Really beautiful writing here, evoking some strong Skyrim vibes!! I love your blending of live instrumentalists with samples! Could be a great video to do a deeper dive in how you prep music for a player and process those samples, or even with you record your own guitar/guitarviol, what mics and setup you like and processing you generally use. The blended sound you get is really lush and beautiful!

Hi Jonas, Once again an excellent video. Thank you so much for the insights into your work. Musically, the fantasy genre is certainly a lot more challenging, right? I mean in terms of the choice of sound palette, stylistically and also in terms of orchestration. And certainly also in terms of the question: How much is too much? In any case, I wish you much joy and success with this project. It already sounds great. I'm really looking forward to the finished soundtrack! Warm regards, Frank

@@jonasfriedman more of what you did here. Taking a few live players and fitting them in with midi. It’s a scenario that comes up a lot in small budget projects, so I’d love to hear more about how to produce it convincingly!

We are very lucky to have access to this type of videos nowaday , do you have books recomandation on modern scoring ? Thanks a lot have a nice day
@jonasfriedman

While there’s tons of books on music theory and traditional scoring techniques I don’t personally know of books that address these more modern techniques. i think the best way to learn and study atm are video lessons courses and an enormous amount of practice

Nice! Musically, there's a lot of interesting chord choices happening. Curious to know how you developed the melodic ideas without picture? Did you take some stock footage to help ideate the composition or did you just keep free writing until something sounded solid? On a side note, I see you're applying Alan Meyerson's tip on using the Kramer Tape Mastering Big and Open preset. 😉
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 6 месяцев назад
I wrote lots of music without picture - simply inspired by a concept or story. These are usually suites and then they get edited to picture later. In this case it was a pitch so there was no picture or even concept to go off of other than “emotional medieval fanatsy” Amazing attention to detail for the meyerson preset 🤯🤘

Great, great video! Do you have any tips for which bass (usually/often) to use? I often use HZ strings bass but it is difficult to control and when I turn to synth bass it seem like endless patches to choose from. How do you attack this issue when you work on a project? Thanks!
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 5 месяцев назад
Omnisphere has a patch (i believe) called age of illumination which has a nice simple bass. Also, if I remember correctly musio / cinesamples has a super simple sine bass ptach that is meant for blending with the orchestra for that extra body.

Nicely done and well explained. Thanks. Did you use any remote session services like SessionWire or Audio Movers for the sessions with the string players?
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 6 месяцев назад
The players I use I’ve been working with for years so we have a bit of a short hand and don’t need any remote services. I send them a folder with the track - an isolated wav file with just their parts solo’d and and then a midi file to make sheet music out of. They send me back the files and I pop them in and mix!

Hey Jonas. I'm just curious why you start your sketch with an "old", lower quality sample library? Why not start with something closer to what you're ultimately going for? I understand about playability and system resources, but there are plenty of great sounding libraries that are very playable and system friendly. Just curious. Thanks again for the great content. I hope you are well!
@jonasfriedman
@jonasfriedman 6 месяцев назад
Great question @magickman93 - for me personally I just like to start with the most barebones version of things as I can because if I can feel connected and inspired to what comes out of that, I know that when I begin producing things it’ll be even better. It probably comes from my songwriting and artist production days where I’d want to get a song to sound great and have an emotional impact with absolutely nothing but a guitar and vocal or a piano and vocal - no more than 2 things…I always knew if that sounded impactful then when it was fully produced it’s would only get better. Similar to how mixing engineers listen back on REALLY crappy speakers (like or ns10’s used to be the the thing or even a $30 boom box) For this particular patch I also just like the attack and playability - it makes working quickly really easy so I’m not hindered by having to do almost any significant programming which I would be redoing anyway when breaking the strings out
@Magickman93
@Magickman93 6 месяцев назад
@jonasfriedman Hah! Funny analogy! I'm a 30+ year veteran mixing engineer, and I never liked or understood referencing mixes on bad sounding monitor speakers. When I first started out, I used to do the whole "listen on NS10s, listen in the car, listen on a boombox, etc." song and dance; but for many, many years now, I just listen on the flattest, most accurate monitors I have available to me (which for the past decade or so has been Focal Twin6BE's)! :) But I totally get the "songwriter demo" analogy. Makes perfect sense. As always, thanks for your insight!. Best regards.
