This is my first time that my face got swollen after 4 times (years) of having tear through fillers. You really help me by staying calm. Because I went nuts before this video. I told the clinic that I want my money back and the fillers out. They told me to wait for 2 weeks. So i have an appointment within 2 weeks. I really hope my face will be back to normal by then or better! Thank you for the tips!!

This was so helpful! I had under eye filler yesterday and woke up today in a bit of shock from the swelling! I wish I had known to prop my head up while I slept. I did sleep with an ice pack for half the night and I can't imagine what I would have looked like without it. Thank you for the info - SO HELPFUL!!!

BJ C, so happy that this information was helpful. Most patients experience a significant amount of swelling the morning after. And you know what? That's perfectly normal. It's the natural way your face reacts to treatment. The swelling will go down in a short amount of time (usually within 24 to 48 hours after treatment).

Oh my! Glad I found you. It’s been three days since my lip filler and though its reduced significantly its still noticeably swollen on one side. I was almost on the verge of panic but I’ll give it another two weeks. Hopefully it will have settled. Like your simple straight forward insight.
@DavidMabrieMD
@DavidMabrieMD 2 года назад
Hi Venessa Shaw - you found us! We love doing lips and hope that you will love your final results. You’re so on-point to give your lips a few days (up to 2 weeks) to settle into their final shape. Swelling after lip treatment can range from slight-to-OMG (especially in the first 48 hours). Keep being patient (although some of us love the “swelling-look”). Asymmetric swelling (more pronounced on one side than the other) is totally normal. Working in layers, over time, is key to getting just the right shape and size. Most patients need 2 appointments to perfect their pout. Be sure to schedule a follow-up appointment for the best results! Thank you Doc, you are the most informative, I have the exact same thing as the lady in the picture. Swollen under-eyes because of fillers. Doc, you explained it well and now I know what to do to bring the swelling down. Thank you! Wish my doc told me about this, and I would have done this on a 3-4 day holiday weekend or something, because I have to go to work on Monday. I can only take so many days off. And people will probably ask me what happened. Eek! O_O;

Thank you so much for your insight. Just like the lady in the picture you have shown, I have the same puffiness. I had my treatment yesterday and am still in my first 24 hours.watching your video and seeing how the ladies puffiness came down in a few days and your explanation that the first 24 hours are the worst, I feel much more comfortable now as I was worried how long the puffiness would last. It was very reassuring to watch your video. Thank you so much 🙂

Hi - I wish you had been my doctor! I was referred to one by my dermo and while I didn't particularly like his personality that much he did have all the qualifications and was voted a Top doctor this year. Plus I didn't want to just waste the $250 consultation fee which I could apply to any procedure. I've had this depression/indent under my right eye for years now that's always bothered me. I decided to finally do something about it, after consulting with an ocular surgeon and my dermo, it was decided filler would be the best option to try for now. I had the under eye filler - Restylene - done this past Friday. He used a needle and injected in about 3/4 areas around the eye using a full syringe on both sides. I had questioned about a full syringe on my left side as the depression there wasn't as significant but he said to have it look even he had to use the same amount. I made sure to be clear I didn't want to be overfilled or look unnatural. It's been two days now and the swelling hasn't gone down at all which has me a little concerned as from from everything I've read there's at least some lessening by day 2. The swelling is mostly the area of the cheeks under my eyes. If I see no lessening of the swelling by Wednesday should I get hyaluronidase injected to dissolve some of the filler? I'm hoping tomorrow I see a big difference and can see more clearly what the end result will be. Thanks in advance!

Ive had it done in my hands and the filler swells excecivelsy,In your experience is there a Ha filler that is truly LESS hydrophilic, that can be purchased from acecosm or any other Korean stores I buy from. I do very small amounts on my hands, lips and and upper eyes lids. The problem is I fear all the swelling will permanently stretch the skin, Your input is appreciated, Keep up the good work!
@DavidMabrieMD
@DavidMabrieMD 2 года назад
Hi MsNzbody - thank you for your questions. We’re not familiar with fillers purchased from "acecosm" or Korean stores, so answering your question is a bit tricky. Fillers in the U.S. are not available over-the-counter for self-use. Considering we’re unfamiliar with the brands/types of fillers available for direct purchase, here are some general thoughts. HA fillers can vary in composition depending on manufacturer, which can affect how they react to water molecules (hydrophilicity). Some retain more water than others. Swelling after any injection can occur, which can range from subtle-to-severe and be accompanied by bruising, regardless of how much filler is used during injection. That being said - a very serious word of caution - I strongly recommend that you do not inject yourself. For your own safety, see a qualified, medical professional for filler injections. Even in the hands of the most experienced Injectors, filler injections have risks. To avoid injury - including severe injury, like vascular occlusion which can cause blindness and/or skin necrosis, see a professional. ~Mabrie Facial Institute

Most patients say that the lips are the most uncomfortable to have injected but we do our best to make every treatment as comfortable as possible.The lips can continue to be tender for a day or two after the injection. I recommend applying a warm compress because it decreases swelling and is also soothing.

