This is truly one of the greatest masterpieces Disney ever released. The amount of effort Walt put into it's production is unimaginable. It also contains his favorite song, "Feed The Birds." I love it and every other song in here.

OMG childhood!! Believe it or not, Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins) is now 88 years old. Her birthday is October 1st. She’s 1 year older than my Nana. Her birthday is October 25th. She’s 87 years old now. Also, Dick Van Dyke is now 98 years old & is still up & at em, dancing & everything which is amazing for that age. Idk how he even does it. Great movie for those two! 🙂

Fun facts: - Julie Andrew’s was discovered when Walt Disney saw her perform in Camelot - Julie Andrew’s wanted to star in My Fair Lady, but they chose Audrey Hepburn to play the lead role -Julie Andrew’s was pregnant when Walt Disney asked her to play Mary Poppins, so he delayed filming until after she had the baby - the first ever movie scene Julie Andrew’s ever filmed is the moment when they appear in the chalk painting in the new outfits - Dick Van Dyke was supposed to have a cockney accent but never got it down and no one corrected him because he was trying so hard and was so enthusiastic about it - Dick Van Dyke asked to play the role of old man Dawes and film during lunch, having to eat in full makeup. One of the things he would do when tours happened was he would cross in front walking like he does in the movie. Then, when the tour cart got a good few yards away he would take off in a full sprint passed the tour - the actors playing the children did not know it was Dick Can Dyke as the old man. They thought it was an old actor, so their reactions are genuine. - the penguin dance scene was completely improvised. The animators told film to have Dick Van Dyke dance and they will add in the penguins. It was such a huge undertaking because of all the movement and kicking Dock Van Dyke did. He would keep hitting the penguins so they had to redo the animations so many times, having the penguins dodge and jump over his movements. It was incredibly tedious and difficult. - the lady who plays the bird woman was specifically chosen by Walt Disney. He treated her with the highest care and respect when she came on set. It was the last thing she ever filmed before she died. - the actor that plays uncle Albert is Ed Wynn. He was a voice actor for the Mad Hatter in the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland. Walt Disney was such a huge fan of Ed Wynn he wanted a role for him to play in this movie. That is why uncle Albert was in this movie. - Step in time was told to be shorter, but after Walt Disney saw the choreographers do the part where Mary Poppins joined in, Walt made sure that was included, along with more stunts, and the whole scene ended up being over 8 minutes long - feed the birds was Walt Disney’s favorite song of all time. He would have the Sherman brothers come in and play for him at the end of the work week - Julie Andrew’s won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the title role in Mary Poppins, beating Audrey Hepburn who was nominated for My Fair Lady.

I really enjoy Mary Poppins Returns! The music isn’t iconic like the original’s, but it is decent. I especially enjoy Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks (his “A Conversation” with his dead wife is just heartbreaking), and Lin Manuel Miranda is charming as hell-you can see why he sweeps Jane off her feet. Emily Blunt does a good job with the difficult task of playing Mary Poppins after the brilliant Julie Andrews. The cameos are also fun-I especially appreciated seeing the actress who played Jane in the original, identifiable when she says, “Many thanks, sincerely!”

Oh, boy. I just have to tell you how Julie Andrews got the role. So, when Disney first got the idea to do this film and started casting, she was on Broadway doing My Fair Lady and Camelot. He came backstage to talk to her, and asked if she'd be interested in flying out to Hollywood to give the movie a look, see if she was interested. Her response? "Mr. Disney, I'm so sorry to tell you this, but I'm pregnant." His response? "That's okay. We'll wait."
@ifeelpretty5790
@ifeelpretty5790 5 месяцев назад
Also she was turned down for the My Fair Lady movie because she wasn’t a name at the time but she got the last laugh by doing Mary Poppins that same year and won numerous awards including the Oscar for Best Actress! When she won the Golden Globe, she even thanked Jack L. Warner, the My Fair Lady producer who refused to cast her!

