Farakka Barrage is a barrage across the Ganga river located in Murshidabad district in the Indian state of West Bengal, roughly 18 kilometres (11 mi) from the border with Bangladesh near Shibganj. Farakka Barrage Township is located in Farakka (community development block) in Murshidabad district. Construction of the Farakka barrage started in 1962, was completed in 1970 at a cost of $208 million. Operations began on 21 April 1975. The barrage is about 2,304 metres (7,559 ft) long. The Feeder Canal (Farakka) from the barrage to the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River is about 42 km (26 mi) long.
The barrage was constructed by Hindustan Construction Company. Out of 109 gates, 108 are over the river and the 109th one over the low-lying land in Malda, as a precaution. The Barrage serves water to the Farakka Super Thermal Power Station. There are also sixty small canals which can divert some water to other destinations for drinking purposes etc.
The purpose of the barrage is to divert 1,800 cubic metres per second (64,000 cu ft/s) of water from the Ganges to the Hooghly River for flushing out sediment deposition from Kolkata harbour without the need of regular mechanical dredging. After commissioning the project, it was found that the diverted water flow from the Farakka barrage was not adequate to flush the sediment from the river satisfactorily. In addition, there are regular land/bank collapses into the Ganga river due to the high level back waters of the Farakka barrage. Substantial high land is already converted into a low level river bed causing displacement of huge populations. The water diverted from the Farakka barrage is less than 10% of Ganga river water available at Farakka.
फरक्का बैराज भारतीय राज्य पश्चिम बंगाल के मुर्शिदाबाद जिले में स्थित गंगा नदी पर एक बांध है, जो साहेबगंज के पास बांग्लादेश की सीमा से लगभग 18 किलोमीटर (11 मील) दूर है। फरक्का बैराज टाउनशिप मुर्शिदाबाद जिले में स्थित है। फरक्का बांध का निर्माण 1962 में शुरू हुआ और 1970 में 208 मिलियन डॉलर की लागत से पूरा हुआ। परिचालन 21 अप्रैल 1975 को शुरू हुआ। बांध लगभग 2,304 मीटर (7,559 फीट) लंबा है। फीडर नहर (फ़रक्का) लगभग 42 किमी (26 मील) लंबी है।
बैराज का निर्माण हिंदुस्तान कंस्ट्रक्शन कंपनी द्वारा किया गया था। एहतियात के तौर पर 109 दरवाज़ों में से 108 नदी के ऊपर हैं और 109वां दरवाज़ा मालदा की निचली ज़मीन पर है। बैराज फरक्का सुपर थर्मल पावर स्टेशन को पानी उपलब्ध कराता है। यहां साठ छोटी नहरें भी हैं जो कुछ पानी को पीने आदि के लिए अन्य गंतव्यों तक ले जा सकती हैं।
बैराज का उद्देश्य नियमित यांत्रिक ड्रेजिंग की आवश्यकता के बिना कोलकाता बंदरगाह से तलछट जमाव को बाहर निकालने के लिए गंगा से हुगली नदी में प्रति सेकंड 1,800 क्यूबिक मीटर (64,000 घन फीट/सेकेंड) पानी को मोड़ना है। परियोजना के चालू होने के बाद, यह पाया गया कि फरक्का बैराज से परिवर्तित जल प्रवाह नदी से गाद को संतोषजनक ढंग से निकालने के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं था। इसके अलावा, फरक्का बैराज के उच्च स्तर के बैक वॉटर के कारण गंगा नदी में नियमित रूप से भूमि/तट ढहते रहते हैं। पर्याप्त ऊँची भूमि पहले से ही निचले स्तर के नदी तल में परिवर्तित हो गई है जिससे बड़ी आबादी का विस्थापन हो रहा है। फरक्का बैराज से निकाला गया पानी फरक्का में उपलब्ध गंगा नदी के पानी का 10% से भी कम है।
