Thank you for the video the h is about my favorite tractor not that it’s better than others just grew up on one I like all tractors, thanks again.

Thanks Jim, for the comment and as well as for watching the videos. I am really getting to like this H even though I am really a Massey Harris fan because that’s what I grew up on. But again just like you I like all tractors.

It was fun indeed T! It had some suspense in there just like a good movie. Adjusting the 3rd brush back and forth...mystery...then a little tension...suspense...ahhh... the surprise twist at the end. LOL. Thanks for taking us along. Cheers!

Hahahaha...I'm glad you enjoyed the unintended 'suspense'...LOL. Yes, the surprise paint job was a bit of a twist huh....LOL. One of these days, I'm going to commit to actually learning how these things do the things they do. Thanks for hanging in there GP !!

Nice work. The bracket can double as an side hitch for a jib crane. I was able to install Delco one wires alternators on the 8N and Farmall B. My friend Bob Collins helped me tune a 6 volt generator to charge a 12 volt battery so I could switch my 46 Ford 3 ton with a 59AB Flathead V8 over to 12 volt.

I had an old buddy that was a superb generator and alternator man. I WISH now I'd have spent more time with him. When he passed though he gave me all his associated tools and equipment including a home made generator/alternator tester and an armature lathe with a couple dozen cutting tools for cleaning and repairing different width slots where bearing failures ruined them. I was the only one he knew that even had an interest in any of it. I figure when I get too old to work on tractors and cut wood, I'll sit by the cold fireplace and start a new love-hate interest in generators. Lord knows I have a couple shelves of them.... Side note: I hauled a rotted '53 F-350 flatbed to the junk yard a few years back. It had a 239 (I think) flathead V-8 in it with a hole in the block big as your fist. I saved all the salvageable stuff though.

@@tractorman4461 I loved my 46. Built it up from 2 junkers. One old homemade wrecker with a 10 ton PTO winch and a straight truck. It took 4 years to do the drive train and body work. When we downsized. (I hate that word) I sold it.

@@OldSneelock Yeah, I understand... I would hate to have to go through that myself. Btw, the old '53 had a 4 speed with a transmission brake as well as a pto and factory winch in the middle of the beds front. Yes, I saved all that stuff too....even the dually frame and rear end is down in the woods stacked full of iron.

@@tractorman4461 Same setup as mine. The 59AB had a later cam, crank, and rods. The old guy who built it was a mechanic and a half.

That`s a nice clean installation.... would not be better than that if it came from the company with an altenator....another one on the board,,,CHEERS

Good Morning Mon Ami... things just can't be that easy Gator. Some of the tractor parts supply companies sell different alternators with 'tailor-made' brackets for some of the more popular tractors...but they come with a hefty price tag too. Most of those are pretty flimsy. I think this one is a little beefier !! Thanks for tuning in buddy.

Thanks Ben for the compliment. After all these years I should know more about generators, and maybe one day I will learn but man the alternators are so much easier and cheaper. Generator repair shops are mostly gone from the landscape these days. There used to be a half dozen just in my little town. Zero now. I think I could have made this one work, but I did not want to buy anything and take a chance there would still be a problem. The cutout is probably the problem, but the new ones are mostly electronic and word on the street is reliability is questionable. A lazy guy always takes the easy route, you know. LOL Thanks for commenting sir.

Heck yeah Dave, its a good fit too !! Though I don't seem to find the time for 'restoration' projects, if I do in the future, I want to have the original metal intact.

Another fine job as usual, Wendell! I think you were definitely right to abandon trying to get that old generator to work. The new one wire alternator should serve the old Farmall well. Looking forward to seeing the next chapter in this story!

Hahahaha...the next chapter will be putting this lazy bones tractor back to work. It's been resting enough the last 30 years !! LOL. Well, first there's a battery tray and an electrolysis job on the gas tank.....THEN back to work. Thanks Martin, take care my Southern friend !!

At least I know its got good output, I just couldn't regulate it. That one came from either Amazon or O Reilly’s auto parts. I just don’t remember. I’ve done quite a few since then. Maybe check the description because I may have put info in there. Thanks Shane for stopping by.

@@tractorman4461 Thanks for the reply, ended up finding one on Amazon with a different model number but it cross references to the one you used. Tried using a 3 wire setup with a small alternator for late 80's Toyota's. Couldn't get it to work as it would charge but the voltage wouldn't hold steady and the ammeter would bounce around. Will try this route!

