At a time in this world when the "old guys" are retiring or well...you know...nice to see someone teaching younger folks about fixing stuff. As a early 40s mechanic myself...it's great to see not only young people like Rachel here getting the work done, but women getting into the trade, need more of this type of encouragement.
Total Knowledge extreme communication skills, not afraid to get dirty and endless beauty. I rate these videos on a 1 to 10 scale at a 20.these are the best how to I have ever seen
Thanks again - I followed your disassembly and replaced the Bendix drive in my starter and instead of making an awful noise and not engaging it works as it should. The horrible noise is gone and the Bendix engages all the time now. I also saw another video from someone else that used blocks of wood to pry the brushes back for assembly on top of a large soup/stew can :) worked like a charm ! Thanks again !
I came looking for some nostalgia about the fabulous Ferguson 30 and 35,,, which models were So common on NZ farms in the 50s and 60s...still plenty of them around doing humble towing work. Here in Masterton we have John Deere, Deutz-Fahr, Kubota and New Holland-- all clustered in friendly competition just 4 Km from here, in this sheep farming, wine-producing region. An aside... a few months ago one 15 yr old girl i was tutoring said she wants to be a mechanic.. runs in her family... looking at her in her tall blonde elegance I said teasingly, "You can't--you'll break a nail." But good on her if she turns out anything like Rachel.
I just would like to say Very impressive, and So informative....Makes me want to go find an old tractor to rebuild , Good work and I will definitely keep your website in mind
Always great videos. Gives me confidence in repairs. For future reference, the contact area on the armature is a commutator not a commentator and the half moon key is a woodruff key.
Awesome video thank you very much for being there I would very much appreciate all the information I can get about your business we are trying to start a business here and conneaut Ohio buying and selling tractors and need a good place to go for information and parts so thank you very much for this video it was awesome great job dad
This appears to be the same starter as on my AC D14. I am going to "best effort" go through this repair procedure on that starter this coming weekend. Never done this type repair before. Wish me luck.
@@rogercarrico4975 maybe one of the best earlier gas tractors? there was stuff that came later that could be considered better...... 766,966,1066,1466 anyone? also the MTA has the advantage of a torque amplifier over the original M
we have a 706 frame all tractor diesel it's about a 60 model i drive thru the field stopped and shutting it off and trying to starting it back up and it didn't start we had the battery check out and thay where good and wires to where good. i used a screwdriver to jump it it was dragging a little bit after a few times it was it
Hi Rachel. I inherited my Dad's 1947 Farmall M. The battery is a 6 volt and no longer holds a charge. If I use a 12 volt battery to start the tractor can I just go with negative ground or does the starter need to be wired differently?
do you own the farm tractor repair part store? if so were is in, in Canada or usa, problem if it is in usa it not worth ordering as shipping to Canada is all way really high andcan get them in Canada for much less, if you look around, sure there are a few places in the usa i have to order parts from as not avalable localy but they are good on shipping costs, but they cant help on the duty into Canada, but they want my business so they cover a good part of the shipping, or they are fair on real shipping cost and dont inflate it like so many do by adding in handeling fees, and other fees and giving you one total cost, as i ship to the usa and i never come up with high costs to my customer like i end up with frommany usa mfg
Hi John, If you are electrically inclined, it wouldn't be difficult. There are many ways to go about a conversion. You can search here on RU-vid for a video I did for Steiner Tractor Parts on a Farmall H 12 volt conversion. The step-by-step tutorial should make the job very easy for you. --Rachel
Im 70, have VERY limited mechanic skills, no shop, and it just galls me that a young beautiful slip of a girl can show/do something I STILL wont do. IF I had a shop, and had the puter out there where I could watch her do her thing bit by bit, id be good to go, But otherwise, nope. Starters bad on my 48 H. Took it to my mechanic who has a 300, and said he had worked on his starter before. He said hed have it in 2 days. He didn't. After 4 days went and got it $40. Brought it home, installed it. Didn't work. Hooked it on to jumper cables and to the pk. Didn't start. Ill be calling him on Monday.
I need your help please! I have A John Deere 2640 Diesel 4cylinder 1978 . I need a Ar65444 fuel gauge. I need ohms specs empty to full for me to go to automotive store to get close ohms to for sender ohm match readings.
rachel. please tie your hair back. its a great habit to get into fro people with long hair . id hate to see your hair tangled in a rotating part. ps love your work
Another consideration as well that a lot of people sometimes overlook is yes a battery has a 12v charge but has a bad cell. For those that don't know a 12 volt battery has 6 cells (6 volt has 3 cells). Its common (particularly on older 12 volt batteries) to have a cell go bad and a owner charge the battery, stick a voltmeter on it, see 12ish volts, and say it's good. Basically the other cells are overcharged (on 12 volt battery each cell would only have to be .4 volts or so overcharged) making up for the dead cell voltage wise. What wouldn't be made up for is the lack of amperage. On a 600 CCA battery you're losing 100 CCAs of the battery. That's 17 percent of your cranking power. Really need to use a load tester on batteries to test them the right way particularly if they are older.
I agree with you, but she made it easy on the beginner without overloading them with T M I. That would be a good idea for her to have another troubleshooting video. I like my cheep Harbor Freight load tester. It has never failed on me.
This is the best video production hands down. The clarity and the super professional speaking manor Miss Rachel uses is outstanding. I am blown away that she never seems to make a verbal mistake. PERFECT!
This is really what I needed, I am starting out with zero knowledge on a B that we haven't started in 2 years. Thank you so much, I wish I had wifi in my shed!
First, great instructional video! It may be called something different where you're from, but I learned the parts of an electric motor as: rotor, stator, commutator, and brushes. Btw, if you're replacing the 'fields' you should see if the new fields have been properly matched. Use your ohmmeter to test in microohm range. Both should be very similar readings, ideally within 10% of each other. Love the video.
I always like to keep the original component with the tractor when ever possible. The Mom and Pop starter and alternator shops that are willing to work on these. Are getting more and more scarce. This certainly shows how with a little time and few parts an original starter can be saved. You are a talented teacher/speaker. I espically thought the explanation how to orient the brushes in their holders was superb! Thanks, Gingells
There really isnt an exact specification for resistance in the field. Basically what you are looking for is a low number. If you have numbers above 100 ohms, you most likely have some wear. If it is an extremely large number or O.L. it's best to replace.
Very informative! So my starter spins strong but not engaging flywheel. when tested on a battery after removing it wont extend to engage the flywheel. Suggestions? Very clean inside teeth looks mint.
Years ago a tractor my buddy had would not start regardless of anything done. I turned out some one had actually charged a 12v battery backwards! Seriously .. If you take a stone dead battery and hook up charger backwards it charges opposite. I found it using a multimeter . Test light could not determine this. Crazy huh?
what a kool dad....i have a 1953 farmall super H....I finally found the owners manual....still learning how to use a voltmeter...you make everything seem easy...and thank you....one day I might be ordering parts from you guys...my father is from the upper penisula woods....he can build anything and work on everything...he is still a live he had cross cut at one time...thank you for the youtube .
Young lady you are some else. I had a Farmall 1941 when I was farming. Presently retired, I just can’t believe how knowledgeable you are, and I like watching you and the Farmall repair.
Outstanding video! I have always been intimidated by starters, but after watching this, I’m pretty confident in tackling that shelf full of various Allis starters in my shop! Time to order some parts!
