Farming Britain #4 - Lamb attacks pushing farmers to the edge

We look at two issues affecting sheep farmers in different parts of the country: dog attacks and sea eagle attacks on lambs.
Dog attacks are among of the most-reported rural crimes in the country, according to the National Sheep Association. Tobin Bird, a sheep farmer turned dog trainer, shows how to sheep-proof your dog. He has first hand experience of anti-social dog owners, who have no understanding of how deadly an out of control dog can be.
Then we head north to speak to the farmers and crofters on the west coast of Scotland. They have been trying to convince the authorities for years that sea eagles, reintroduced into Scotland 40 years ago, kill lambs to feed their chicks. David Colthart has been particularly vocal as he says he's losing about 200 lambs a year to this apex predator.This is having a significant impact on his business, but also the future of his flock. Over the generations these sheep have learned how to find food and shelter in this tough terrain. If that "knowledge" is not passed down the generations there is no farm. We also see the 'angry man' in action, which is supposed to scare the birds away. This orange inflatable doesn't look like it is up to the job.
Charlotte Ashley presents the show, David Wright has the news and James Marchington delivers Farming RU-vid.

NatureScot statement
“NatureScot and the Scottish Government recognise that white-tailed eagles can cause economic impacts to farms and crofts in some locations. We are committed to continuing to run the Sea Eagle Management Scheme (SEMS) this year to provide support to farmers and crofters affected by predation and we are currently finalising the details.”
Background
The Sea Eagle Management Scheme (SEMS) extends support for livestock farmers and crofters who experience sea eagle predation impacts.
To support farmers and crofters, scheme advisers will:
investigate what sea eagle activity is occurring near to the farm
advise on measures to mitigate against sea eagle impacts
arrange to lend equipment, where appropriate, to use to deter sea eagles or otherwise mitigate impacts
recommend support for longer-term management agreed with and carried out by the livestock manager
The current scheme is not compensatory, as confirming specific damage, the exact cause and the scale of that damage is difficult to do.
More information on the support provided by the scheme is available on the NatureScot website: www.nature.scot/professional-...

The biggest problem is city and government types running the countryside. Farming has made the countryside what it is and farmers try to manage it with everyone telling them how. Farming is one of the biggest cost outlays to produce a product that they cannot dictate the price of what they sell. They also work more hours than most other job types. Big support to all in the farming industry.
@reyndor1583
@reyndor1583 Месяц назад
I'm honestly asking because I don't know. How many hours do farmers work? I can see having to put in long days at times, you have to make hay when the weather's good and all that. But, during the off season how many hours does it take?
@iannorthover1397
@iannorthover1397 Месяц назад
Depending on the type of farming but its not unusual to do 5am to 10pm longer when weather is good . 10 to 12 hours is common when its quieter

@@reyndor1583I don't know about the UK, but in the USA there is no "off season" for most farmers and ranchers even in snowy frigid winters and blazing hot summers. 12-14 hour work days are about average year round.

Maremma livestock guardian dogs could be put with the flock, we have 2 that guard well against ravens, we had a problem with them and foxes before the dogs, they won’t tolerate any birds around the ewes. They’ll lay up close to anything lambing and even work nose to nose with the ewe sometimes helping to lick the lambs clean. Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I knew a London-based lawyer who used to let his dog off the lead when he visited his second house in northern Wales. The farmer saw it chasing his sheep, and warned him that he would shoot it if he saw that happening during lambing season. Well the lawyer clearly ignored his warning, and the dog ended up getting shot. Last I heard, the lawyer was suing the farmer.

Maremmas have been saving farms in Australia that almost were lost to feral dogs. Watching a Maremma pack work together to protect sheep is amazing, they send some pack members out to negate the threat and while others stay with the flock. Farmers ought to be aware by now that they too, and our food, are under attack, but from a far worse predator. Our ruling class have signed over governance of our homelands to supranational governing bodies, such as the United Nations and World Economic Forum. Simply do a Web search using the words restoration or rewilding & United Nations. If we don't start waking up to this crime, we will lose much of our farmland. They tried it in Holland and Germany and they pushed back, our farmers need to do the same and we need to support them.

