Fans fresh from a midnight premiere of M. Night Shymalan's THE LAST AIRBENDER weigh in on the film's quality. As you can see, it appears Shymalan just didn't care. Video Credit: ReelzChannel
Adrian Hahn it was a bad joke, it means the movie was so bad that you would even watch twilight before seeing it. Well i think twilight is really boring and the main actress and the dialogue is extremely bad (cant say anything about the books tho) so yeah :P
Yes because this movie killed the avatar series from ever getting another movie from a good director and it screwed up everything that people love... And there is no freaking emotion!!! Heck bella from twilight have more emotion!! At least twilight is hilariously bad for some while avatar is heartbreakingly bad for many.
The dude in the fedora just spitting legendary facts. "There was a young lady dressed as a kyoshi warrior and she's actually taking her constume off because SHE WASN'T EVEN IN THE MOVIE" straight buried me 💀
I cracked up because I heard someone in the background agree with him. The movie was so bad that even though I was a child, who could be suck into any movie and find something about it entertaining, during the movie (in my mind and sometimes under my breathe) and as I went out of the theater I just kept saying, “That movie was so bad and I hate it!!”
You know it's been 10 years and I still haven't found a way to finish 20 minutes of this movie, I swear I hate it so much, I always thought i had bad taste of movies till I searched about it and I was like yeah am not alone. Like literally I didn't like it, And I always like ATLA since I was a kid, like my favorite show.
I do remember when Nickelodeon aired a short featurette when it was coming out ten years ago (Jesus I’m old) and Shmalyan said that his favorite episode was the one introducing the Kyoshi Warriors and unless I’m remembering it wrong they might have shown a clip. Like I at least remember the gang being tied up and a bunch of girls like in the original episode
I remember paying for an early pre-release showing of the film - tickets were more expensive and limited seating, etc., but the theater was packed with the most loyal of the ATLA anime crowd. The opening theme rolled: the room erupted into cheers, costumed kids and cosplay adults alike shouting and smiling: you could feel the excitement and eagerness - and shortly thereafter the silence, the sighs, and the dispirited enervation. After the movie, we somehow all simultaneously congregated outside that theater, most of us absolute strangers, and just vented for hours together about how terribly this movie sucked. In that time, we shared ATLA anime stories and personal tales, people played music and danced: it was the best damn part of a really lousy experience.
Indigo F I recently found out my little sisters in law had recently watched the movie and without seeing the show and they liked it. I was appalled..., I was disturbed... i was so upset I can’t put it to words. This atrocity needs to be buried so that doesn’t happen to any more children.
i think all the fans hate this movie, so they still live together in harmony. i think the bigest thing that separates fans is Zutara vs. Katang shippers. Shamalon isn't a threat. some day a good director will come along and actually make a good atla movie, probably not for a while though.
Rogue Skywalker If they made an actual film franchise of it, they'd probably have to divide each season into two movies to make it right. But I think what reeeaaally divides fans these days is the debate about whether Legend of Korra is good or not. (I really like it, for the record)
Fun fact: I remember watching an interview with Shayamalan, and he was asked why he didn't include the Kyoshi warriors. He said that he loved them too much in the cartoon, and that he just couldn't put them in the film because he would've given "too much attention" to the kyoshi warriors, so he thought it best to not use them at all. Shayamalan, just tell the truth and admit you didn't know what the honest f**k you were doing when making this film and you didn't include them because you were lazy and rushed the whole movie.
Diego Belaunde it was more because Shaymalan wanted to travel the world while filming. He got a 150 million dollar budget to make this movie. In the end, the travels became too expensive which forced him to continue filming in a studio. You could also see that when katara is supposdly water bending without moving any water. Or when She and Aang were practicing and there was no water. All the budget money he had left was spend on the final fight when Aang used the Avatar mode to bend all that water to defeat the fire nation. There was obviously not enough money to create that great water monster Aang turned into in the north pole. You could also see that when Appa appeared a few times. Horrible cgi. Momo wasn’t even included. I wonder how the fuck 150 million dollar wasn’t enough to make a good movie. It literally looked like an amateur movie made by a few students. And I am sure they would fail considering the amount of exposition and lack of Action in the movie.
