca. I think it’s all filled up the place. One of the best and peaceful places to be put to rest. Thanks again for your blogs 🙏 God bless you all.
Wonderful presentation. The cemetery was so beautiful. The stories and the history were awesome too. A very fitting tribute both to our veterans and those who chose in life to entertain us. Thanks Steve!
My parents were cremated, and rest in the columbarium on the west side of the cemetery. The beauty of their resting place gives me a great deal of comfort. I never thought about the fact that my dad, who was also stationed at Pearl Harbor, can now gaze across the Pacific towards Hawaii. Thank you for this.
Hi Steve you always take us to such beautiful cemeteries, when I have a chance I will go this cemetery, what awesome views and looks soo peaceful. Great job Steve 👏🏼😊 as always I enjoy your vlogs VERY much 😊
Thank You so much for this beautiful video. There were so many famous movie, television and literary artists that served back in the day. Also, astronauts and sports celebrities.. You don’t see that anymore. Each person that served gave their lives for their Country, even those that came home, because they became the ones that kept our way of life going.
it took three trips over two years to complete and was a special one for me. glad you liked it, norma. oh, and by the way, jim doesn't even watch my channel or have any interest in cemeteries :-)
The views from this cemetery are spectacular. I love the vista view of the helicopter and the veterans white markers against the blue water Thanks for sharing Steve!
My husband & I visited his older sister in Santee (a suburb of San Diego) Christmas 2018. She took us to this cemetery one day while visting. Her husband is a navy veteran & both plan to be buried there. So beautiful.
I do love that view that cemetery has. I was in San Diego very briefly 20 something years ago but I nknh did not visit this one. It is on my radar though as there are several other people there that are interesting to tell about. Thanks for taking us on a tour!
yes, i didn't even find everyone. there are at least a half dozen others of interest there. i'll probably go back again in the future to see if i can find them. if you ever visit, let me know and i'll try to meet you there and we can see if we can find them together. thanks, rhetty!
This cemetery is truly beautiful, Steve - thank you for this one in particular. On Gloria Winters, her SKY KING co-star, KIrby Grant, had a summer home in a neighboring county of my own. As I recall, he died in an auto accident enroute to Florida to watch a space shuttle launch. We have a relatively-large veteran's cemetery about a hundred miles east of my county. My state has a large veteran's population; most of the larger grounds have an Honor Section for them, of course. My father served in the So.Pacific from 1941 to 1943 (he was actually in from 1940 onward), until being discharged due to injuries received when the troop transport truck he was on was taken out. Douglas Croft's story is very sad; many veterans who have seen combat often suffer alcoholism, and related problems, such as PTSD, and other troubles. As a long-time "space exploration nut," I'm pleased Wally Schirra has a memorial there. How about covering more astronaut graves sometime (if you haven't already?) I had thought that actor Jason Robards (Jnr.) had been at Pearl Harbour during the Japanese attack, but this is said to be in-error; his ship, the Northhampton, was about 100 miles away on December 7, 1941. The ship was later sunk; Robards stayed in the water for two days. A later vessel he was serving aboard was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze aircraft, and was nearly sunk, but survived. Robards was decorated several times until being discharged in 1946. According to his Find a Grave page, he is interred at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield, Connecticut. Maybe someone can send you a photo of his resting place.
excellent video Steve. I like the entertaining and informative format you use. I don't watch grave videos as a rule ( they are boring) but you are the exception. the background info you give is so interesting that I am glued to your every word. I am a disabled combat veteran and I just want to say thank you, and express my heartfelt appreciation for all the hard work you put into your channel. semper fi my friend....looking forward to your next adventure.
My Great grandfather (my grandmother's father served in WW2) my Grandfather's dad served in Pearl Harbor, unfortunately he lost his life over there.my grandfather served in the Korean war along with my Uncle Carl.
thanks for sharing their memory with us, michelle. your connection to pearl harbor is especially moving. sometimes we forget that these are real people who often gave their lives during their service.
