The thing about this show that's pure magic is that you'll soon stop seeing the aliens as puppets. They'll be no different than an actor in makeup. The acting is that good. When you laugh or cry over something a puppet alien does, you'll be completely hooked.
@@I.Lostalim I couldn't agree more- and once she meets a particular man in black, I think she'll agree that Farscape ranks right up there with Trek and Wars and BSG at top tier sci Fi.
@@jacobdeweil3553 Yeah- he's Farscape Gul Dukat character- someone with selfish (and not so selfish) ambitions that you live to hate and who's performance is always amazing.
One thing that shows Crichton's character is he blurted out "what is wrong with you people" not something along the lines of "what are you." He doesn't judge by looks or someone being non-human.
And after this show ended, Ben Browder and Claudia Black moved over to Stargate SG-1 to continue jumping across the universe with wormholes! SG-1 even parodied Farscape in their 200th episode purely for fan service.
It was more so Ben Browder and Claudia Black had 6 year contracts for the show, but since the show was cancelled after the 4th Season Scyfy Channel had to honor their contracts for the following 2 years. SG-1 was meant to end after the 8th Season but they continued it for 2 more seasons specifically for Ben Browder and Claudia Black.
Frelling Yotz!! I've missed this show! Fun fact: Commander Crais is also the voice of Pilot. Never fear, there are emotions. LOTS of emotions. You'll laugh, you'll cry. It'll be a good ride.
One aspect of Farscape that I love (and is safe to say this early) is that it loves scifi tropes, but it loves them more when they're on their head and spun until they're dizzy. Oh, your show has a beautiful, orchestral theme song? We're going to make ours a weird, primal chorus of grunts and wails. Humans have an earned their rightful place in space travel? Well, our boy Crichton is pretty confused all the time and way out of his element. He's able to contribute, though. Your main characters work as a team to solve their problems? Our crew hates and mistrusts each other and is barely able to run away from their problems. And so on and so forth. I love this show. It seeps into your bones.
That was something I noticed on rewatch. The 1st season is practically speedrunning all the standard Sci-fi tropes, because they aren't what the show is actually about. They are just easy situations to put the cast through to figure out the characters. And starting in season 2, it's not the wacky situations that drive things forward, it's the wacky characters that start really driving things up to 11. And then S3....well, John just embraces the madness just a little too enthusiastically & suddenly the fish out of water is riding a bicycle & flipping the bird at the sharks circling him.
The thing to know about this series is that it was a big inspiration for James Gunn when he made Guardians of the Galaxy, to the point Ben Brower, the main hero Criton, is in Guardians 2 as a minor villain (he is the Sovreign's second in command) And like Guardians of the Galaxy, you will both laugh hysterically and sob as this show goes on
Claudia Black was also in 'Pitch Black,' and has done a bunch of video game voice work (particularly in the Uncharted series). She was also in 'The Nevers.' And of course the later seasons of Stargate SG-1 as Vala Mal Doran.
38:24 Angela: i don't know if there's depth or emotions.... Me: Oh boy 🙃 Enjoy the ride, it's an old show and can seem familiar but i can comfortably say that there's some stuff in it you never seen, anywhere, ever. I would give anything to watch Fasrcape for the first time again😢
Well on the bright side watching along with Angela will kind of be like watching it for the first time. Because we’ll get to see it through her reactions.
I absolutely loved Ben Browder and Claudia Black back in the day in Farscape, and years later had my mind blown to smithereens when Stargate SG-1 hired them both for the later seasons of SG-1 where they continued to be some of the best actors ever in SciFi or any genre. So happy you're watching the show, hope you enjoy it :)
To give an idea of scale: the moon is 1.3 light seconds away, the sun 8.3 light minutes, pluto 5.3 light hours, the nearest star 4.3 light years. Our galaxy is 100,000 light years across, the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy is 2.5 million light years away and much bigger.
And later, Babylon 5! I'm looking forward to that just as much as this Farscape watch. Both shows had slow starts, but ramped up fast and have *all* the emotions. There are only two kinds of people in this world, those who have actually seen "Sleeping in Light", and those who *don't* instantly tear up at those three words.
@@zippomage I completely understand. When I run into those issues, I remind myself that the show is more than 25 years old. And I decide to Love for the show it is. 😃
Farscape starts out kind of formula and tame, but by the end of the 1st season once they figure out who the characters are and the stories they want to tell it becomes pure awesomeness.
