The velocar, or velomobile, Fantom's Nephew is the result of my since early childhood present dream of the mythical Swedish velocar Fantom, facilitated by the DIY Community AtomicZombie.com
Fantom's Nephew is according to swedish regulations a electro assisted bicycle and I use it as my daily commuter to work. Space enough in the bunk for two kids or at least four sacks of groceries.
It's Fun and practical! ...and quite eco-friendly aswell!

Well done, its fabulous. For short commutes, trips to the shop, kid drop offs it the bees knees! A lot of people are locked into "car mentality" and anxious about bikes like these. But when you ride one, you realise other people love them and you are actually respected out there. The ELF trike is really catching on in the U.S. which shows change can happen.

2016 I began building my 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel steer pedal kart. My design was very different than anything else I’ve ever seen. I got the frame almost done before the Lyme disease I was treating in 2015 returned. It was moved to the other barn until I dismantled it almost two years ago. I’m looking for aluminum tube I can get inexpensively so I can start over on the frame.

The first time I saw this video, it cost me an almost new Strada velomobil, which I have been enjoying ever since ;-) Now 5 years later, this "DIY / selfmade Velocar virus" came back. And even though my wife said we didn't have room for an extra vehicle in garage, she got me a small welder for my birthday :-) The "Street Fighter" building plan is also bought from "Atomic Zombi" and I have already learned a little about Akerman- and Single-point steering which should make the velocar stable. Now I just begain looking for wheels and parts Last time and now I still find this Swedish "Phantoms Nephew" the nicest looking and cutest DIY / self-built Velocar, I have ever seen and I have seen a lot.. But only time will tell if I succeed in making my own version, with "Phantoms Nephew" as inspiration ... So Your nicely-made videos have been seen closely many times, trying to decode the mesurements/shape of your build I don't know the necessary plywood "stick and glue" building technic, but Its mainly the shape and finish of this wooden faring and room for e.g. children or grandchildren, which make this Velocar so special... Kind regards, Kjeld :-)

As glimpsed by @1:18 the electric assist runs the right rear wheel end now there are also a disc brake there. I pedal and foot-brake on the left rear wheel. So: No actual differential but in practical use it behaves as if there was one.

Hi Phantoms Nephew’s father Thanks for the link to the other velocar, but I still like yours the best 👍 * What is your experience with mechanical Ø160mm ? disc brakes ? * Can they make the car brake straight, without frequent readjustments of the brakes ? * Do the Ø160mm disc brake have enough stopping power ? * And what is the white fillings in the edges/corners of your faring. Maybe epoxy with some kind of fillings ? Thanks in advance 🙂 Kind regards, Kjeld :-)

Hi! Thanks for kind words! My experience with mechanical std MTB disc brakes is good! I have one disc brake on right rear wheel and a pedal brake on left rear. No problem when brakeing hard with just one of them. Enough stopping power, but gets overheated in long downhills. Then one should have more brakes! Yep; Fillings is epoxi mixed with some kind of filler (whit fluffy stuff). I have bought all my epoxi stuff from www.nilsmalmgren.se, nice guys and comprehensive downloadable guides on their homepage! (In swedish, though) Happy building!

A really nice velomobile. Nice that you have built it yourself.I have used a Leitra velomobile for about 7 years. It has no motor but is quite easy to drive. I made about 40000 km with it as I commuted to work for 6 years (25 km each day). After retireing I bought an Orca (whithout motor) that is such a nice velomobile. It has now a cover on top so I can go all year around. My son bought the Leiba for 2 children as you have seen on my video "Leiba Cargo on tour".I really liked your video.

Thanks, Mortier! Yeah, the original Fantom had wire steering w a wooden roll, carefully specified as beech! I did however not follow the Fantom plans, I used the Atomic Zombie Street Fighter plans for the frame. As for electrification I bought a electroassisted conversion kit consisting of a front wheel, controller etc. I ditched everything on the wheel except the motor hub and attached a sprocket to that and the rear axle and - voila!