Beautiful!! I know I have said this before, my Husband and I will be cremated and laid to rest at the Veterans cemetery in Jacksonville, FL. Many of the people who served in WWII were drafted, but they would say, they received their greetings into the Army or whatever branch. That might be how so many child actors did serve. The helicopter was The Navy!!
The Searchers, one of the best western movies ever made! What an amazing Cemetery ! The views are stunning! Also how well kept and the headstones perfectly row on row! Personally, i prefer the cremation option, I hate the thought of my corpse lying in a box rotting away over the decades! Ashes to Ashes...Dust to Dust...Thanks Steve!
Hello Steve , thank you for showing all of us Fort Rosecrans . Back in the day when I was aboard the USS CHICAGO CG 11, our home port NAVAL AIR STATION Coronado is what you see across the bay and that is were the helicopter was coming from. Also if you drive that main road all the way to the end there is the old light house that can be toured. Thanks for taking us with you today I enjoyed it.
i tried multiple times to visit the point loma lighthouse but the line of traffic was so long that i just turned around each time. one of these days i'll see it. thanks for sharing this with us, chris, and thanks for your service!
Thank You all for your service. Many of the Ashes of those who survived Pearl Harbor are placed at the bottom of the Memorial in Pearl Harbor. That is of course The USS Arizona. Thank you for sharing all you do too.
What a beautiful cemetery location! You are right about the million dollar views. As a kid, I never missed Sky King, Fury or My Friend Flicka. I still watch them on RU-vid from time to time. Those shows and many others had great messages for us kids. Thanks Steve.
Thank You Steve for always doing your vlogs with taste & respect ✊. I will be starting up my vlog in the spring. You’ve lost me with most of these today a bit before my time . The veterans families also give their time with their loved ones serving . My dad served in the U.S.N. During WWII. I also have 2 older brothers that served during the Vietnam era one Navy , one Army . ♥️☮️⚓️🚢
Steve I have a brother in law in AA veterans cemetery in Seville Ohio national cemeteries are so beautiful and look at how in line the head stones are in straight lines. May all of our veterans rest in peace and to all that serve and have served God bless them all. And thank you for there service.
Hi Steve :) I know, I don't have to say it "again" LOL but nonetheless, it was a super video. That Cemetery is absolutely stunning with those amazing views. Love it :) ~Karin~
Thank you for sharing when i lived there i went to visit there i don't know there were actors buried there thank you steve oh i have pictures when i went there stay safe.
Again... nicely done Steve... thanks. I got chills seeing my hero Wally Shirra and also knowing that Wesley Hughes is pointing toward Pearl Harbor. AND you're right... no better view anywhere from a cemetery that I can remember.
Up above this cemetery is an old light house and a world war 2 bunker in the cliff over looking the ocean. I used to love to go there when I lived in California. Thanks for the memory Steve.
Got the sad news that your wonderful site will change formats soon. Please consider keeping your gravesite videos accessible on your new site! I'm sure that they will remain popular. I think that the principal reason you're getting few subscribers is that you now have a great many more competitors "in the field" that you did even two years ago. Your work has been uniformly terrific and contains much of historical and educational interest. Good luck in going in your new direction--I'll be right there with you.
I agree beautiful views and what a beautiful cemetery. Thank you for the backstories about all these people, all of this is so interesting. Big thank you so much :)
The flashlight epitaph refers to the fact that the deceased is in a very dark sealed niche without a source of light. So he desires a flashlight. The views there are spectacular. I know of a couple of cemeteries where there are great views from small portions of the cemetery. In Greenwood, in Brooklyn, the highest point gives great views of NY Harbor and the lower Manhattan skyline. At Calvary in Queens NY, there are great views of the mid town Manhattan sky line. But Calvary is a mixed bag. At the opposite side, where Dom De Luise is, some graves are under a highway overpass.
that's kind of what i was thinking too, about the flashlight :-) good to know about brooklyn and queens. i've never been to either, but hope to visit in the not too distant future. thanks, raymond!