I read at least three of the Mary Poppins books growing up. She wrote eight in all, from 1934 to 1988, all featuring the Banks family, and the Disney adaptation takes elements from most of them. The book Mary Poppins is even more strict and less charming than the movie version, but she gets things done and always achieves a happy ending.

I always tear up when I hear "Feed the Birds". Since you enjoyed _Mary_ _Poppins_ so much, I think you'd also enjoy _Chitty_ _Chitty_ _Bang_ _Bang_ (1968), also featuring Dick Van Dyke (actor who played Bert and the old bank man who died laughing). It's a similar vibe to _Mary_ _Poppins_ if it were set some decades earlier and in a magical realism-type world (the line between reality and fantasy is blurred in the slightest steampunk way).

Another great Disney Musical from this era to watch is Bedknobs and Broomsticks with Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson (the father) from this film. A lot of fun facts for this film: 1. Many of the "women" who wait outside to apply for the nanny position are actually men because they couldn’t find enough ugly women. 2. In the animation sequence people like the songwriters, Julie Andrews and multiple others do voices and David Tomlinson voiced Mary Poppins Parrot umbrella at the end. 3. The choreographers Marx Beraux and Dee Dee Wood would go on to do the choreography for many other classic musicals including: The Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Slipper and the Rose. 4. The woman who played the Bird Woman is legendary Actress Jane Darwell who starred in over 100 films and at the time she had been retired, but Walt Disney convinced her to be in the film and personally sent a car to pick her up everyday and treated her like Royalty. This was her last film before her death and she said how wonderful it was especially the way Walt was for her. 5. Besides being Bert in the film Dick Van Dyke as Mr Dawes Sr when he would be dressed up in all that makeup he would troll the backlot tours by making them think it was an old man and cross in front of them as slowly as possible then right as they were about to pull away he would sprint off as quickly as possible! Also that credit was at the end of the end credits as Navckid Keyd and then the letters unscramble themselves to spell Dick Van Dyke plus there is a chorus reprise of Let’s Go Fly a Kite. 6. Julie Andrews was hoping to be in the film version of My Fair Lady which she started on broadway, but Warner Brothers wanted someone who was actually a star as Julie had not been in a film yet so they went with Audrey Hepburn. However the story doesn’t end there as Julie Andrews was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy opposite Audrey Hepburn for My Fair Lady and she won and in her acceptance speech she ended it with “Finally my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie and made this all possible in the first place Mr Jack Warner.” and everyone lost it including Mr Warner. Then at the Academy Awards this film was nominated for 13 Oscars and won for: Best Actress, Best Song for Chim Chim Cheree, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing. It was nominated for Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Costume Design, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Scoring Treatment, and Sound unfortunately losing many of those to My Fair Lady. 7. Ed Wynn (Uncle Albert) was the Mad Hatter Walt always wanted to have him in something he appeared in several other Disney films including: The Absent Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, and Babes in Toyland. 8. When they were in the early development stages of the film Walt gave his songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman a copy of the book to read of what they thought would be good material for the film and they underlined six chapters in red crayon and when they went in to see Walt they handed him the book and he chuckled because in his copy of the book he had underlined the exact same six chapters in red crayon as well. 9. The inspiration for the song “A Spoonful of Sugar came with Richard Sherman’s son came home from school and he asked what had happened to learn he had been given the polio vaccine to which his dad asked if it hurt and he explained no they put the medicine on a sugar cube on a spoon and we swallowed it. A literal spoonful of sugar helped the medicine go down. 10. When the brothers were playing songs for Walt one day a couple hours they thought would work for the film at the end he asked them to play that bird woman song again to which Walt walked over to the window saying “That’s what it’s all about isn’t it?” Referring to the theme of the film. It was Walt’s favorite song the studio ever made and every Friday Walt would meet with the brother and just talk about things going on at the studio and other projects and at the end of their meeting he would always ask them to play the song by saying “Play it” and when they finished it he would send them off saying “Have a good weekend boys.” 11. Even after Walt’s death Richard Sherman would still go into Walt’s office on a Friday afternoon and play the song and on what would have been Walt’s 100th Birthday he went the celebration when the dedication of the Partners statue was unveiled and played the song saying it was only for Walt at the end of the song he blew a kiss to the statue said Happy Birthday and walked off, but he was told later on that when he was nearing the end of the song out of the clear blue sky a single bird came down near the piano and off back into the sky. 12. All of Mary Poppins was filmed indoors. 