3 years late but uhh..i dont think he "rushed" it. because there's so many thing happen in season 1.its impossible to fit in one movie unless maybe they want to push it to 3 hours
DAUS artwork If he wanted to fit everything in the movie then he should’ve used some of the important parts in season 1, just like the time Aang became that koi fish water monster in the northern water tribe. The thing about that is that Shamalamadingdong or whatever his name was seemed like he had absolutely NO KNOWLEDGE about the show, it was like he never even watched it and just asked a co worker who watched the whole show about it then just rushed to make it. I’m not trying to be racist but most of the fire nation is meant to be chinese and not indian, and the water tribe shouldn’t even have so much white people because it ruined who the characters were in the show. Tbh it seemed like he rushed it because he left out SO MUCH IMPORTANT INFORMATION AND SCENES FROM THE SHOW INTO THE MOVIE. Shamalamadingdong ruined a great show, and he should find a new job.
My sister and I were SO EXCITED to see this, went to the midnight showing and everything...we left the theater in complete shocked/enraged silence, sat down in the car, turned to one another, and said “That...wasn’t a good movie.” Single most heinous thing to ever be shat onto the big screen, and I’ve seen some STINKERS in my day.
I dont know man... i literally walked out of the new Hobbit movie, i couldnt stop laughing at how bad it was. At first people told me to shut up, then they joined in. I wasnt alone in walking out.... and ive never even considered walking out of a movie before
@@TheLifeOfKane nah, dude. the Hobbit was bad, but not AtLA movie bad. there's literally a universal meme and joke that goes "There is no AtLA movie in Ba Sing Se". because universally, fans agreed it wasn't a movie they EVER wanted to see or hear about again. I know many people who liked the Hobbit film, ones that loved the LOTR trilogy too. but I've never seen a movie be as disappointing for an ENTIRE audience as AtLA was. and like you said, people weren't at first in agreement with you, but soon they came to agree. whereas there never was any defending the AtLA film.
I love it solely based on the nostalgia watching it for the first time when I rented from my local videostore and being once a fan of the animated TV show and collecting those McDonald's happy meal toys and the outrage from the fans back in 2010, Good times good times.
@@Njbear7453 To be fair, the movies are so overpriced. Especially the food. Love the ambiance of the cinema, but nowadays it’s easier to just watch them at home using streaming services.
Today people are afraid to be called haters. Because every form of criticism, regardless of how detailed and valid it is, is considered hate. If you rate a video game or movie under 8/10 it means that either the product is garbage or that you are a hater.
Fun fact: One critic who panned M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water said that if Shyamalan wanted his children to judge the quality of his work, he should start making movies for Nickelodeon. Little did he know that would prove to be an even worse idea.
@@ZemeckisTEN I think it's called The Servant or something It's a prequel in The Boy universe but there's like 0 connection, M. Night and his daughter directed the episodes
@@Agentshadling_The Servant_ is in the same universe as _The Boy?_ I have never heard this and even after Googling "The Servant M Night The Boy" I still can't find any evidence stating this. The first episodes were good but as the show progressed I just felt like it was giving me blue balls without allowing any kind of climax. Then when the other cult members were introduced it just became too campy. Somehow I watched two seasons of it Peak-Pandemic when AT&T included Apple TV+ for free as a consolation after a data breach. I made it past 20 episodes despite never feeling satisfied but the compelling mystery and decent acting kept me going. I also wish someone would turn on the lights or open a window every now and then. I get that it's a horror story but does it have to be THAT dark?
There was an Anime club at my High School, and there's one at Illinois State University. I know this cuz a girl in my HS Anime club goes there, and she said it's awesome
I feel so bad for the women dressed as a Kyoshi warrior she didn’t deserve to see that awful movie also watching it gave me a mental breakdown to the point I almost burned down Walmart and got arrested
I miss 2010 so much where everyone agreed on hating on an actual bad movie with actual good points. Nowadays, people will like a great movie and hate on it a couple of months later for no reason and attack others for still liking it smh
Dude! Why would they tear down M. Night Shyamalan 🌙?! Sure, he made a bad movie, but he's a very nice guy. I met him on my 15th birthday 🎂. He was very nice and he really seemed to like me a whole lot. And his parents are doctors!
Dante (zuko) and the voice of katara (forgot her name) said it themselves not to see the movie lmfao ''worst play ever'' yeah that was terrible'' ''but the effects were decent'' - Sokka
That whole episode was basically like one of those “characters react to reading / watching their own book / movie” fanfics, and it perfectly predicted how the ATLA movie would turn out... Except I think the Ember Island Players actually did it better.
June Cosplayer:"June wasn't in the movie 😡." Another guy:"Their was a young lady dressed as a Kyoshi Warrior and shes now taking her costume off because she wasn't in the movie." Me: Gosh be grateful they were spared.