@@shanefox6255 I'm not too good with the foreign car brands of alternators as sometimes they require deeper thought than I am able to give. You'll notice in the box a 1-800 number. If you have any questions, they will give you the correct answers quick. But they verified that it was a true one wire operation when I called. So far it has worked without a problem at all. I do prefer a voltmeter though vs an ammeter for the old tractors that have no real load other than ignition and a couple lights.

@@tractorman4461 I got the one wire alternator installed today. Mine isn't reading steady voltage like the one on your video. My voltmeter is varying between around 13.5 volts and 14 volts. Have you experienced this on any you have installed? I'm using a deep cycle/marine battery I'm wondering if that is the cause? I also grounded the alternator to the negative terminal on the battery to make sure I had a good ground.

So many of the old IH tractors have had their hoods butchered to accept the much larger diameter Delco. I went on a quest to find something compatible to keep standard metal intact. It's doing fine so far and the 63 amp (I think) output far exceeds anything this tractor will ever need.

Hi their, don't have to mucn experience with tractor recently bought 1951 farmall m , my issue i bought from seller that realy didn't have any experience with tractor, 1 issue was battery would not charge? Or drain ? I noitce it has 12v car battery which i thought these tractor were 6v , i confirmed the coil is 6v & generator looks to be 6v also my question is would or could it damage the 6v coil or wiring , she told me she had a mechanic look.at it said to her it needed a new coil issue is having is staring just cranck and cranck won't start . I'm not sure if seller installed 12v before or after which had me thinking it fried the 6v coil hence it won't start which it did before appreciate your help

Whoa...there's a lot there to figure out. Its going to depend on a lot of things....a simple way to check the generator output is to read the battery voltage with the tractor not running. That will be your static voltage. If the generator is putting voltage out, the static voltage will rise to the output of the generator once the tractor is started...or it will stay very close to the static voltage. During starting however, the voltage will drop due to the high amperage draw (load) put on it by the starter motor. The output of the generator should raise the voltage across the battery to 14.6 or 14.7 volts. The regulator then regulates the amount of charge entering the battery so the battery will not be damaged, but the voltage will remain the same. There is a specific 'ohm' reading required in the primary and a different reading in the secondary circuit in the coil. The primary circuit is across the + and - terminals, the secondary circuit is across the + and the center post where the coil wire plugs in. I will have to check to give you the suggested readings because that slips memory at the moment. But the primary should probably be around 1.5 ohms to maybe 3.0 ohms. The secondary reading should probably be around 6,000 ohms. Do not hold me to that though at this time please. You also need to verify voltage at the distributor after the key is turned on to make sure there is fire getting to the points. Many times corrosion on points are the issue. However to answer your question, yes the 6v coil can be damaged by the situation you describe. But if the 6v regulator hasn't been changed to match the 12v output you could experience problems too. There is just too much to go into with a simple reply but I hope at least you have a place to start. An inexpensive digital voltmeter would be nice to have for your issue. @@MrSehka77 Well, like I said...there's a lot that can be easily corrected in person, but describing the process in print is very difficult. I usually don't get into repairing old generators and voltage regulators. If I was a 'restorer' I would, but I use my tractors daily so almost always convert to the simple alternator, eliminating the other components. Good luck to you MrSehka with your tractor.

How's she goin'? What a great find that little alternator was. Fit in there pretty good. I was surprised that you painted it. I thought you would have gone with the rust patina that you like so much!!! That was an interesting experiment you tried with the generator too. When you were describing what you were going to do I thought for sure you would have less voltage because the 3rd brush would have been picking off on a fewer number of windings. So I'm was like you on that one, no smarter now than I was 5 minutes ago!!! LOL Thanks for posting and take care!!!

Well Mike, might I say that sometimes I may tend to stroll off the path occasionally.... About the generator, I don't know what output is effected by moving the brush, voltage or amperage. If I was more into actual 'restoration' I would dig into some research so I wouldn't look like so much of a dummy. But my focus now is function.... Because there's a lot of work waiting for this old thing. I guess I could have hooked up a near dead battery to give a big load and hook up an ammeter to see what was happening to the output amperage. Then move the third brush and do it again. Maybe next time. Thanks for taking a looksee buddy.