Hi Dr. Mabrie: If you do have significant swelling like this patient had, how can you tell the difference between whether the swelling is normal or a sign of an infection/allergic reaction to the filler?
@DavidMabrieMD
@DavidMabrieMD 8 лет назад
Great question! The best way to determine swelling from dermal filler is to wait. 90% of swelling dissipates in 2-4 days, with the rest decreasing at 2 weeks.

Hi Diana, we are sorry to hear that. Late-onset inflammatory reactions to hyaluronic acid fillers happens 1% of the time and can be treated with oral steroids, and with hyaluronidase (filler dissolvent) in the case of lumps. We suggest you get in contact with your injector as soon as possible. Should you need any further assistance please send us an email to hello(at)drmabrie.com. ~Mabrie Facial Institute

what about bruises? How long do those stay? I'm going into week 2 and I have slight bruising but only at the site of the injection, so it looks like i have dark circles and as if the hollowing never went away. Thee swelling comes and goes, but the bruises are not getting any better from what I can see. I use ice, and arnicare but it's still there. When will it go away? How can I make it go away? Did something go wrong? Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing from you Dr.
@DavidMabrieMD
@DavidMabrieMD 7 лет назад
Hi Etta Matthews. Bruising and swelling are unfortunate side effects of dermal filler treatment but there are a couple of things you can do to help. Recovery time is different for every patient, bruises can last 1-3 weeks (though I have seen them hang around longer) and swelling can last up to 2 weeks. I recommend that patients stop taking anything that will thin their blood (fish oil, vitamin E, Motrin, etc.) 1-2 weeks prior to their treatment. Blood thinners can raise your risk of bruising. I also suggest that patients only ice for the first hour after treatment and then apply a warm compress starting the following day. Ice will help prevent swelling, while the warm compress will help reduce swelling. Unfortunately, I do not know how long it will take for your bruising and swelling to go away. I always ask my patients to wait a full 2 weeks for swelling/bruising to subside, though sometimes it can take a bit longer. If you have not seen any improvement in 2 weeks you may want to make an appointment with your doctor to make sure everything looks normal.

Hi Jane, We recommend to wait at least 4 weeks for the filler to settle and swelling to go down. Should you still see any lumps and bumps we recommend reaching out to your injector for evaluation. In some cases the filler needs to be dissolved as it has been placed too superficially. We hope this information was helpful. ~Mabrie Facial Institute

Hi, 5 months after the hylaronic biodegradeable dermal fillers under my eyes in my year troughs. I got a thermismooth treatment. One week after that I woke up with acute swelling under one eye the second day the other eye also swollen I was given steroids and got an antibiotic treatment as well the swelling resolved completely in one week. This happened again exactly one month later. This time I got al of my evaluation and a CT scan also. All tests came out clear I didn't have any infection. My CT was also unremarkable. However I had edema under my eyes. Which was resolving gradually every day. The initial swelling was extremely acute. Could my fillers be causing this ?
@DavidMabrieMD
@DavidMabrieMD 7 лет назад
I'm sorry to hear about your experience with delayed swelling after filler injections. Yes I have seen this occur, 3-5 months after injections patients may experience swelling or fluid collections. The swelling is usually self-resolving. We don't yet know why this happens in some patients. Fortunately it happens rarely and usually is self-resolving.

@DavidMabrieMD Месяц назад
Thanks for the comment 12044m! We totally get it, sometimes with places like the under eyes and lips the swelling looks great! But because of the swelling, it can be difficult to gauge whether or not your injector has put the appropriate amount of filler in. That's why at our office, we typically inject filler over the course of at least 2 appointments to allow swelling to die down and accurately assess your progress. ~Team Mabrie

Hi, I did filler for the first time in my cheeks and lips. The first time was on 19th June and I had a return visit on 27th and added some more to equalize both sides. I got some swelling at night and I contacted to the emergency but, they said it is nothing. Next day it got very swollen and couldn't open my eye. The doctor who performed the procedure removed the product and I took antibiotics and some cortisone tablets It got better but the swelling came back again. She injected many times but, still so bad warm, hard and swollen. What I have to?
@DavidMabrieMD
@DavidMabrieMD 5 лет назад
Hi Arvin, thank you for your question. I'm sorry to learn that you're experiencing some possible side-effects from dermal filler treatment. Swelling is not uncommon up to 2-4 weeks after treatment; however, the warmth and hardness accompanying your swelling should be assessed by a qualified Physician. Without seeing you in-person or knowing the type of filler used in your treatment, diagnosis and remedy is challenging. If you're able, please schedule an appointment at my San Francisco office. If you're unable to come to my office, you can email me privately at: hello@drmabrie.com. We'll do our best to help find a referral near you.

The example shows significant swelling under the eyes and is a worst case scenario. With that said, I always like to tell my patients to prepare for the worst, as every person swells differently and every treatment can cause a different level of swelling.
