War is often seen thing in fantasy worlds. It might be in history, it might be in the future, it might be the focus of your story. But how did it start? What are causes large enough to drive war?

Which one of these reasons have you used for war?
@LordDany
@LordDany Год назад
A mix of All of them On the world Im building for example The Malevick Kingdom is a mostly human supremassist they eradicate non human species like dwarfs and elfs. Theres a jungle area where tribes figth almost on a cicle of permanente wars and peace almost like a religious war agreed by almost All tribes. Theres a desert where clans of ogres and goblins banded together and they are on a stalemate with the other city states of the the ogres and goblins where forced out from the south by gnolls, forcing them north to the desert.

I really enjoyed your choices on historical events. Some I knew others I never heard of. So it gave a different perspective that most don't talk about.

I agree that the subject of war is a very extensive topic that probably should Merit its own miniseries. I am just thankful to hear how was even start in the first place because that is definitely something of contention even among historians. Thank you for this very valuable content!

Thanks for another interesting presentation. Some thoughts: Thucydides said that men go to war because of honor/pride (Trojan War - Helen of Troy), greed, or fear. "An accident waiting for a place to happen." Michael Yon says amateurs talk about what sparked a war, professionals talk about the conditions that allowed a spark to burn out of control. His viewpoint is about predicting upcoming wars. Don't look at what could trigger a war, look at places where conditions are ripe for a war. He also says that pandemic, famine, war, cause each other in a vicious cycle. He's of course thinking about the near future. Search RU-vid for his interview with Jordan Peterson. On defensive wars, that's Peter Zeihan's thesis on Russia's actions. He says Russia has indefensible borders (no mountain ranges, deserts, seas) and are driven to reacquire the old USSR borders to feel secure. Search RU-vid for his many presentations on Russia (he is a consultant and makes many presentations every month, so his RU-vid videos are repetitive but slowly evolve over the months). The inciting incident for a war, the official reason a war is declared, is called the casus belli. A classic casus belli is a blockade. But many people think a blockade is relatively benign. In Star Wars Episode 1, someone says he doesn't know why the Jedi are getting involved in Naboo, it's just a blockade. Dude, a blockade is standard casus belli which is why JFK was careful to call his blockade of Cuba a quarantine and not a blockade because he didn't want to start a war. A political commentator recently said that China could interfere with Taiwan without going to war e.g. with a naval blockade. Dude... Another theory is Donald Rumsfeld's (and others') weakness is provocative. If a war breaks out it is because deterrence has failed (if your enemy thinks he can't defeat you, he won't start a war). Or what the Roman Vegetius said, If you want peace prepare for war. Related is "You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you" often attributed to Trotsky. See Quote Investigator for an investigation on the origins.

I have heard Putin's arguments that he needs to defend his borders and hence invaded Ukraine. I'd posit that he's lost the propaganda war on that one. But I didn't want to use such recent history as an example since the algorithm can be very mean about controversial topics :) I agree on the point of the trigger vs the conditions. The first world war is a prime example. Decades of arms race and the race for Africa had Europe spoiling for a fight. The Grand Duke catching a bullet was just the last straw. And yeah, people have a strange take what words mean :) A blockade is a serious thing. It's drawing a line and saying: cross this and I'll shoot you. It's a very aggressive and militaristic move.

@@JustInTimeWorlds in the case of Russia's war with Ukraine, nationalim plays a big part I think. Anyway, another infomative and interesting video. Thank you! It would be interesting to hear about hiw wars end and about the long-lasting consequences of wars.
@JustInTimeWorlds
@JustInTimeWorlds Год назад
@@tautvydastamasauskas I'm not sure it's nationalism. I'd go with conquest, but most wars are a mix of trigger conditions.
@tautvydastamasauskas
@tautvydastamasauskas Год назад
@@JustInTimeWorlds I feel that there is a component of nationalism as Russia feels humiliated after the collapse of the Soviet Union in a similar way that Germany felt humiliated after WW1. I think it's some kind of 'trauma' losing an empire and getting less relevant on the world stage. I actually think the UK has been having similar feelings of diminishing relevance. However, being British as they are, they went to the ballot boxes to vote for Brexit rather than going to war.
@JustInTimeWorlds
@JustInTimeWorlds Год назад
@@tautvydastamasauskas one could definitely make an argument for such being the case. Sort of the dying throes of a once mighty empire that can still hurt as it lashes out.

I think Matt Colville had a very interesting thought about writing war in that he said if there was peace, that someone was working hard for it to exist, because in the past there wasn't really a time when so many countries as now weren't at war. So, if war started, that someone must not be there anymore to negotiate and manipulate peace into existing.

This was a very insightful video!! And I would like to add something about territory expansion wars (on the Roman case), and it is that sometimes those wars were fueled by a desire of a general to gain prestige on the Roman sociaty, so that he would be able to get into politics later (kind of like our modern politics saying things like "I made 2.000 houeses for the poor" type of thing, but the Roman one was bit more bloody). So, if you happen to have a belicist society, you should consider if victory over the battlefield can be seen as something which would aid a politician carrear, and if it does, which objectives would be searched for.
