What really pissed me off about the River Lugg judgement was the value placed on twelve trees that were removed.I already planted enough trees and hedge to replace that and I gift them as replacement

It boiled my blood when I heard of the farmer getting fined and imprisonment for that. Feargal Sharkey (from the 80's pop group The Undertones) has, only lately, tried highlighting the problem of sewage companies contaminating our rivers and sea.

It’s always great to see the old farmers still using all the local trades for any building and other jobs, here in Holbeach where i live in the 60s-70s-80s we had a mass of small farms all around us and as they slowly got eaten up by the bigger farms it was sad to see all the other little businesses in the town close because the farmers were their main trade,i understand it is part of life moving on but still sad …

Quite agree about the prison sentence, the man did a bloody good job he should have invoiced the E A for doing their job. I’m 62 and remember when the Thames conservancy (pre EA) used to dredge our river like that regularly and there was more wildlife and more fish then than there are now, these conservation halfwits haven’t a clue about conservation, I bet the trees they claim he took out were only scrub like we have now and they’ll soon regenerate. A complete miscarriage of justice in my book brought about by urban lefties.

Good morning Andrew. This reminds me of many years ago loading seaweed off the beach at Marazion, West Cornwall ,when the tide was out, to spread on the fields nearby as a manure for our early potato and cauliflower crops. We never switched off the engines, always carried a chain and made sure we had an extra tractor available! Large quantities of seaweed were often washed up by autumnal storms.

Totally agree with You Andrew regarding John Price, the vast majority of comments I,ve seen are in his favour. Some of the reporting on this is so biased using words like devastation etc. I have yet to see one picture of what the river bank looks like now, they (the press), just won,t show it. I only live about five miles away so I,ll go and look for myself and the post some pictures. Looking at that Beach in Portugal... What would the environment agency say about that 🤣🤣🤣

So you have found the pipe with the divining wires,The farmer in Herefordshire ,the bill is 1.2 million,,he started late teens when his father passed away and built a business,which he pays taxes to keep the likes of the EA ,who dont take responsibilty when their water floods someones home/land.he has been struck off as a director for 3 years,he is being made an example of.What he has done is drop in the ocean to what HS2 is doing through ancient woodlands etc etc,but as you say ,one rule for one and another rule for everyone else

@charleswillcock3235
@charleswillcock3235 Год назад
Morning Andrew, I can understand you having a lot of sympathy for another farmer, most rivers are “man made” certainly in the lower reaches their course has been shaped. If they had not, many rivers would be much wider if the banks had not been built up. I realise RU-vid comments is not the place for a nuanced debate, but one man’s drainage can become another person’s flood. I have been fascinated by videos showing how if water is retained on the land, and grazing animals carefully managed deserts can be turned green. Allan Savory is another farmer clearly in a different climate he was born in Zimbabwe and by slowing the movement of water and animal husbandry he has helped change landscapes. I sometimes wonder in parts of the UK if we should be trying to slow the run off, of water rather than accelerate it. Allan has produced a number of RU-vid videos to showcase his ideas. I appreciate you cannot grow crops on fields which are too wet. Clearly a balance needs to be found. Your presentational style is first class - this might make an interesting topic to explore in a future episode.

@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Hi Andrew, TBH I am surprised so few people are interested in farming. If farmers stopped working as hard as they do in the UK and around the world most of us would starve to death in a few months. I know most of the UK thinks food comes from supermarkets or food banks. I appreciate your attempt to showcase how farming actually works. Supermarkets are the end of a supply chain which start with people like you risking your money investing in preparing the land, planting, fertilising, harvesting and then selling it to someone further down the supply chain. 40-years ago I did help with some hay baling on a farm. That was hard work and I was just doing a few evenings and weekends. I agree not many people are sympathetic towards farmers, and I think only seeing what farming is really like will that have any chance of changing. I started watching Rice Farming TV Matthew Sligar - he produced a weekly video for a couple of years and built up a following of 50K - then he stopped. His young family might have been the reason. Matthew did get as a consequence of his videos invited on to US Government panels to talk about issues. Please keep the videos coming you are great communicator and I think you will get more people to be sympathetic towards farmers and farming.