13. The old woman that children encountered when they run away from the bank is the actress who voiced Cruella De Vil in “101 Dalmatians”. 14. P.L. Travers who was the original author of the Mary Poppins books had refused Walt Disney’s offers to make it into a film for over 20 years and so in the late 50’s he actually went to meet her in her London home hoping to use his personal charm on her and so soon after she finally gave him the rights to make the film, but during the early stages Robert Sherman who was one of the songwriters along with his brother said “She was a witch” and absolutely hated everything everyone was wanting to do, but she was basically only a consultant, after the release of the film she wanted nothing to do with it and in the early 90’s she allowed the studio to only do two things in regards to the property.If they so choose to a sequel film could be done. A broadway show, but no one involved with the original film could be part of that project, 15. When Glynis Johns received the call from Walt to be in the film she though she was going to play Mary Poppins, but Walt wanted her as the mother and so she said as a little incentive if she could haver her own song for the film and so the Sherman Brothers rewrote a previous unused song called “Practically Perfect” into “Sister Suffragette”, 16. Many songs and sequences for the film were thought up including where the children would spin a compass and it would take them to different areas and a different song for each area where one was called North Pole Polka, another Tea in Timbuktu, while the other two unused songs found their way in other Disney films later on with The Land of Sand being reworked to become Trust in Me in The Jungle Book from 1967, and The Beautiful Briny Sea would end up in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, 17. Several of the chimney sweep dancers were the old men on the bench in Enchanted during the song “That’s How you Know” 18. Know before Walt had chose Julie to play Mary Poppins several people that were thought of as possibilities included: Bette Davis and Angela Lansbury then one sunday night the Sherman Brothers saw on the Ed Sullivan Show an excerpt performance of a broadway show called Camelot where Julie Andrews was the lead actress and they knew immediately she was the one so the next day they marched into Don Dagradi’s (another writer on the film) office and he said to them did you see the Ed Sullivan Show last night so all three of them went to Walt’s office and so then Walt went to see a performance of Camelot in New York and met with her after the show and was able to convince her to be in the film and Walt was willingly to wait as she was pregnant at the time and Julie’s husband then also ended up part of the film as he designed all of the costumes, 18. Dick Van Dyke ended up in the film because of an article Walt read of how he didn’t like that films then were becoming as he described as “dirty pictures” also it helped that basically everyone knew who Dick was as he had a hit tv show with The Dick Van Dyke show and this was only his second film after being in a film version of the broadway show Bye Bye Birdie, 19. The inspiration for the song Let’s Go Fly a Kite was actually from the Sherman Brothers childhood as there dad as they said would make these wonderful kites that would fly all day, 20. The inspiration for the song Step in Time is actually an old english folk song called Knees Up Mother Brown and the Sherman Brothers learned about it as Peter Ellenshaw who did the vidual effects and matte paintings and glass paintings for the film was basically they resident Brit taught the dance to on3 of the writer Bill Walsh and Walt Disney and Richard Sherman saw the three of them with their elbows linked together in the office kicking their knees up, 20. The inspiration for the song Supercalifragilisticexpiladocious was the Sherman Brothers wanted to make it so Mary Poppins gave the children a gift in the form of this ridiculously long word and the medley for it was two British Folk Songs: Boiled Beef and Carrots along with Any Old Iron, 21. When on the carousel the horses match their personalities, 22. The two children in the film Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber appeared in a total of three films for Disney together this was their second the previous is The Three Lives of Thomasina and the latter was The Gnome Mobile unfortunately Matthew would die of Food poisoning in the 70’s, 23. The reason there is Penguins is instead of waiters is that Walt Disney saw Storyboards where they were men and he said “Waiters always reminded me of penguins”. One other thing I wanr to note is my advising against watching Saving Mr. Banls and Mary Poppins Returns.