Me. I saw this movie with my dad when I was 14 and just graduated middle school. I'm 20 years old now and still can't believe he thought that this was a good movie.
What makes me so angry is that they missed an opportunity for an epic trilogy. The story has the potential to be another lord of the rings. The material was already there, but they FAILED! The actors sucked, the pacing was pathetic, they left out so much good material. This is what happens when movie studios just don't care! Whoever directed the Avengers, should have directed this movie.
More specifically, I meant the pacing of the movie. You may not agree, but in my opinion, the avengers had very good pacing. The director got in lots of content, without destroying the pace. Also, I felt like even though there were many characters, they all got adequate attention. I loved the avengers overall. As far as the last airbender, they totally rushed it and cut out important scenes. I knew the movie was a big fail when they freakin revealed who the fire lord was halfway in the movie. Anyway, there needs to be a reboot with a new director, actors, etc.
i really don't understand how they could make a movie this terrible when they don't even have to write the story and when the entire world is already explained in the show, all they had to do was make it shorter and pick some half decent actors. like you said i can really see a movie about the last airbender become as good and popular as lord of the rings if they get good actors and someone better than m night smalalablablabla to write it, maybe they should just ask Peter Jackson to write it. I think he was very good at picking the most important parts from the books to show in the movies and the casting was great, and he really respected the original books so he would respect the original show too. (or atleast not change the entire fucking main characters to emotionless super serious dumbasses)
I wish Disney can see that with their live-action remakes. They're making they're classic animated movies look bad with those live-action remakes. With the exception of The Jungle Book (2016).
to be honest, the entire Airbender franchise needs to be about five or six movies. You can't fit the entire book on in one movie. There is too much ground to cover. The first movie should be about Aang waking up and seeing how the fire nation has destroyed his city and how people resent him for his absence. We have to see the Kyoshi Warriors and Jet and his band of rebels. We have to meet Roku and Kyoshi and the movie ends. The Northern Water Tribe shouldn't be reached until the 2nd movie. That way you have more time to develop Sokka and Yue's relationship. You can introduce Katara's journey to be taught by her master. Aang didn't even meet the Firebending master that caused him to fear fire. We weren't even introduced to Katara's healing ability. We didn't even get to meet Sokka's boo (whose name I forgot) and she's an integral part of the finale. We should NEVER see the fire lord's face. Only his silhouette and the fire nation palace shouldn't be so vibrant. IT should be dark. UGH, maybe I should make this movie.
I was thinking the same (how about Book 1 Water, Book 2 Ice, Book 3 Earth, Book 4 Metal, Book 5 Fire, Book 6 Lightning?) but then the actors would probably grow up a little too much... I guess if they extend the arrival of sozin's comet, that wouldn't be a problem.
Like i would be happy to watch six movies instead of the crap they are making now if they were as good as the cartoon or just better than this steaming pile of shit they make now
Or you can shave off some of the filler and use the episodes that are filled with the main story as well as some backstory, it would be a very epic and focused movie. But I'm with you, six Legend of Aang movies please lol
Don't watch it, lets just say the only reason the girl who plays Katara got the role is because she is the daughter of the Producer. And she has to carry the plot with her wooden horrible narration.
to be honest, the Ember Island Palyers did a better job than Shamalamadingdong, the movie is awful. Just as a movie its bad but it down right spits in the face and is an insult to all things Avatar
Nope, it's worse. It made you cringe because Aang didn't smile once or act goofy, Kamara didn't act motherly and dorky, Sokka didn't crack a single joke, Yue was the queen and her father was apparently dead, the earthbenders had to basically do stupid dance moves ( an entire group) just to move a small boulder. No Kyoshi warriors. None of the races were right, Zuko barely had a scar, (you couldn't even see it) firebenders couldn't make their own fire so they had to use fire around them and they got scared of Uncle Iroh when he made his own fire. The characters were dull, it barely described the story. Aang apparently could go into the Avatar State at will. Master Paku wasn't even in it. Azula wasn't in it. So. Much. Was. Wrong. With. It.
the last bit was the best. I feel sorry for the actor that played Aang. In the behind the scenes you can see that he is pretty much like Aang in real life but then Shamalan come along and told him to act different. It would have been better if it was directed my someone else. The pronunciation of Aang name was wrong and it really annoyed me.
