The Merchant Navy is the name given to the international commercial shipping industry. It is made up of several shipping companies that recruit civilians as their seafarers.
Companies vary in the size of ships, types of ships, and areas of the world where they operate. Types of modern merchant ships include container ships, cruise liners, tankers, bulk carriers, cable layers, ro-ro ferries, car carriers, oil rig supply vessels and general-purpose cargo ships, and many more
There are three main operational departments on board ship: the deck department, which is staffed by navigating officers; the engineering department, which is staffed by marine engineering officers and may also include marine electro-technical officers; and the hotel or catering department, which provides the crew and any passengers with catering and domestic services.
95% of world trade goods are transported by ocean and, at a time when many industries are on the decline, the shipping demands are increasing year on year.
Ships operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with crew members rotating on leave after their vessel contract has been completed. The technical officers, engineers & crew have to work as per working hours decided by principle as per the operation.
The lifestyle at sea will depend on the type and trading pattern of each ship. The food and accommodation on board are excellent, with cabins and in-suite facilities for officers on many vessels. Whatever the ship type, there will also be the opportunity to pursue leisure interests, socialize with colleagues onboard or study for further professional qualifications. Self-reliance, self-discipline, initiative, and the ability to work as part of a team are also required, as are the commercial awareness and management skills demanded by a competitive modern industry.