Because they used the formula to explore the characters, it was ' we have these wacky characters, & we know what Kirk or Picard would do in this situation, what about Crichton? Kirk would fight, Picard would negotiate, will Crichton try evasion, deception, or will he simply strap a nuke to his @ss dare someone to shoot him?'
@@MandoWookie Crichton is basically John McClane meets Dr. Peter Venkman meets a younger version of Hannibal Smith. He's WAY out of his element, but he's smart enough to get out of a dire situation with a tad of snarkiness.
Farscape is a legendary show. It only ran four seasons but it is a phenomenal and beautiful story. It's also one of the tightest and most comprehensive storytelling I've seen in a TV show. Even to this day I will always recommend it to people and I still watch it with newcomers that I can introduce it to.
Welcome to the bizarre, wacky world of Farscape Angela. As an Australian I have a special place in my heart for this show given it's one of ours and it's full of Aussies and Kiwis.
The first season is good, but the three-part episode "Liars, Guns, and Money" toward the end of season two is peak Farscape. One of my favorite sci-fi shows of all time--it's just so weird and different. I actually got to hang out with the cast at a party back at the end of season three, and interviewed Ben Browder, Claudia Black, Anthony Simcoe, and Gigi Edgley for a magazine that I worked for at the time. They all seemed really nice.
Here is something that isn't apparent. Lani Tupu, the actor who plays Captain Craise (Evil Goatee guy) plays two parts in this show as he is also a part of the regular crew. He is the voice of Pilot.
@@funnylilgalreacts Yeah, Crais is kind of a dick, but I'm sure this is not the last we see of him. Also, this show has a few cameos, and returning actors and actresses playing different parts. Browder's own wife has three or four guest starring roles in ALL the different makeups. Farscape has something that is sadly lacking in many other sci fi shows. It's hard to put your finger on exactly what it is, as many people argue, but all of the fans agree that it is somehow more fulfilling and enjoyable than the vast majority of other sci fi tv shows. Obligatory: Firefly is an exception that also fills this need. If you ask fans to choose between the two, you will start a war. Don't do it.
I know the golden rule is ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ but, unfortunately, you just have to accept that D’Argo is a great warrior without seeing any proof of it. The prosthetics for D’Argo were constantly being worked on and improved throughout season one but, at this early stage of production, Anthony Simcoe could barely turn his head while wearing the costume, much less fight in it. (That’s why he has to spin his whole body around to face people.) So, for now, just give D’Argo the benefit of the doubt. 😉
Actor Anthony Simcoe, who played D'Argo, is from Australia or New Zealand. {This show was filmed in in Australia.} To my ears, during this entire series, the American accent he used NEVER broke...👍
My dad and I used to watch this when I was young. I also received the Bluray special edition for Christmas. It's one of my all-time favorite shows. I'm glad you're checking it out.
I'm so glad you are reacting to Farscape! It doesn't show up on reaction channels nearly as often as shows like BSG or Firefly, but it definitely should.
I got into Farscape because it was one of the first sci-fi shows to come out on the new format of "DVDs" in the UK. Hooked from the get-go. Convinced many people to watch it over the years and it's a real shame it isn't as popular as other shows, everyone who watches it loves it. You're in for a wild wild ride. Only Firefly comes close for taking you through the same emotional range as a single episode of Farscape can.
Oh I just thought of a Battlestar Galactica connection - Kent McCord, the actor playing John’s father played Capt Troy. A colonial warrior in the Galactica 1980 series.
Captain Troy was the original shows Boxey all grown up, There was a sizeable continuity time jump between OG battlestar and Galatica 1980.. there's some things i liked about the 1980 show. But even as a kid myself back then it was far out weighed by the terrible lol.. Wish the studio hadn't massacred the production and just let it continue developing.. 😢😭
I first watched Farscape years ago, in my early to mid-twenties, if I remember correctly. I instantly fell in love with it; and when I was only a few episodes into watching the first season, I bought the entire series on DVD boxset. No regrets. 😁 I haven’t rewatched the series in a little while now, but it’s one of those shows that just sticks with you, in the best way. 💕 I very much look forward to reliving the experience of it with you. 😊
Farscape is cooky and weird in the best way ever. Claudia and Ben reunite after this on Stargate SG1 but in the later seasons, but its also a great series. Also the actor is Ben Browder, he was in Guardians of the galaxy as one of the Gold ppl, can't remember their name.