A great bike, sadly in my province of Ontario Canada this is not allowed,. Why because it has four wheels a bike can only have three wheels at most. Maybe I will build a three wheel version like British Morgan. But there are some beautiful French Cyclecars that could be revised to this design also. Maybe I could do a three wheel bike with children's training wheels on the back? You have captured that "French" Flare as well, or I guess it was always a Sweden Flare and I have been mistaken.
@FantomsNephew
@FantomsNephew Год назад
Thanx! Definitively a Frech flare on the rear seat/luggage compartment, that is severly inspired by Mochet. Maybe the police have some heavier criminality to look after than one wheel to many on a bicycle? …but that’s a gamble…
@brianferguson6278
@brianferguson6278 Год назад
No the rules are what there are, so best to work within them, three wheels is what it will be. Now what I am thinking is similar to your bike (Atomic Zombie Modified) in three wheels with a lite 3mm plywood skin on spruce 19mm square framing. You will note the two dimensional fabrication that would make it easier to work on this link. Just a longer total length than this motorized Kart. The only question I have is the main tubing size and thickness? Can you provide what tube size you used for your main and steering tubes. The balance of my design I have figured out from the CyclceKart build sites. I have a mid drive Cube Kathmandu EXC E-bike so still not sure of mid drive or hub on this build, 500 watt is max we are allowed in Canada. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f7m3Q8fRNPc.html

@@FantomsNephew The plans are $16.95 each US Dollars, for a poor Canadian that's a lot of money. But if you purchase four different bike plans it's only $19.00 for all four, so being the "cheap" Canadian I purchased four different designs. And 700 pages later my second hand printer finished the print out. The 40 x40 x 1.5 box beam seemed too lite to myself, so I thought I would ask how you did your bike. But from what I can see it appears to be more than OK. You have great Ice, Strong Black Ice that Ice Boats love, maybe a DN iceboat in your future?

I have watched your Fantom's Nephew video many times and you truly have built an amazing velocar! I became inspired to build my own velocar after watching Paul Elkins Pedal Car video and I stumbled upon your wonderful machine. Just a few questions: 1) Do you think the new 'fat tires' trend in mountain bikes could solve your suspension problem? You could use maximum inflation in the summer (or just change out the wheels altogether) and reduced air pressure in winter. I live in eastern Canada and will have the same 'winter woes' that you have! 2) Can you tell us some of Fantom's Nephew's dimensions, overall length and width? Wheelbase length and width? Weight? Thanks again for the great build and fantastic videos! Dan Halifax, Nova Scotia
@FantomsNephew
@FantomsNephew 7 лет назад
hermanator2 Thanks for nice words! 1) I now use Schwalbe Crazy Bob and these are 20x2,1" which is a bit fatter than the standard ones I started with. Even fatter would probably make it smoother. But I dont have room for fatter tires so I havent tested. I think fat tires would be smooth and comfy BUT perhaps increase rolling resistance to much. My mkII, whenever, will have suspension, I think! 2) I don not have the exact numbers, thinking of making a "asbuilttour"-film but here is a few (metric) estimates: Overall length: approx 2,25m. Width 0,85m. (Should be able to squeeze through your ordinary door...) Wheelbase length: 1,7m Wheelbase width : 0,8m Weight: Its not lightweight, maybe ca 100kg. (Have check that!) I truly recommend the (Canada-based!) DIY forum at www.atomiczombie.com, I have a thread there and there are loads of help to get from forum members. And inspirational drawings to get if You want to! Good luck with your build!

Hello phantom I have watched this video many times. It is a great inspiration to me. I am going to try to build something similar using the streetfighter design from atomic zombie. I am curious to know if you experience a lot of road vibration with four wheels and no suspension?. It is indeed an elegant design. Well done! Big fan in Boston
@FantomsNephew
@FantomsNephew 2 года назад
Hello! Thanxalot,! Glad U liked it! There are some vibrations sure enough, but that depends (of course) on road quality. I am blessed with smooth (mostly asphalt) on my ordinary routes. Hence, vibrations are not an issue. On the odd shortcut or in the winter, however, one has to take it easy. (Check out my Frostbite video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0fPBUtMRlNI.html) So; If (when?) there will be a MkII I think I will add suspension to the rear wheels, which carry the better part of the weight. …but no suspension is easier to build and I do not regret the way I made it on this ride! It is more fun with a simple contraption on the road than an half built over engineerd solution in the workshop! 😁 If I could I maybe would put on fatter tires. But unfortunately (I prefer to call it) there is no room for that, the space between rear wheels and fairing is to narrow. Have that in mind in your design process! I you haven’t been there yet, I highly recommend the building forum @ Atomic Zombie. Loads of helpful people! Happy building!

