A really lovely piece by Peter Maxwell Davies. I think it suits being played on the lever harp, although the middle section would be a lot easier played on a concert harp.

My absolute favourite piece of contemporary piano music - sounds gorgeous on the harp too! (Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Sir Peter Maxwell Davies in person, so was able to tell him how much I loved the piece).

Wow, busy busy with the levers! Impressed you managed an “over the top reach” on one! I’m learning this so was keen to see how someone else managed with a lever harp. It’s lovely.

;-) I did just use the original piano score and adapted it to the harp. This particular harp has a smaller range than a normal harp so I think I ended up moving the whole piece up 1 (or 2 ?) octaves. You do need to do a bit of 'pruning' of the left hand in the middle section to fit in the lever changes, but there is no real reason to miss out any of the chromatic sections although they are a bit of a challenge! Have fun - the piece is well worth the work!

I like your performance of this piece more than any other RU-vid performance I have heard, although some other musicians like the LA guitar quartet have done it very well, too. Could it be reasonably well performed on a big orchestral harp? Gretchen van Hoesen is a fabulous harpist with the Pittsburgh Symphony, and I wonder how she might perform it. Have you ever met her?

Gorgeous rendition. Tough times when you have to shift tuning levers for key changes. Awesome performance. All the voices can be seen and heard. That's the nature of the harp.

It's a 27 string camac bardic harp - pretty much bottom of the camac lever harp range but it has a surprisingly good tone!

Very late answer. Standing by St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall I was struck by the large number of men from the NZEF (New Zealand Expeditionary Force) commemorated on the WW1 list on the memorial. Those names would have been the grandchildren and nephews of Islanders who had sent their kin on the long journey to the other side of the world. Their longing is in this song for all the song was a contemporary protest son about unwilling departures.

Thank you - this is lovely. Is your arrangement available? I can see from a quick look at the sheet music that it goes lower than the range of a small harp. Did you just move the left hand up an octave or is it more complicated than that?
