There is an opportunity to have a walkies through this remote Royal Burgh of Wick.
This small rural town on the NC500 route is full of surprises and history.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before Wick was deemed a royal burgh, it has been linked back to the Vikings. When Christianity reached this town in the 8th century and Saint Fergus (hence the name of one of the churches and the road). Then a couple of centuries later in the 12-13th century, this county was governed by the Norwegians until around 1214 when the King of Scotland was put in charge.
The key point in Wicks' history was around late 1390s- early 1400s when King Robert III permitted Neill Sutherland with the burgh of barony (sounds fancy for a little fishing town).
Then after a couple of battles amidst various Scottish clans, imprisonments for treason (whoops) and was given royal burgh status around 1589.
Following another jump in history (drownings in Wick river or murder so not sure there).
During the 19th century, this little northerly town became infamous for herring fishing, creation of a bridge (to take the pressure off a footbridge of planks). It was kindly thought to connect the Far North (beyond Tain) towards Inverness (did the issues in Wick start here).
Then around 1933 the Wick airport began flights to Inverness and Kirkwall (Orkney).
Although in both wars, Wick was affected especially because of the bustling harbour. Sadly, there were multiple bombings including Bank Row (previous video) that resulted in 8 children with 15 adults being killed in the daytime.
There is more to Wick like other regions of this town but this is a brief summary for this initial video.
Thank you for watching! :) Please like, comment and subscribe to my channel.

You're right Paul, there is usually a couple of people about in every type of weather which can help in the pouring rain to feel bad for the other soaked people!! Oh dear that it isn't very good (hoping that you are better now!) It is a good hospital for what it can do! :)

I enjoy having a wonder around Wick, love the history of the place, and meeting people to chat to in the street. You're right John it is a very nice place, some bad spots, and a great community spirit! I was just showing people who don't know the area that it is a lovely looking area on the surface and like other places needs attention (the community have weeded and tidied parts of the area since recording this set of videos). Both Wick and Thurso have struggled for some time, but the communities are pulling together to improve it when the council doesn't have the resources that it needs from the governments alike much of the UK!

@paulpatrick6371 What a pity that this short film did not show anything desirable in this small town. Please see my comments below. Another RU-vidr, Steve Marsh, has done a very good video about Wick which I can recommend.

Thank you for watching my video, Janette. I have also watched the video from Steve Marsh, and it is good. My video was to show people how Wick is and walk through parts of it that people see. Please see my other videos of Wick that show good parts of Wick and the area near it. 😊

@@captured.by.carenza Thank you for your reply, Carenza. I am sorry if I offended you, and I can now understand what you were trying to do, but I thought that it looked a bit uninviting for anyone who may be planning a holiday in the area. There are some very interesting parts of Wick and I'll have to look at your other videos.

Hi Paul, thank you for watching my video of Wick. It is a lovely place to visit and like you said nearly no litter on the ground. Many of the buildings, especially on the high street, do need attention, shops need to be affordable to rent but like most places it is managing. The town itself has quite a lot of history and can be very atmospheric in all weathers. There have been plans drawn up to help Wick to be more visitor friendly but will have to wait and see! 🙂

Sorry you feel this way, Paul. I agree that sadly this film did not give a very good impression of this small town. There is more to Wick than was shown in this short film. See my comment above.

Please read my comment above as sadly this very short film, showing an unbelievably deserted town did not do it justice.

@@johnlad1481 I live here! This wee film showed Wick in a very poor light, must have been filmed on a Sunday night in November, it looked so grim, dirty street signs, and why go poking about that ruined building near the St Fergus Church? No wonder folk say they will take it off their bucket list. I have seen much better films of Wick - Steve Marsh did a great one.
