Took on AEE's Fan Dance on 7th January 2023. What a brutal, but beautiful test in the stunning surrounds of the Brecon Beacons.
The 14.1 mile (1,200m climbing) course takes you up and over Pen y Fan, then back again. It is a test march that the British SAS/SBS (et al SF) use as part of their notorious "Hills" phase of selection.
It was hard!! But from that pain and show of grit comes great reward...and a few decent stories too.
I thoroughly recommend anyone takes the challenge on if you get the chance - it is a sure fire way of building your resilience and showing just what you are made and capable of.
My training did not go well (skinned both heels, broke a toe etc), but I still showed up, still gave it a go and, in those most awful of conditions (torrential rain, 50mph winds, waterlogged paths and raging stream crossing) proved to myself what I am capable of....what any of us are capable of if we put our minds to achieving something.
Go well.

I was in my fifties when I did my first FD. My older son did it with me but he left me well behind. He completed it about 40 minutes before I did. That made me determined to improve my time and over the next year or so it became easier (but never easy) and I was eventually able to match his time. I came to love endurance mountain running but it all came to a screeching halt 10 years ago when I was hit by a car while crossing a road in my home village. Wrecked my right knee, dislocated my left shoulder and fractured my left clavicle. Now, I don't think I could make it from Storey Arms to the top of Pen Y Fan even at a gentle walking pace. I miss my trail running every damned day.😢

In the past I have done the FD several times in well under 4 hours each time. Though I have to say I had been into endurance hill running for years and I was very fit. Living only 20 miles away, on average I spent two weekends a month running the BBNP mountain trails for well over a decade and I always travelled light carrying only water, sandwiches, a small first aid pack and 2 mobile phones, each with a different service provider. I would also run 10 miles three times a week on the countryside trails around the village where I live. Added to that, I started each FD completely fresh and rested. I don't think I could ever have "qualified" for SAS training if I had been one of those squaddies who had been through the demanding beat up they have to endure in the days before the FD and I have nothing but admiration for those lads who attempt that fitness test, whether they pass or fail.

Lloyd I did the FD in July 22 just after I’d turned 61. The weather was atrocious, it was raining and windy . I’ve got a damaged right knee which didn’t start to play up until I’d got over Jacobs ladder on the way back . Your right it taught me a lot about myself . Enjoyed your video .

That's a really good time! I did the summer one just gone in 4.34 and g=felt could have gone quicker as we were guilty a bit of strolling off the first Pen y Fan summit and then stopped too long at half way, not least because I needed to treat a blister. Anyway qq: i'm doing the winter event this year and your time would be a great target... did you fast hike all the way or did you run any of it? cheers

@lloydrunningfree Год назад
Did an ultra over 3 peaks (50miles total) - but no weight. I'd rather do the 3 peaks with no weight (24 miles), over the Fan with 40lbs (14 miles). If both clean fatigue, then I'd do the Fan as it's far shorter. Both tough challenges tho 💪💪

Brilliant effort, well done. Back in Summer 90/ Winter 91 I did the 21 SAS version...which is actually longer....you go over the Fan three times. Failed the summer , passed the winter...alot easier for me. The Summer one in 90 was really hot.

@@lloydrunningfree obviously we had longer to do it. But I remember going up the Fan for the last time. The RSM came out of the mist and told me get a move on. I jogged all the way down to Storey Arms...made it...just. I think it was 6 hours. Four hours later we then had to do a night march, about 15k. If you are a reader have a look at 'The Quiet Soldier' by Adam Ballinger...its his journey through 21 Selection at about the same time as me. I'm 58 now, with 2 new knees...I don't think i would make it lol

@HF Army I used a 60litre bergen, even as a masters entry it was a tight squeeze to fit mandatory gear to meet the 25lbs minimum weight before water etc, in summer they say 5 litres, it's bulky, would recommend a 70 litre, single compartment pack

Top effort man 👏. I'm doing the fan in January and I'm currently running 8-10 miles twice a week and tabbing once a week. How much of the route did you run/shuffle?
@lloydrunningfree
@lloydrunningfree 11 месяцев назад
No more than 20% I would say. Didn't train hills enough and descent off Jacobs ruined me. Thankfully, my walking pace is pretty decent. Good luck - it is one heck of an experience!!!
@richarddorries7464
@richarddorries7464 11 месяцев назад
@@lloydrunningfree Cheers man. I'm been training mainly hills and the odd bits of shuffling on flats and downhill sections. Trouble is, the surface on the Fan looks way more uneven to what I'm currently training on so I'm not sure what to expect.
@lloydrunningfree
@lloydrunningfree 11 месяцев назад
@@richarddorries7464 it is uneven, and Jacobs is big steps, so harder to train for. Just make sure you do plenty of weighted hill reps - walk up, then run down. That will build up the muscles for the Fan's brutality.
@richarddorries7464
@richarddorries7464 11 месяцев назад
@@lloydrunningfree I've done Jacob's before, did the Horseshoe walk along the four peaks earlier in the year, albeit only carrying a few kilos. I've been training on hills in Snowdonia so I'm hoping I should be as prepared as I can be. I spoke to a guy the other day from central London who's mainly training on a treadmill and felt a bit sorry for him. Quite lucky really living so close to some great spots.
@lloydrunningfree
@lloydrunningfree 11 месяцев назад
@richarddorries7464 yeah, makes a big difference. I can run 10 miles with 35lbs on flat in 90mins, but no hills near me, so as soon as I hit the Fan my leg strength was found out. You are definitely doing the right thing concentrating on elevation in Snowdonia