Yes that is super helpful thanks for getting back to me. I have downloaded plans for the street fighter from atomic zombie which looks to be a much lower version and perhaps narrower than phantoms nephew? The original streetfighter is definitely too low and too narrow for my needs. I hope to make a four wheeled vehicle possibly with suspension .9 meter wide and 2.4 meters long. It seems that pudding fat or tires on the device will be simpler than trying to create suspension in the rear

I first wrote you on Velomobile Drifting, and thought it was a production vehicle, my mistake , and I apologize ... Now that I know more about it's origins, I will be following it up by a visit to atomic zombie, and the library to find more answers to all my questions, but first I have to find a ride it's raining...! Thanks...!,

The 25 km/h cruising limit, has that something tot do with the electric assist? Here in Belgium the assist may only help until 25 km/h, give a maximum of 250 watt assist and may only work when paddling, otherwise it is not an electric bike but a motorcycle... I love the project and I would love to make one myself, but I am not handy and wealthy enough for that. Maybe one day I will do it. Enjoy your velocar and greetings from Belgium!
@FantomsNephew
@FantomsNephew 8 лет назад
Yes, definitively! Sound like the same rules i both countries. Max 250W that are allowed to give assistance up to 25kmph. No pedalling, no assistance but you don't need to pedal with great effort. Without assist I belive 10 kmph is appropriate for me..... :-D
@brechtthebest
@brechtthebest 8 лет назад
+Fantom's Nephew where did you get the assistance? I only know the system of bionx, the in wheel hub motor, so I think that won't work in this case. Oh and something else: how was your experience with the atomic zombie plans?
@FantomsNephew
@FantomsNephew 8 лет назад
+Brecht Schatteman I bought a quite simple conversion kit aimed for those who want to convert their ordinary bike by changing the front wheel to a hub-motorized one. (Which I do not recommend, front forks are normally to weak). I looted the wheel and kept the hub motor and the electronics. This is described in my building thread on atomiczombie forum. The AZ plans were really good, I did however deviated a bit while I wanted a slightly different scope. And if there were any questions left I was helped by the forum members.

@FantomsNephew
@FantomsNephew 4 года назад
Cowtownbaldie Thanks! Thanks to the electric assist hills are ”doable” but when fully loaded with kids and/or stuff i choose routes without the steepest of hills. With only 250W motor one should benefit from a ”mountin climb” gear for the now direct drive motor. ...that’s for Mk II, I guess...😁

Egor Samovar Hi! Glad U liked it! 1) Plywood is 4mm (+one layer of glass fiber and epoxi) 2) Wheelbase 170cm, width 80cm. Fairing height 80cm, length 216cm, width 70cm. 3) MkII will have suspension, if I make one...😄. It works, but one must keep eyes open to avoid potholes... 4) Nearby Karlstad, Sweden. Egor Samovar The idea is stolen from the Mochet velocars and I find it very practical! Makes the velocar to somewhat of a cargo bike. I would maybe create a more elegant/sleek look without it but on the other hand; It is a velocar that makes 25km/h and I like a form factor matching that. 😀 For a truly elegant and more sleek design; check out this awesome build: ru-vid.com/show-UCPzA6H3DbwRJaT0UqLCHQfA

I stumble on the same plans a while ago and I also have the same kid dream you had! I live in Canada and winters are long and cold too... I think I could do something like you did (same front, but a trike with a closed floor). I love to build things but I'd like to know if you enlarged the front beams (between front wheels) to accommodate the fairing? If not, how it handle road corners (turning radius)? How it handle rough roads? Do you think I should give it a suspension?
@FantomsNephew
@FantomsNephew 3 года назад
Hi! I dont really know how the turning radius turned out in reality but it is sufficient! No problem in normal driving situations. But one does not make a U-turn on the bike path... I am not sure but I think beam is close to the plans. Mk II, if/when it comes, will have suspension, at least at the rear end. Have to driv slow on very rough roads. ”Normal” gravel road is no problem so suspension is nice, but not neccesary. Closed floor, at least under the seat, is a good idea. I’ve lost a few things from my pockets down the road! Happy building!
@La.máquina.de.los.sueños

@@FantomsNephew Thanks for the infos!!! Very very appreciated!!! I love your steering modifications! In my province, I'm restricted to a 3 wheeler and a 500 watt (36 volts) engine (electric assisted bikes regulations)... so I'll fuse the "streetfighter" (4 wheels) front (+ your steering modifications) to the "street fox (3 wheels + back suspension) back and put a Morgan'like fairing over it. I'll close the floor and let 1~2 traps in it. I'll probably use some drawer railings to make 1~2 sliding panels to easily close/open these traps, because it's always useful to be able to put a foot down when needed (getting in/off and backing off)... and then fully close the floor to keep my stuff in and protect me from the elements (cold, bugs, rain, snow etc). For the front suspensions, I might try to replicate the "ICE recumbent trike front suspension" (super compact)... because they are too expensive to buy (~1500$) and too lightweight (made of aluminium). I barely sleep at night... overthinking about it 😂
