"This tea is nothing more than hot leaf juice!" "Uncle, that's what all tea is." "How could a member of my own family say something so horrible?" When So-Han was talking about bad tea, this was all I could think about XD
I really appreciate that the whiskey tribe channel isn't afraid to go off track into other interesting areas, it really brings out the element of exploration and appreciation that brings the tribe together.
4:10~ Taiping Houkui (太平猴魁, _Tài Píng Hóu Kuí_ , "Great Peace Monkey Chief") 8:28~ 2013 Attention Sheng Pu'er (心神古樹生茶, _Xīn Shén Gǔ Shù Shēng Chá_ , "State of Mind Ancient Tree Sheng Tea") 11:57~ Amanita (紅因, _Hóng Yīn_ , "Red Cause") 12:21~ Gamma Ray (丙種射線紅茶, _Bǐng Zhǒng Shè Xiàn Hóng Chá_ , "Gamma Ray Red Tea") 14:32~ Stone Axe Ancient Tree Yuan Sheng Tuo (石斧古樹原生沱熟茶, _Shí Fǔ Gǔ Shù Yuán Shēng Tuó Shú Chá_ , "Stone Axe Ancient Tree Original Life Tuo Ripe Tea")
I never believed in "tea drunk" but I had a day off at home with a shipment of several nice teas. I wanted to try it all and drank a *lot* of tea. Tea drunk isn't the same as alcohol drunk but it is disorienting.
This dude, who I always enjoy seeing on the channel, is way beyond a tea nerd (a compliment, not an insult). But listening to him share knowledge while seeing Dan in a Motorhead (RIP Lemmy) t-shirt was a jarring juxtaposition! And seeing Bri all dressed up and looking fancy, unlike Dan, was a refreshing change. Loved it, love the channel, and love never knowing what to expect when the Saturday videos come out!
As someone who is Chinese, it’s really cool to see how the culture has spread to the US and how it’s fused with western ideas to bring such a unique experience. Really cool episode during a dry week!
Props on the double tap on the table. Side question, Have they ever talked about adding tea leaves into the barrels? Just a random idea for the "will it distill?" series
I love how he speaks very knowledgeable about the culture, history, and science behind tea. Then proceeds to say "y'all"... Lol love it. Also, love the whole concept of expanding out a bit for the channel. Stay magnificent you bastards!
This is great! Because the tribe has gotten me into a search for the subtleties of whiskey, I stared drinking green tea at work and have also become interested in those subtleties and flavors.
I myself drink a lot of herbal and rooibos teas at home when I need to unwind. I often, by the end of my cup, do feel a sort of disoriented relaxation in and around my temples. It was nice to know I'm not crazy and may actually be experiencing a fun phenomenon haha
i have no idea who the guy with the motörhead shirt is , but one thing i know is that the dude prepared himself for this episode by watching probably this video with So-Han : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ixlOebAxhbI.html (compare to 4:48) and i respect that!
First the Modern Rogue, now the Whiskey Tribe collaborated with So-Han at West China Tea!! Edit: I actually had a conversation with So-Han and Erik(a staff member at West China Tea House) today(10/18/2022), and it was a real blast talking with them. 12:11~I've actually felt like that after drinking some Iron Arhat (鉄羅漢, _Tǐe Luó Hàn_ , a cultivar of Wuyi Oolong).
"It just tastes like it tastes." While I understand the point he is making about tea, this can definitely go for whiskey sometimes. Sometimes you gotta just tone it down, stop thinking as much and just enjoy it and the situation and company you're in while drinking.
Some of this channels best videos have nothing to do with whiskey. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t wait for them to ferment a rubber tire and drink it, but this was a super nice watch.
This is great. I actually got really into tea after visiting china and going to a tea shop where the person there very graciously shared in a tea ceremony. I even bought part of a kung fu tea set. I love the approach to tea as not just a flavor but a call to mindful presence the tea being just a vehicle really. That said the tea in that shop remains head and shoulders above anything I’ve had since. But I suppose now I know where I need to visit.