Thanks for the great tour Steve. Ever been to the cemetery at Père Lachaise In Paris, France? That is a large place. Actors, actresses, poets, authors, Myriad of persons.👋😀🕊
yes, i was there in 1990 and visited jim morrison's grave and many others. unfortunately, this was before youtube and cell phones, so i only have a couple of pics which i plan to share at some point. have you been there? it's one of my favorite cemeteries. thanks lora!
I remember Sky King and The Songbird. Such good memories, Steve. I find it interesting that biking isn't allowed, but there are bike lanes on both sides of the roadway.
Good morning, Steve. I will be buried in the Killeen (Fort Hood) military cemetery. With my husband and children. My hubby served for 23 and continues to serve as a contractor. My 20 year old son is already there. He was murdered in Austin Texas on Jan 9th 2009. .He is also on Find a grave. As Joseph Russo. As always, I love your well done videos
hi luanne, i'm so sorry to hear about the tragic loss of your son. i searched his name in that cemetery on findagrave.com but could not find him. i did read an online newspaper article about his shooting, though. how awful. thank you for sharing the memory of joseph with us and thank you for your family's service!
Fort Rosecrans ran out of space in 2014. When visiting San Diego in October of 2013 I learned that Ft. Rosecrans was close to running out of space. That trip turned out to be fortuitous, since my Mom had passed a few years earlier, I found out as the wife of the veteran, she could be interned at that time, effectively "saving" a spot for Dad. 30 days later I was on my way back to SD with Mom's ashes. Dad passed this past October, and now has joined Mom in a niche over looking San Diego Bay where he can watch the Navy ships come and go.
My parents are buried at the National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC. It was created in 1863 and is a beautiful cemetery. The soldiers that were the subject of the movie "Glory" are buried there. Beaufort is a beautiful town as well, since it was settled back in Colonial times. It is a coastal town and Hilton Head is not all that far away. Charleston is not all that far away, and there are some beautiful cemeteries there as well.
Thanks for sharing that with us Janice. I’m really hoping to get back that way in the next year or two. If I have time I will definitely try to visit the town and cemetery. Thanks for the heads up 👍
I’m attending a funeral at Ft. Rosencrans tomorrow morning. I’ve lived in San Diego my whole life and I’ve never been and the pictures are beautiful. It’s going to be chilly with possible rain.
Steve, Thanks for another great video. My uncle a career Marine died in 2009 near San Diego. My cousins tried to get him into Ft. Rosencrans but officials there said it would be a six month wait. Ironically they got him into Arlington National Cemetery in three weeks. While not an entertainer, ADM Stephen George Morrison is buried at Gt. Rosencrans. He was the father of Jim Morrison of The Doors.
morrison's find a grave page says the service was there, but that his ashes were scattered at sea. i had no idea about this or i would have mentioned him. thanks for sharing this, jeff, and for sharing the memory of your uncle, as well. arlington is even better.
Wonderfull as always not been on for a while as I lost my son just before xmas so not to good but I be back soon to watch you great video soon 😥😥😥😥🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹😇😇😇
Hi, My father is interned at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery at Santa Nella. There is a beautiful view atop of the look out. It over looks a reservation. It's a very beautiful place.
thanks joe! i do sell them in my teespring shop :-) i couldn't find any i liked so i decided to make some for myself and for anyone else who wanted them. teespring.com/stores/graveyard-gifts
Steve - a fascinating tour as usual. A stunningly beautiful cemetery and so well organized! My dad was a veteran of World War II in the Pacific arena so hearing about the Pearl Harbor survivor really interested me. Blessings -Judith
Thank you for what you said Steve. No one has ever thanked me for my dad's service before. He was 46 when I was born and never talked to me about his experience. He's been gone 38 years and no one has ever said that to me. It meant a lot. Thank you for your kindness, Steve. Blessings - Judith