Women in America got the right to vote in 1920 but this movie takes place in England. There it took to 1928. There the suffragette movement to extend voting rights to women began in 1903, so with the mother advocating for this, the movie is set between 1903 and 1928. However, Wiki sets the date specifically at 1910, two years before the Titanic sank and four years before the outbreak of the First World War.

Not sure how true this one is, but: Allegedly the original ending was just him walking into the fog. No explanation of where he was going. That's why the imagery is so beautiful. But then they got the idea to change it so he has a real change of heart and fixes the kite.

You should watch the 2013 movie, Saving Mr. Banks, which tells the true story of how Walt Disney tried to convince Mary Travers to allow him to make a Disney movie out of the Mary Poppins books. It shows Walt and Disneyland at perhaps their peak appeal, and shows the difficulty of the movie song and script writers trying to write what they want while convincing Travers they are not ruining her beloved characters.

Interesting facts (that I remember off the top of my head): 1. Out of all the songs they made for this movie, “Feed the Birds” was Walt Disney’s top favorite. He loved it so much, that he would call one of his guys into his office and ask him to play the song for him on the piano I believe it was every week. 2. In addition to Bert, Dick Van Dyke also played the old father of the banker. There’s even a story, forgive me if I get it wrong, of when they were filming, Dick went out still dressed as the old geezer during a break and saw a cart of guests on a tour of the studio. Because he was Dick Van Dyke, he decided to have some fun by pretending to be the old man he was dressed as and walk across the lot incredibly slow in front of the cart. As soon as he made it across, everyone drove away. So imagine their surprise when the tourists and tour guild look over to see the feeble old guy running right next to them🤣 3. The robin Mary Poppins sings to during “A Spoonful of Sugar” is an audio animatronic, which was huge back in the day and something Walt was incredibly famous for. Along with that, notice when they sing the word “down”, their tone goes up. I know there’s a whole word, description, and reason they did that (besides the fact it was a brilliant fun idea) but of course I can’t remember because there’s too many interesting facts about this movie. Bonus: the guy that plays Uncle Albert also played the Mad Hatter in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. It’s funny you noticed he sounds like King Candy from Wreck it Ralph because the guy that does Candy’s/Turbo’s voice also did Hatter’s voice in Once Upon a Studio since the OG voice is, sadly, no longer with us. He’s too busy having a tea party with Walt.

Facts: Matthew Garber who played Michael Banks died in 1977 at age 21. Dang. He died of pancreatitis. So sad. Julie Andrews sung in various movies and such but she lost her singing voice due to a botched vocal cord surgery to remove nodules in 1997. She now uses her voice in other ways, such as writing children’s books with her daughter. Glad she didn’t let the loss of her singing voice keep her down for long. She is one social lady. She’s even Dame Julie Andrews when she got the honor from Queen Elizabeth II for her contribution in to the performing arts in 2000.

One thing that sets the songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman apart from most others, is their formula of making up words to either cheat a lyric rhyme, OR to give you something to take with you in memory. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is one such example. But some of their other films also have this formula. "Snoopy Come Home" has the song "Fundamental Friend Dependability", and a version of Cinderella called "Slipper and the Rose" sings the song "Protocoligorically Correct" song.

This movie was really technologically advanced for the time. If I remember correctly, they used some kind of special material in the camera for the painting scenes so that the live-action actors and the animation could be put together. Not only that, but I'm pretty sure this was around the time Disney first started working with animatronics, which looked really lifelike back then. The Robin on Mary Poppins's finger is an animatronic.

King Candy's voice was based on the Mad Hatter in the 1951 version of Alice In Wonderland. The Mad Hatter was played by Ed Wynn, who also plays Uncle Albert. That's why they sound similar - because King Candy's voice actor was intentionally imitating Wynn's voice.

What's really shocking is that in the UK the ultra-woke and moronic British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) raised the rating for this fantastic children's (and adult's) movie from "U" or "Universal" to "PG" because the word "Hottentots" is used.
