The whole movie in and of itself is one of the most beautiful pieces of art ever created by humankind. The visuals, the music, everything is perfectly in sync and it flows so smoothly.
I've heard that Disney wanted to make imaginations while listening to this piece of music so I think that's why Disney animated this segment for the audience so they can imagine animation while listening to this piece of music?
And to only think that THIS was the opening of Fantasia... Toccata and Fugue certainly sets the stage for a journey like no other! The animation is spectacular, and brought a tear to my eye because of how beautiful it is. Fantasia is beautiful in every sense of the word.
This in my mind is one of the most unique segments in Fantasia, it's a powerful opening, the song itself is iconic, the way the beginning of the song fades into this airy type of music which is the start of the animated parts of it. My favorite of all is 2:12
It wasn't a total flop; it was one of the highest grossing movies of the year. However, it had the absolute worst scope creep and it was insanely expensive.
Quite possibly, but as Deems Taylor explains at the start, it's meant to lull the audience into feeling like they're in a symphony concert hall rather than a movie theater, with a focus on musicians. Then you drift, allowing abstract thoughts to enter your mind. Clouds, vague shapes resembling musical instruments, and finally you're brought back to the conductor of the performance as it ends.
A great segment but anyone else get a laugh out of the green and black block waddling away to a sinister note at 4:30? They're clearly setting it up as the bad guy. XD
With the news today that Criterion is working with Disney and Pixar to do a "WALL*E" release, I'm praying now that a "Fantasia" release can one day happen.
That would be the tocatta. This piece is called Tocatta and Fugue in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. Search it up. Along as some others of Bach's, his music is truly God like.
A Christian story Toccata before the pass over and crucifixion event. Fugue after the crucifixion event and the slow ascension into the third day. For it was said that the lion of Judah would have victory over all of death and the devil.