Hi Andrew, another great podcast . . we still follow you, but don't like/comment because we usually watch via the TV. Anyway, I totally agree with you about the outrageous response by the EA......totally uncalled for. Sadly I think that between them and Natural England we are going to see far more over-reach of farming operations, i dare say that within 10 years we will not be able to lift a shovel without first getting it signed off by them. It really is becoming like a socialist country here.....and they wonder why stress levels are up. Anyway enjoy your holiday!

Hi Andrew, You can’t help but be furious at the state of our waterways but I don’t think that excuses the actions of this farmer. He flouted the law and was given warnings about the consequences of his actions but he carried on. The word arrogant comes to mind. The prison sentence is meant as a deterrent. If deemed unfair he could no doubt appeal. I doubt you would have undertaken the same actions without permission.
@paulwilliams3494
@paulwilliams3494 Год назад
Well said Peter RE, arrogant indeed. Comments have mentioned the 'poor farmer' which is irrelevant and ill informed. The Farmers Weekly has just reported his assets were disclosed to be between £21 to £25 Million. I hope he enjoys his stay in prison and reflects on his attitude to the law and gets help with his medical condition, he did very well for himself despite it and therefore it demonstrates how much contempt he had for the law and environment.
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Год назад
His assets will be his farm which he has built up since his father died when John was 15. He’s been an incredible successful farmer through years of graft, risk taking and a sound business head. My point is water companies cause far more damage to wildlife and water and the bosses get huge pay rises! Hundreds of acres of my cousins farm near Lincoln flooded in 2019 through lack of EA maintenance, wildlife killed no compensation to my cousin for ruining crops and field drains, wildlife took 4 months to return: EA incompetence and eyes only on wildlife (which they then killed) not maintenance caused this. The EA need to be accountable but they never are.
@paulwilliams3494
@paulwilliams3494 Год назад
The judgement on Mr Lugg might not seem to be fair from certain angles but two wrongs do not make a right I was taught Andrew. I pay my subscription to the Farmers Weekly and remember reading about the incident at the time, I had some sympathy for Mr Lugg then but what was said in the report following the evidence in court tells a rather different story. There has been lots of history between Mr Lugg and the environment agency it seems. It is perhaps best to not confuse two issues that appear to be comparable but are actually quite separate. As far as I know water companies are accountable and liable to court action for breaches of laws too.
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Год назад
I don’t think they are accountable when their lack of maintenance causes huge floods and wildlife destruction such as on my cousins farm in 2019.
@paulwilliams3494
@paulwilliams3494 Год назад
@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard . It is interesting how sharing your opinions have brought out the comments on the Lugg case. I sympathise with your cousins and anyone else who has had to deal with flooding. I also commend you and your friends and colleagues at Forage Aid for which you were awarded an MBE. Given our constitution I feel politicians are fair game and need to be questioned with regard to policy and well done to those that do so. However.........how Mr Lugg accrued his money or if anyone has suffered from flooding has to be kept out of it, it is not relevant in any way. The fact the environment might recover has absolutely no relevance to the case either. There is a big difference between wanton destruction and an 'Act of God' lets call it. He blatantly disregarded the law and ignored warnings. He made an example of himself, the perfect one! Nobody forced him to do it, quite the opposite. It is a shame when people let themselves be fooled into joining in on authority bashing when most authorities try to help and use courts as a last resort. If someone is arrogant and wealthy enough then that is when it is decided in court. He took on the authorities and law and lost.
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Год назад
Apparently the EA were shocked at the severity of the sentence. Their lawyers said at worst he would get 12 month suspended. New houses, roads and rail can uproot trees and cause huge destruction to wildlife and environment yet we get the blame for wildlife decline, it really does take some dealing with. Appreciate your comments re Forage Aid, watch here for an announcement in the next month. 😊
