Fans Stranded in Al Bayt - World Cup Diary Part 2 🇶🇦

After checking in to the Fan Village in Al Khor, the closest accommodation to the Al Bayt stadium, i made my way to the England V USA match.
It ended goalless, a rather tame and bland affair but still an amazing experience to be in a World Cup stadium. What i didn't realise was the utter chaos outside the stadium where hundreds, maybe even thousands of fans were left stranded as they tried to make their way back to their overly priced accommodation.
I eventually started walking back to the fan village, the closest official accommodation to the stadium, which was still over an hours walk along busy roads and dark desolate walkways.

Wow. That would have been really terrifying walking along that road after midnight. Great review of the situation on the ground as it stands.

Not really mate. Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world. Been living here since 2015, we leave our homes and cars unlocked. I leave my phone on the table at Starbucks, go to the counter to place my order and come back, the phone is still there.

@@coolbeansbroski3164 I've lived in Saudi for 7 years. It's not about being mugged or robbed more to do with walking along a busy main road with no street lights etc. Cheers Mate.

How did you get stranded when all you had to do was follow the crowd into the metro or the shuttle bus. Both were free. If you did your research you’d know taxis have to take another road to and from Al Bayt that’s why they don’t like going out there. Mate, I had no problem with transportation at all, I prepared myself though. Cmon you can’t be that naive.

We were stying in al khor area so no direct bus back to the fan village. There is no metro at the stadium only Lusail which is 30 minute drive, and the wrong direct to where i was staying. So taxi was the only option to get home. The drivers there don't want to do short trips only longer journeys in to Doha area. Hundreds of people were in the same situation. When you say 'do your research' there is virtually zero information about all these little technicalities. I know of several other people who started to walk home because the taxi drivers refused to take them.

I had the same problem with Al Khor village. There’s no shuttle or metro service to that fan camp. And no taxis want to do a short trip there.