Me too, fact I feel bad for almost every actor in there. Guy playing Sokka actually does joke around like a real Sokka. Also, the kid playing Aang really does look like he's trying but Shyamalan gave him a no sense of direction on camera. They really should have left the camera rolling for behind the scenes.
@@joyunicycle I am not 100% sure but I once heard the girl playing Katara was basically rich already and whined at daddy for the part and thats why Katara and Sokka were white. If that's true I don't feel bad for her at all.
@@d-1381 I don't know about that (I'll have to look it up), but Shaymalan said he wanted her in this movie. Still a bad choice. Even if she wasn't white, her acting for this film makes reading a textbook more interesting.
@@joyunicycle on a positive note, we got this hilarious video and I'm just glad at that time I waited for reviews and I didn't watch this or Dragonball in theater
Or just don't make a movie period. People can still watch the show and get satisfaction. That's the good thing about it being a cartoon rather than a book or manga.
@@TheYetixOUTx I'm a film buff that loves old movies and reads books like fuckin' The Sound and the Fury and shit, and I think The Last Airbender is one of the greatest fuckin' things in the whole fuckin' world. I also have tourettes, goddamn monkey cocks and old lady big titties. Excuse me.
Exactly, like forget everything you know about the tv show. No character development/relationship building, the effects were terrible and they have ZERO EXCUSE for that because Avatar came out a year prior so the effects were DEFINITELY possible!!
The creators of the show, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, served as executive producers and were initially supportive of the film production. However, both of them ended up being very unsatisfied with the finished product. In a podcast interview from 2014, Konietzko revealed that "A) We didn't want it to be done at all. Before anyone was attached, we didn't want it. And then B) If it was going to be done, we wanted to do it, but they weren't going to let us. C) When they attached Night, we just thought, 'Well, this is what we've been dealt. We'll just offer help when it's asked of us, and if it's not, we'll stay out of the way.' In the beginning, it was more positive and we offered help, but then we had a big falling out." They've even mentioned how they gave a lot of input that went nowhere as it all got pushed to the wayside. No wonder it was sooo bad!
Well...if you want to be correct, they "didn't" mess up the name. In a sense, it was the American cartoon creators who messed the punctuation of the character's name. Shyamalan was only trying to correct it, but by doing that fucked up what everyone grew up with, which is the wrong punctuation. :/ I took madrin chinese back in high school and we learned a punctuation aphalbet similar to ABCs and one punctuation was aang and I remember thinking of avatar and wondering why we said it differently. Anyway, yeah he should have let just used the punctuation in the series instead of the correct ones.
GaarasIchibi88 Them saying the names "correct" could have worked IF they gave all the character accents. Without the accents it's just awkward saying a few words correctly, and the rest with American accents. Case and point, in Aladdin, his name is said wrong. But if they pronounces his name right it would have been weirdly out of place since every other word in the movie is pronounced with an American accent.
bluekyokitty doesn't matter. they are trying to make a movie from a cartoon, then the name sang should be pronounced the same way it is in the cartoon and the way every viewer knows it by.
+Erin Mack LOL! Same here XD I watched the entire series this year and loved it a lot then it got me curios to see what everyone's reactions were to this movie. I still watch it from this day.
"Why the hell did they call me Ung, that's like the noise I make when I take a SHIT!" ~AANG "Hey, you thought you had it bad, I was played by a guy who looked like he worked for customer support!" ~Zuko
"Pffft whatever. I've got you all beat. I was brought in only to say one line as a teaser because they really thought that they were gonna get a sequel. They didn't." ~Azula
@@kageokami99 Azula is actually the best character in the movie, since she only says one line and smiles creepily in the camera just like Azula would, and honestly her actress actually looked and sounded decent... So of course I bet Shyamalan would ditch her and get a much worse actress if he had actually made the sequel.
Katara: not only did I get whitewashed like Sokka, basically my only purpose in the movie was to narrate, and they made it look like my water bending sucks since it’s in slow motion and none of my movements actually match what the water is doing! Calm down? Calm down?! *I’M COMPLETELY CALM!!!!!!*
this is the greatest movie review ever. it really captured the audience affection to the film. i could not have agreed more with the result. i feel sorry for the fans. lol
Same! Also, if the Netflix adaptation is good, there will be renewed interest in the franchise, and hopefully even better quality in future projects! And, if not, then there will be great review videos to watch on RU-vid!