Ive got at least one of every letter series Farmalls that they made. Ive converted some of the to 12 volts using a GM alternator. I T into a oil pressure line and install a pressure switch and wire that to energize the alternator. Many of my tractors I dont use enough to fool with a battery and starter. I install a mag and hand crank them. I once installed a Fairbanks Morse mag from a Allis Chalmers on a H. one spot it ran behind itself. advance the plug wires and it was advanced too far but ran good. I was cranking it and it kicked back and fractured my forearm. That hurt pretty bad. I then removed the housing and moved the teeth on the timing gear and got it installed correctly.

Now THAT's an option I didn't think of for external excitation of the GM three wire. I've not converted one to a mag, but my brother has on several. I think there's a specific correlation to number of degrees per tooth on the mag. I'm thinking divide 360 by the number of teeth on the mag drive and that'll give you an idea of how much advance or retard its being moved..... Does that sound logical ? Kickback...eh..?? Been there done that...hahahahaha. I do have a problem with a mag right now on an Allis Motor Patrol but I just think its corrosion on the points. No spark for the first time ever but it's been sitting now for a number of years. I have a running H for sale right now....running on a temporary tank, the gas tank is off and needs electrolysis and sealant. Thanks Randall for the input...oh and I have a '37 IH stationary baler with a bad water cooled throttle governed engine.

Good Morning Mike. Carhartt is my all time favorite for durability....but the lining is a major thing to look at considering the stuff I do around here. Like...NEVER wear a polyester lined vest or a quilt lined vest while welding and especially welding overhead. That is unless you enjoy smoldering, smoking and sometimes flaming situations on your belly and chest. LOL Kinda like stick welding in tennis shoes....even steel toed tennies are a no-no. Grinding with the angle grinders set your belly on fire easily too. Man...I could go on as I usually do....but this time I won't..LOL Maybe. My arms get real hot real quick, I have to unbutton my shirtsleeves a lot of the time, even in chilly weather. That's why vests are so much standard wear for me. Spring and Fall I like vests that stop the zipper pretty low, but severe weather I prefer protecting my neck from the cold air as well as the back of my neck by wearing full zippered vests, heavily insulated. It seems to minimize the onset of colds and sore throats for me. With the new OSHA regulations concerning 'Arc Flash' protections in worker wear there have been major advances in flame retardent clothing and that's what the Missus has been ordering for myself and my son that helps me on welding projects. But the lure to and the liking of vests I believe is eternally connected to all the '50's and '60's Westerns I devoured weekly...just like millions of youngsters. All the cowboys wore vests and treated the ladies with respect, tipping their hats and opening doors....all the good stuff... things I like to do to this day, well...except for shooting the bad guys !! Thank you sir for the fun question and I hope the 'brief' answer is adequate. Please have a wonderful day. On a side note....I still have a pristine set of six shooters I got in the 4th or 5th grade. They have the fancy holsters and bullets all the way around....even have pearl handles !! Well, they're fake and the bullets are plastic...LOL ...and no, I don't wear them any more. )-:

Welded for 22 years but lucked out not havin to do overhead.mostly light gage aluminum. Welded thousands of light boxes that light up the parkin lots of Wally world and McDonald's. Love a good old western myself. Did you know Roy Rogers loved old harly Davidsons?

Hey Tractorman44 Just ordered one of those alternators for my 1957 Farmall 350. I've had the machine for over 20 years but just never fooled with getting the original dead generator repaired. That said, what gauge wire did you run from the alt to battery?

I usually run #10 on all the old tractors that don’t really have any implements that require high amperage. I usually don’t even run any lights. I’ve had great luck with all the conversions so far. And there has been a lot. Good luck with yours Mike. I really like using a 12 volt voltmeter too. Let’s you see at a glance what’s happening. Soon as it excites you’ll see the voltage jump above 14.

It'll fill in for the Massey's in the event of a breakdown....which is why the first job will be on the pto powered woodsplitter. The little Massey Harris 30 that usually works that machine has sprung a leak in the top tank of the radiator. It's usable but you gotta keep an eye on it and leave the radiator cap loose. It needs a drink every hour or two. I'll use it on the trailers shuttling split wood to the house and shed as well. Probably skid a log or two too.

Do they make generators for humans? I think I could use a charge now and again some mornings, afternoons or evenings! I wonder if my original bracket will fit? I'll have to check with my doctor I recon. Anyway, it's time for another cuppaJO tilted your way and now, on to my 44 catch up! DaveyJO