"It's not Bear McCrary...." yeah, spatial choir and synth pads were the thing in the 90's. it's like, if you couldn't afford the London orchestra, or the Boston orchestra, all that was left was GarageBand.
Farscape had a unique form of anarchy on set. If anyone had a good idea, from the top writers, actors, and even the caterers, it was used in the show. Ben Browder was also in an episode of Doctor Who. Matt Smith era.
Yeah Farscape! Claudia has done a lot of voice work, dubbing anime among other things, Virginia Hey was a Bond girl (The Living Daylights) and was in Mad Max 2 - The rest of the cast is mostly known for their work in Australia - which is where they made Farscape. For what you see on the screen, this show was done on the very cheap, they got a lot out of their money too. Occassionally you'll see them reuse effect shots and makeup... They were very good at making the best show they could for as cheap as they could
One of the tricks they did was make the Leviathan corridors and rooms so they could be easily refurbished for completely new scenery. This might sound like something standard, but in most cases of this (like Trek) the corridors have sections removed for the cameras to move in - not so on Farscape (it's why the rooms and tunnels on Moya are so big). They literally just moved stuff around.
One of the names in this that interests me is the creator/executive producer Rockne S. O'Bannon. His sci fi stuff always has interesting aliens, but his schtick is not evil aliens we have to fight (so human motives are never in question--we are always justified in what we do), but a group of very different aliens who have to work together towards a common goal. Competing motives are always important for him, and sometimes we can come off not so well and aliens can appear more sympathetic. His stuff is about negotiating difference and finding what we have in common. It makes for more complex and interesting plots, better stories.
I love this shownso much. For me, the newness and weirdness never wear off, and it always has elements of "crazy fever dream" in the best ways possible.
After Farscape ended, Ben Browder and Claudia Black both moved over to Stargate SG1. Stargate series are another set of series you would probably love. Claudia Black was in Pitch Black and Queen of the Damned. She also does a lot of game voiceover work. She has a pretty good resume on IMDB.
I loved the fact that this series had plenty of humor while exploring a wonderful storyline. In the most alien of circumstances, humor is what always makes it feel more human.
I literally squee’d when this popped up on my feed. 😄🤘🏻 You are going to LOVE this show! Season 1 is fun, but season 2 and beyond is *chef’s kiss* ♥️♥️♥️
Angela!!! You’re doing Farscape!?!? 😃😃😃 I really hope you love it. I’m fairly certain you will 😏 It’s true, it’s a little up and down near the beginning. But it’s never bad. It’s such a fun show! The characters are incredible! Even Moya…you’ll come to love her 😊
The yellow guy is a Farscape D.R.D. - Diagnostic Repair Drone. As seen on Leviathan class transports. They are necessary for the Leviathan's continued operation. 😊 Just so you know this show has lots of space ships as well as some very exotic looking aliens. 😁 In all fairness... John's ship was floating in space when the Peacekeeper Prowler hit it with a glancing blow that spun the prowler around enough to cause it to collide with an asteroid...so not John's fault. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. 😢 Moya is a bio-mechanoid lifeform. A living sentient ship. Our crew members are Pilot - the ships navigator and liaison, Ka D'argo - a Luxan Warrior, Rygel the XVIth a Hynerian Dominar, P'au Zotoh Zhaan - a Delvian Priestess, Officer Aeryn Sun - a Peacekeeper Commando of the Plaisar Regiment. Captain Bialar Crais is in charge of the Peacekeeper Command Carrier. Sebacean by race along with Aeryn Sun. 😊 Interstellar = The space or void between stars within the same galaxy. Intergalactic = The space or void between two galaxies such as Andromeda and the Milky Way. 😅 Claudia Black was in the Vin Diesel sci-fi movie Pitch Black which was the first movie in the Chronicles of Riddick trilogy. It was very reminiscent of Ridley Scott's Alien. 😮
After Farscape completed its run, SyFy had Browder and Black transfer to one of the Stargate series.Morena Baccarin from Firefly did as well. It almost seemed like a SciFi full employment program.
The difference is Interstellar = Between stars. Intergalactic = Between Galaxies. Farscape was such a good show, the Firefly of its age and the Crichton and Aeryn relatioinship is something you should keep an eye on if you watch more it becomes the soul of the show and the chemistry those two actors had was magic on screen.
