Street foods are in Hanoi They don’t look like in the south of Vietnam. Don’t like black breads.

That's not the real Vietnamese bánh mì. The real and traditional bánh mì has been destroyed for the last 2 decades or more, first by the Vietnamese living abroad, then with the complicity of the local Vietnamese. Want to know the truth, just ask any elderly Vietnamese anywhere in the world how the real Vietnamese bánh mì (pork roll) looked like and tasted in the old time. What you call bánh mì today is no where near the deliciousness of the real ones.

Then please tell us what is in a "real" banh mi.

@@MrGrim504 First, you could smell the wonderful aroma of the "rolls" themselves everytime you walk passed a "bánh mì thịt" stall and once you approach the stall, the beautiful aroma of the pork is hard for someone not to have a bite. There would not be any lettuce, ton of carrots, onion, shallots and all other meat product like "chả" in there. Only pork, mayonaise, a slice of cucumber, few strings of carrot (optional) and chilli. The last thing the sellers would add to the "bánh mì" is Maggi soy sauce and nothing else. In the early 70s, another variation of "bánh mì thịt" came out and became very popular for few years which was "bánh mì Gà" or chicken roll. The original version was from Nguyễn Ngọ, a shop on Trần Hưng Đạo street. Everybody loved them. It was nothing like the s**t "bánh mì gà" of today. Now why have the traditional "bánh mì thịt" (Pork roll) and "bánh mì gà" (Chicken roll) disappeared? If you've lived in the old years, experienced what were in Vietname then travelled and lived overseas for the last 40 years, then you'd understand why because you have witnessed the change and understand why. The Vietnamese rolls in other countries have changed from "quality" to "quantity" for at least the last 30 years. Like in Sydney, back in the early 80s, we could still buy a roll of traditional "bánh mì thịt" in Cabramatta, but then they dissapeared by the 90's and beyond and replaced with the current hybrid version that tastes nothing like a real "bánh mì thịt". Most reviews from YT or social media are made by the younger generations (Vietnamese and foreigners) who has no knowledge about our traditional foods and how they shoud taste and look like. Some are based on the local people of younger generations who also have no clues. What I saw from my last trip back home in 2023 was several traditional dished have been badly damaged, deformed and even totally destroyed like "bánh mì". Is it accidently or "Cultural genocide"? It depends how much you understand this world.
