This easyer to do than actually sailing a real square rigger...no cold,sore muscles dry; or constant maintenance; paint n varnesh. I'm an optic tech one time,so all related in one way or another...

Wow, this was fascinating. Ive been an amateur woodworker for years, and have done models in the past, but was always on the fence about building a ship. After spending an afternoon watching these, I finally got one, and cannot wait for fedex to arrive.

I loved your comment about getting $2 an hour for a shipbuilder if you are lucky. I restore old John Deere tractors and I tell people when I sell them that If I got $5 an hour I would still lose money. It's what you love that makes things beautiful, not money. The extra care you give while building your models shows the love you have for your art.

Love your channel. I've been building models since I was a young teenager and you still are teaching me things I have never thought about. At the moment I'm building the model San Francisco II Galleon S.XVI. This model i started at least 7 years ago. What I love about it is that I can pick it up and start building again at any time. Since watching your channel this year I have started the build again and it is starting to look like a Galleon now at the rate I'm going I hope to finish this model by the New Year. You have so many idea's and tips and tricks that in every video I see something new and go and say OH. I have to remember that. Thank You and I look forward to many more videos. Mike

Very nice. Thank you. I pick up a lot from your videos... I had to laugh about your little aluminum block tool..... And I am not laughing at you... I am laughing because I did a similar thing years ago... I was young, my friend was a machinist in a shop. So they were doing all this metal work, lathes, drill presses, mills, end mills, shapers, and other stuff that I don't even know what it was. The point is, there were scraps and end cuts all over the floor near some of these machines.... Almost all of them were perfect cubes, or perfect rectangles, in a variety of sizes... Some were really small, some were bigger, but they were all perfect square angles.... So I asked if I could buy them, and they all laughed at me... The owner guy says "It's all scrap! It's going in the hopper outside! Take whatever you want off the floor, or out of the hopper!" So I took piles of these... that was probably 30 years ago... I still have them. I have used them a million times... Very handy to have around... They work good as weights too. Mine are all steel, so the bigger ones are kind of heavy... Anyways, great job. I really enjoy your videos. I hope you keep doing them. Best wishes.

Thank you for being willing to share so much. I'm into small rowboats and fishing boat models now but as you said, they can be difficult too, sometimes impossible. Your tips have helped me solve so many problems and even fix mistakes! I'm trying to keep several projects on the fire. Currently, a french field mortar and a couple of fishing boats, oars included. I'm struggling with the art of planking but I'll get there because you offer so much help! Any chance you will build Sir Shackleton's Endeavor at any time? That is my ultimate goal.

Hi Olha. I have great admiration for your way and techniques of building ship models. I stole many a technique from you! One part I keep struggling with is which glue to use. One pulls threads, the other doesn't dry fast enough. I'm now trying thin, very liquid wood glue (D3). Maybe you want to give away what kind of glue you use? I hope - like many model builders with me - to see many more beautiful videos from you. You are a huge source of inspiration to me. Gr., Arie - Netherlands.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Год назад
Thank you very much! I actually used cotton threads for the first and last time on my first model. I decided to save myself most of the problems. I use 100% polyester thread. I no longer have such problems as stretching or sagging of the ropes due to humidity, no hairiness, and most importantly, polyester threads produce more realistic ropes in scale. And I use CA glue only to fix seizings and rope ends. But when I used cotton threads, I also did not impregnate them with glue or wax - it is better to use a lighter...
@Yente01
@Yente01 Год назад
Hi Olah. Thank you for your detailed explanation, this also helps. But maybe I wasn't very clear because what I actually meant was which glue you use to build the model. Therein lies my problem. I always see you making the wood connections with very thin, white-colored glue. I'm curious about that. If you have time - in between builds - to share this with me, I will be very grateful. Have a nice day, Arie.

Hi Olha, thank you for sharing your craftmanship on RU-vid. I'm curious about somthing. I noticed (maybe I remember wrong) that you use matte paint on the models. I have been on the Batavia in Lelystad, The Netherlands, a replica. The paints they use were glossy. Also on replica, the Prins Willem that used to lie in my former home town Den Helder, the paints were glossy. I am just curious about it. I hope you will be making and sharing many more vids with us. Thnks!!
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Год назад
Thank you for the Good question! We know the colours but that’s about it. They are likely to have been on oil base for sure. Just like the contemporary paintings. But nothing about their glossy. It's just a scale model ship, not a real ship. Imagine how glossy paint will attract all the attention! Also, oak is not used on the models, because the large grains of oak look like the Mariana Trench in scale (oak is good to imitate from walnut). P.S. It is not a fact that the same paint was used on the replicas as on the prototypes. Batavia replica is no more than rough guesswork...

The nice people at MicroMark have some Machinist's Blocks similar to your aluminum scrap, in case you need to point folk in that direction. They have also hooked me with their new PSA, Pressure Sensitive Adhesive, which is really nice for cabin glazing and fine trim (it's no fog on most transparent material, too). (As to glues I use, the answer is "yes"--PVA, CA, epoxy, everything under the sun can have a use--this is especially true for metal items..)

Your videos are awesome. Most modelers mainly men, talk way too much, and after 5 minutes I loose interest. The speed and craftsmanship of you and quick and very good explanation makes it very interesting. Keep on doing what you do. You are an artist

Another fascinating video! I build mainly plastic kits of military vehicles, but find many of your tools and techniques useful. That, and I just appreciate the craftsmanship and the attention to detail that you display...it truly is a joy to watch. One question though, how do you avoid burnout or a lack of inspiration and motivation during your builds? Especially with the amount of work and time it takes for each build...

Thank you! I'm glad you found some useful information here for you! Perhaps this is another reason why I build several models at once. Because when one gets bored, there is always another... And I am most inspired by the audience's comments!

I am learning a lot of new techniques by watching your build videos, can you please tell me what it is you use to stiffen the sails, and what is the material you use as a barrier between the sail and the forming weight..

Thank you! I'm glad you like it! From which particular video about sails did you have questions? Usually, all materials and techniques are described in the subtitles, except for my videos at the beginning of the channel...

Thanks for these informations. being president of a ship model club, I always advise, for beginner boats, that it is better to have a boat that is a little more difficult but which pleases than a very easy boat but which does not give satisfaction or dreams . But it is especially valid when you have experienced people who can guide you in the construction. When you start alone, starting to build with boxes allows you to focus on assembly while understanding the design of a model. Thereafter, it is easier to progress on boats made on plans or it is necessary to create all its parts. Which takes much longer.

Merci! ********************* Thank you! Yes, indeed! I have seen very often how parents make a fatal mistake and buy their child a boat with the words: "If you can build it, then I will buy you a ship..." And explain to such parents that building that boat is 10 times more difficult, because there are a lot of details (very small parts) and it is much more difficult to bend wood there without breaking the frame - it is not possible. This makes it sad that for their child this hobby becomes unreal from the very beginning...

Imho "Drakkar" from Amati could be the good first kit - ship is not too complex, shows how to build hull, rigging, sails, etc... and price is not too high. :) IMHO
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov 2 года назад
In general, all the Amati kits that I had to build are very simplified and can be built by beginners. At the same time, they can be upgraded to more historically accurate copies of ships, if desired...

Olga, please tell me how to properly cover the model with oil? I don't like the varnish. I bought myself "Danish butter". I tried to cover the grate for a test and I have a feeling that it will never dry out. I didn't find videos on RU-vid on how to properly cover the model with oil.
@OlhaBatchvarov
@OlhaBatchvarov Год назад