Been a long time whikey tribe and vault watcher, I just found teahouseghost randomly when trying to get into tea. I saw the thumb nail and realized that shop is in Austin TX I was way to excited to watch this video! Great collab!
Usually I have a nice pour of whiskey when watching this on Saturdays. Wasn't sure what I wanted until I saw where you went. But, as I am out of actual tea, I sipped on a juniper, mint, honey tisane from Tazo instead. Good call on some tea indeed! I love all the crossovers that happen. With Modern Rogue, West China Tea House, etc. It's just a great way to build communities together and expand one's own interests. I love it.
I love tea at least as much as I love whiskey. Very different loves, but things that I'm deeply interested in and what to really know about and understand. So it's super cool that one of my favorite whiskey channels is exploring tea. This is so cool.
Came in from the title thinking they were going to be doing something crazy and am pleasantly surprised to see they aren’t. Would love to go through a tasting like this.
So Han was the one to get me into tea when he did stuff with The Modern Rogue, so happy to see you guys doing it too! Love West China Tea, really great stuff.
OH THE DOUBLE FINGER TAP! I grew up drinking pu'erh/bo lei - and though there's a little bit of the mysticism of Chinese culture here with the large emphasis on qi and the holistic "feel" of tea, this is a pretty good intro to Chinese tea culture. The "mysticism" is definitely a part of the tea appreciation, but it's definitely not as large a focus as it may come across here. But I guess it is helpful to bring out those aspects to help newcomers to both tea and Chinese culture appreciate good tea (try explaining what yeet hei / hon leung is to someone without sounding like some mystical new-age quack). Oh, and tea drunk is really a thing (green-er teas can get overly leung [cooling] if drunk to excess) - which is why it's usually a good idea to not drink too much on an empty stomach - trust me from experience. Oh, and the tasting notes of pu'erh changes over the years and over different producers or whether it's raw or ripe tea. Generally 30-ish year old sheng pu'erh produce a more ginseng-like flavor which give way to interesting woody (sometimes sandalwood), mellow Chinese herb funk as they age further (which can be amazing if you're ready for adventure). Younger teas run the gamut of floral, spicy, honey sweet flavors, often with a strong wood-bark background. I'd strongly encourage whisky connoisseurs to give good kong fu tea a go if they can. It's completely eye-opening. Oh, and I love how newcomers think of old people when they drink pu'erh. Funnily enough, that's also how, traditionally, pu'erh's (especially aged raw or ripe pu'erh) been viewed.
Good quality tea can definitely influence your mood and sensations. Kind of similar to the way terpenes effect the Cannabis experience. Just much less intense but definitely pretty complex.
When I had my first time proper tea in China it almost felt like tripping on mushrooms lightly. My friend felt the same thing. Back then I thought that this is because it was 35 C (~100 F) outside and we were sipping hot liquid. Later I learned that this really is a thing. For this feeling of being high I would recommend steamed Japanese tea. Although I like the taste of Chinese pan heated tea more, die Japanese stuff has the strongest effect.
Growing up we grew a ton of green tea. As a kid I would smoke a few really big bong rips and there was definitely something going on other than oxygen deprivation.
While EGCG is anxiolytic, its onset is much slower than L-theanine, which is also anxiolytic, so that (plus placebo) is the calmness they were experiencing in the time frame of the first tea.
Actually I am way to far bound to science to accept chi. But I will go to meditate under a watefall with the yamabushi in Japan. Cold water works so the ingredients in tea but I don't need chi as a explanation. Every kun fu master who defends itself gets a bad reality check when his chi doesn't work in a real MMA opponent.
I lived in China for 9 years and actually went to tea shops to practice speaking Chinese (because the tea shop people are forced to converse with you as long as they are serving tea.) This guy knows his stuff.
Tea drunk is just getting relaxed from drinking tea. All teas gets you differently because they all retain different biological compounds. The science way to look at it
Can definetly relate to tea being more of a feeling than a taste. I drink tea daily(not the fancy stuff here). I started drinking tea as a coffee alternative, but have stuck with it because it works wonders for anxiety and just makes me a happier person in general.
