This is terminal now; the only option is for the Italians to evacuate Lampedusa and relocate the citizens to the mainland. This makes complete sense. You can't open your doors for everyone. Otherwise, you as owner of the house will have to move out to make room for outsiders. I used to see this problem at the Spanish-French border when I lived there. They had local people, often connected to the church, helping migrants from Africa into France to continue their journey north believing they were doing the right thing. Plenty of the Africans seemed charming and clearly just wanted an opportunity to make good in life. The tragedy was that the people helping them were really only naively ensuring they would live clandestinely as criminals since their very presence in France was illegal from the outset. So I have to conclude that tougher border policies are the lesser evil, starting in the Mediterranean. That's possibly something the UK could play a role in if we can swallow our virtue signalling instincts, break off from looking for war with Russia and send a few Navy frigates to the Med to help police the situation there. We would have to demand the French start to do their duty in the Channel to reciprocate though.
