Why do we hunt coyotes?
Coyotes are presently the most abundant livestock predators in western North America, causing the majority of sheep, goat, and cattle losses. For example, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of the 224,000 sheep deaths attributed to predation in 2004.The total number of sheep deaths in 2004 comprised 2.22% of the total sheep and lamb population in the United States, which, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA report, totaled 4.66 million and 7.80 million heads respectively as of July 1, 2005. Because coyote populations are typically many times greater and more widely distributed than those of wolves, coyotes cause more overall predation losses. The United States government agents routinely shoot, poison, trap, and kill about 90,000 coyotes each year to protect livestock.
Coyotes typically bite the throat just behind the jaw and below the ear when attacking adult sheep or goats, with death commonly resulting from suffocation. Blood loss is usually a secondary cause of death. Calves and heavily fleeced sheep are killed by attacking the flanks or hindquarters, causing shock and blood loss. When attacking smaller prey, such as young lambs, the kill is made by biting the skull and spinal regions, causing massive tissue and bone damage. Small or young prey may be completely carried off, leaving only blood as evidence of a kill.
In the absence of the harassment of coyotes practiced by rural people, urban coyotes are losing their fear of humans, which is further worsened by people intentionally or unintentionally feeding coyotes. In such situations, some coyotes have begun to act aggressively toward humans, chasing joggers and bicyclists, confronting people walking their dogs, and stalking small children. Non-rabid coyotes in these areas sometimes target small children, mostly under the age of 10, though some adults have been bitten.

I read a book one time back in the early to mid eighties I’m guessing, anyway the title was Calling Coyotes and other Predators by Rick Jameson. If I recall correctly, I know it’s only been nearly 40 years and I only read it once, a coyote could hear a noise from a range of one mile and have the noise pinpoint to within three feet. At 100 yards I think it said the coyote had it narrowed down to 6 inches! Now I might be off by a little on those distances but I’m pretty sure it’s very close!

Many years ago when I lived in Canada I had a house in a rural area which backed on to a farm. The farmhouse was about 500 m away. The farmer raised cattle. In the same field he had a donkey and a mule. They were quite effective against coyotes. Even so, I often heard coyotes coming out of the forest near my home. I would phone the farmer, even in the middle of the night, to tell him there were coyotes on the prowl. Shortly after there would be bang-bang from the farm.

As a farm hand who has had to do this you guys have a damn good set up. I just hope you guys skinned them for the pelts. if i said the next part it may offend a whole bunch of people.... but i do not mind... skid loader dig trench after skinning the pelts thrown them in it and pour diesel on what is left. leave it open 3 days let possum, vultures clean it up and bury it. to those who may be offended when they are killing one cow a farmer is losing about 800 if not more per cow and if pregnant the price goes up much higher. coyote's are notorious for praying on pregnant cattle or injured cattle. it is just like a soldier at war no one wants to do it but, in a situation of limited choices have to do what you have to. conservation even says it flat out they have to be thinned out to prevent disease, food shortage. a varmint is no different than a fly to me. groundhogs started taking over here in central, mo i started removing them. it put holes in my barn i about broke my legs, stole chicken eggs and if it breaks one my horses legs all bad. raccoons i had major problem with so instead fighting them i just built a 8x15 run with wire mash, tin roof and bags concrete to stop and prevent undermining. to those who it offends no rancher can build no damn concrete fence. t posts are 5-8 bucks each, barb wire, steel fence rolls vary like horse fence talking 200.00 to 350.00 per roll. when i raise an animal feed it grain, give it shots i damn sure am not going to be happy to lose thousands of dollars. thus the damn reason there is coyoto season here in missouri, raccon season, deer season, turkey ect. groundhogs, raccoons, coyotos, bobcats, black vultures, foreal hogs, musk rats, minks, foxes are trash that is destructive to any active farm. they can pump out multiply litters per year so if anyone does not get that read conservation books, study science. around here in rural central missouri cars and trucks run over more animals than i ever shot for fact. those who do not live the ranch, farm life should never speak on it unless they live it and know of it. my perception, my thoughts this aint no damn conversation or argument. much love and good job being a good shepherd to yur herd. without them its hard and without you its hard on the heard. our farm animals are never killed we give them the best life possible and harvesting is never esy it is just part of the order. people who eat meat without farmers, ranchers, truckers, grain stores, butchers, slaughter houses without them would be no pretty package on a walmart shelf. i treat everyone who farms, ranchers with the up most respect as if they are my family because we have same lifestyle, values and do same work. noone does this for no reason it is part of a shepherds job even david in the bible carried a wrist sling shot to protect his herd. my values offend them and it is not to offend maybe just sure my experiande and knowledge. i practice good conservation, farmer methods... nature does not need me i need it and all i do is give it a hand. sorry this is so long some comments i seen offended me because they are ignorant non needed misunderstood idiots of the nature they speak no volume is in them. just goofy as weirdos, trolls with no ability to see outside the box, much love keep being great shepherds and god bless

At first I felt bad, but then I thought about me taking my dog out at night. If a pack of coyotes spotted us they wouldn't hesitate to attack. Anyone who honestly believes this is the wrong way to go about protecting cattle, has virtually zero grip on reality.

Plus they multiply quickly according to the comments. Apparently this is just a small portion of the total population in that area

@yo yo if they are in a pack they will not run. Most wolves will also run from humans if they are not in a pack.

The reality is, why walk around at night with your dog when coyotes are in the area possibly. The cattle are already dead, and he is just shooting those coyotes like flies for not doing anything-poor ownership. If you treat your livestock highly, then develop better fences or put them in a stall barn.

@@TheRealBeardedFetus they have never had their little 4 year old sister dragged off and torn apart by coyotes. The closest they've come to these creatures is on their TV screens. I don't blame them.