Richard vobes and Michael o bernicia did a video showing That you can complete an AP 1 form from the land registry and change the jurisdiction from the council back to the farmer or householder or trust. Then you could setup a PMA (private members association ) just like the private members clubs in London or the old working men's clubs where they have a separate set of rules. So these separate set of rules are private and are similar but not exactly like DEFRAs or the Councils or the govts rules. These are all corporations and Setup to provide profit for their shareholders. Large estates are private and are not registered with the land registry. Then one doesn't have to abide by their rules and regulations incl council tax, vat, tax, DEFRA, ETC. Then you are private. sod these NGOs. 😆

Idk - when we were young (I'm mid-50s now!) we used to have loads of public information films on the telly - and, although as Young Farmers, we all used to laugh at them, they did used to show people how to behave in different ways, including walking across the land - such basic things such as shutting gates and keeping dogs on leads. It also did things in towns too - crossing the street and litter and stuff too. Part of me wonders if the sea eagles would be put off by a livestock guardian breed dog - I know that the crows and ravens are kept away here by my Caucasian shepherd just barking when they fly over - and he's not even out with the animals all the time. The eagles are beautiful for sure, but they are going to suffer in time when sheep aren't away out on the fields anyway and they can't sustain their numbers on the loss of the lambs.

Problem is it's a very different type of farming in these areas. Scotland has large areas of poor quality grazing so sheep are very spread out rather than in one flock which could be protected by a dog. (Think many hectares/ewe rather than ewes/hectare.) I'm sure they would work in fields or the other systems you mention globally but unfortunately not on hefted sheep on open hill

They are all in need of livestock guardian dogs. We use them here in Australia and we've had 98% reduction in predation loses raising organic free range ducks, hens, sheep and turkeys in 80 acre paddocks. The trained dogs can be bought for around $40k each (around 20k pounds), or you can buy one trained pregnant guardian bitch for about $60k-$70k AUD, and she'll give birth to her pups in the brooder cages and train an average litter of 9-14 pups! They are excellent! Maremmas, Kangals etc are the best breeds for this.

Apex predators are absolutely key species and any healthy eco system needs them. People`s Dogs on the other hand, that's another issue and needs coming down hard on. Every dog owner should be able to control their animal and if they fail to do so resulting in livestock harrying, injury or death the consequences should be swift and harsh.

Only real option I see is netting. Not doable over too large or hilly of areas, but I would try to do is link cattle fence trellis together or chain link with support beams (rope net might not be strong enough & could harm sea eagles if tangled in them) and totally enclose an entire field solely dedicated to lambing moms till the babies are big enough to not be snatched up be the sea eagles. Won't be cheap or easy, especially a large enough areas to protect 100+ pregnant moms. This should be at least partial off set cost wise by those who reintroduce this predator into the enviroment.

In every other part of the World, aside from Britain and other English-speaking nations, they pen their sheep at night and have shepherds with them constantly, during the day. This is how they minimise sheep losses elsewhere on the planet. The shepherds have projectile firing devices and shoot eagles, foxes, dogs, wolves etc and the eagles and other predators soon leave to leave the sheep alone. This is also how they used to do sheep farming in Scotland, in previous centuries.

Maybe it's time to reduce sheep farming. Stop all subsidies and start taxing.

Obviously, there is something mentally wrong with those sheep. They are not behaving like animals, but like paralysed puppets. They must have done something wrong during the breeding

The farmers need to make more effort to adapt rather than sit there and think poor me. We’re putting the world back together and they don’t like it. Get a livestock guardian dog, if you’re not going to change your practices. Stop blaming an initiative that’s repairing the damage farming and its high end toft countryside terrorists have destroyed, through ‘management’

So I come and live in your house with you, I cause a right nuisance, then I tell you to just Adapt and work around me being there?

The eagles were shot before and it will happen again because they are not suited to the world that we live in today nor are grizzly bears or wolves.

Go eat bugs in your 15 m1nute pr1son pod. Farmers may not be the most approachable but they're the last line between what remains of real f00d and insect/bug/art1ficial food grown in labs. You've no idea.

@@JM-nd4ktnot suited to the world we live in today? Tf you on about? Wolves and bears, fair but eagles? WTE’s live in areas much more densely populated than the highlands, some live in the middle of villages in Europe. The only reason they went extinct to begin with was from persecution by gamekeepers to protect the interests of the upperclass for shooting pheasant and other introduced game species. Lambs make up a tiny portion of their diet in the UK, in fact numerous studies have proven that the vast majority of lambs that are taken are stillborn. Farmers come across a half eaten lamb and then immediately assume it was the eagle that killed it not considering that it could have just as easily been taken as carrion, especially if lambing is done out in the field where there is less control

Band together and take the scheme to court and sue them plus the government who supports them.

The government should be compensating the farmers for each and every loss. They what or permit the calling of the eagles? And other birds No farmers, no future for anyone and also no food. And conservationist need to be my accountable