This show is hands down the best ever Sci-Fi show ever made. Zero budget for CGI so they just did practical. Chefs kiss, more shows should return to doing that. Lets Frellin Go.
Absolutely excited to follow you on this journey. I only got into farscape 10 years ago and it was a blast for my partner and I. The show feels different compared to most other scifi.
My level of excitement that you are watching this show is through the roof!! Poor Farscape gets so overlooked when it was some of the best sci-fi media, not just for it's own time, but of ALL time! Plus, muppets! Also I 100% never noticed you had a DRD back there 🤣
Farscape has been in my top 3 Sci-Fi series of all times for decades and continues to hold it's place. One of the best sci-fi series ever created. And a great example of a character driven story telling. Every character is interesting and feel 3 dimensional. It's a great watch all around.
finally someone that calls farscape a tv series instead of calling it tv show, tv show is something like pimp my ride or ninja warrior and farscape is a tv series anyway whats your other two fave tv series from the top 3 list ?
@@deda_Rajko Babylon 5 and Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Eureka made me officially expand the list to a 4-way tie years ago because it has the same level of high quality character development and the fact that much like Farscape, it has actual consequences to the events and outcomes of episodes that don't just go away. Not to mention, Eureka has the best handling of time travel (and it's consequences) I think I've ever seen in a sci-fi project.
I kept thinking, "Well, we finished BSG, what now?" And now you are following up with two of my other favorite sci-fi shows, FarScape and Babylon 5. FarScape started with 'what the hell is this' and quickly snared me because of my love of anything Henson. Babylon 5, my brother and I would get a six pack of IBC root beer, get a pizza, and watch the show while playing Magic: The Gathering during commercials. It was one of our best bonding times and remains one of my happy thoughts all these years later. Effects and makeup just keep getting better as you go. Can't wait to share another journey with you!
This is an incredible example of good science fiction with truly unique aliens (courtesy of the Jim Henson company and creator Rockne S. O'Bannon) and very diverse, strong female characters. I love it. And there really are some Wizard of Oz parallels. In addition to the whole "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore" of it, there's also the fact that the main character's arrival resulted in the accidental death of that Peacekeeper commander's brother. And, of course, the quest to get home.
The cute little robots are DRDs- they're biomechanical living things that perform maintenance and repairs for Moya. Moya is a Leviathan - a living Starship kinda like a space whale. No weapons, but a limited shield that the starburst ability to run. Pilot is just that- he's Moya's pilot- a separate being. Sebations are humans in that part of the galaxy. They are the Peacekeepers. You'll learn more about them as things go on.
Believe me, there is no scifi quite like Farscape. So unpredictable and charmingly weird. Claudia Black is an amazing actress and is an icon as Aeryn Sun. Always loved the amount of color that is used in this show, which contrasts to the usual muted colors in other scifi. Farscape had a tiny budget for such an ambitious story but they never held back and tried to go as big as they could.
Other than Farscape and Stargate SG-1, Claudia Black is in: Pitch Black - the start of the Riddick franchise The Nevers Ahsoka The Originals And for the Gamers: She is Uncharted's Chloe Frazer FFXIV narrator (and the Leviathan in worlds of FF) Original God of War's Artemis (not the new one set with the other Pantheon) Destiny 1 & 2 - Tess Everis several voices in Mass Effect 2 & 3 Gear of War 3 & 4 - Samantha Byrne
@@zincorium1 I didn't so much forget as I limited my list to either games I played or if I didn't, the games had over 10 million copies sold. Dragon Age Origins sold only 3.2 million copies, Inquisition sold 6 million. Less than 10 million. Whereas, The Uncharted games she was in sold almost 30 million total (2 sold 6, 3 sold 6, 4 sold 15, only Lost Legacy did poorly.) FFXIV sold 24 million Destiny has over 25 million subscribers God of War 2005 sold 4.6 but I played it Gear of War and Mass Effect I've played
Ok, this made me a subscriber!!! Thank you so much for giving one of my favorite shows a chance. It gets exponentially better at it goes. Loved your review and I can’t wait to go on this journey with you. Much peace, love and as always… MTFBWY! Always ❤️
BSG was filmed in Canada and showcased some great canadian character actors, Farscape was filmed in Australia and showcases some great Aussie character actors.. Claudia Black and Virginia Hey for starters