@@afterdinnercreations936 lol I think the latter is the case~ I don't know what they were doing with the hair for Iroh's or Lieutenant Jee's beard or Yue's head top area. I agree so much with the criticism of the looks of some characters being so off in other ways too. I thought the look of Wan Shi Tong was horrendous, but I look forward to improvements for the future seasons. I also felt compelled to recently rewatch the original series and was blown away by the story again and of course but also the beauty of even the first few episodes.
The 3 Books lived in harmony until Shamlamadingdong Attacked Only Michael Dante Creator of all 3 Books could stop him but when the world needed him most he vanished 9 years later and no-one found a new creator but netflix picked it up Although netflix makes brilliant films they still have alot to learn to perfect a live action avatar But I'm not sure if netflix can make it good....
Hazel Grey well yeah cause even if we seen them they wont be in good use cause we saw them like around in book 3. And it a movie its not like they gonna cover every single episode the idea of this movie is to have aang learning water and that all
It's funny how the only fan in this video that gave The Last Airbender a positive opinion is not even a fan of the series it was "based on". In fact, that fan was a Twi-hard. Go figure.
Not to mention the movie was incredibly racist. Avatar takes place in an Asian/Native American inspired fantasy world, populated by Asian/Native American characters, and yet in the film it was incredibly racially diverse, with the Asian Fire Nation as the villain and Aang, Katara, and Sokka as the white heroes. It's horrible. Don't try and use the argument that the world or the characters are not actually Asian because they clearly are and there is no point in trying to claim otherwise. But that's just scratching the surface, the name changes, the acting, pretty much everything is awful in this film. I'll admit the imagery and some of the fight scenes were impressive, and I actually didn't mind how Aang looked, as he did somewhat resemble Aang from the series, but other than that...
People back then knew a horrible movie when they saw one, now days movies like Barbie or Force awakens movies that are absolute trash, fans be drooling over anything trash
Me and my friend rented this movie from Red Box and it was HORRIFYING!!!!!!! We didn't make it....we only watch barley 15 minutes.......and we were OUTRAGED....we were yelling the entire time. "EVERYTHING IS WRONG!!!!!!" I'm glad I didn't pay good money to see this piece of crap they call a film. Heck. It was a waste of a dollar renting it..... This movie ruined the story of the Last Air bender and the art that made us love the show. We couldn't say enough bad things about this movie.... M. Night Shyamalan! its kinda cute how you think we're going to approve a sequel.
No you have to watch the entire film and then find a review like this one or the great parody The Nostalgia Critic did. Anytime I want a laugh I pull up multiple reviews like this one here which I found by accident. It did not disappoint. The guy's comment about Aang's name not be said?? Brilliant! Too funny! It also makes me love the show even more. I remember crying the 1st time I saw the final scene with Aang & the the Fire Lord/Phoenix King. It was that good. I enjoyed this clip! (lol)
I had GOOSEBUMPS for it all the while I was watching the trailers over and over again. I was SO excited because I was like "OMG!! the bending... AH!" They even managed to make it look like it really does in the TV show in the trailers... and then... I saw the movie. And I was stabbed, 50 gazillion times, in the heart.
It’s like seeing an ad for a restaurant chain that advertises delicious looking food but when you actually order it in person it looks like it was made by a toddler
What I would've said if I was there: "it felt pretty rushed. all the best parts were in the trailer. the acting wasn't very good, the story didn't fit very well and... it's just bad. I don't even get why Night would care to adapt something he's probably never seen before" and my responce to did you guys like the movie?: *Gets in rage pose* "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
The movie almost ruined the show for me. I thought I was forever scarred from it. I'm just now getting to where I can watch the cartoon comfortably again.
The movie actually got me into the show. I watched it as a kid (when I was too young to understand that it was a bad movie) and the magic system interested me, so years later I decided to check out the show. It's a terrible movie, but I'm glad it exists. Otherwise I would never have seen Avatar
@@mafiagrim in my defense, I was a kid and I hadn’t watched the show. I only went into the show MUCH later (partially because I remembered being interested in the universe by the movie)
What they should’ve done is instead of making a movie based on the first season they should’ve made a movie about Aang before he ran away. Growing up as a monk. And then ending with him making the ball around himself and Appa and ending there or maybe ending on the cliff hanger of waking up to Katara. Fleshing our Aangs story would’ve made it a much more forgiving task since there isn’t much to compare it too. This should’ve ended up being as many movies as Harry Potter. On the other hand I’m glad it didn’t because now the original creators are remastering the series in live action on Netflix and there are getting GOT levels of money to do it and they said “this time we won’t have to white wash it like before.” Plus they had nothing to do with and hated the movie as much as everyone else.
