Delve with us into this fascinating world of how PANAMA was created since it was just a few volcanic islands millions of years ago and its formation up to the present day.
The Biomuseo - a powerful conjunction between science and art, is a natural history museum dedicated to Panama that explores the relationship between its biodiversity and its culture. In 8 exhibitions it tells the story of the rise of the Isthmus of Panama 3 million years ago, and how that rise united continents and divided seas, changing the world forever.
The controversial museum design is the only one of its kind in the entire region. Designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry, in his first foray into Latin America.
The BioMuseum, the result of a collaborative effort between the Smithsonian Institution, the Amador Foundation of Panama, and the City of Panama, was built on the Amador Causeway. Both the building and its location are spectacular, offering views of the Panama City skyline and bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean and the entrance to the Panama Canal on the other.
Its realization was entrusted to Frank Gehry by the Amador Foundation, affiliated with the Smithsonina Institute, so that the world knows the history of the Isthmus of Panama and the natural wealth it contains. It is the first building that the architect carried out in Latin America.
Between the years 1986-1996, researchers from the Smithsonian Institute conducted a study to determine the age of the Isthmus. To do this, they collected samples of fossils and sediments, reaching the conclusion that the collision of two tectonic plates 3,000,000 years ago caused this area to rise from the sea to the surface, a narrow strip of land that unites two continents and separates the oceans, allowing one of the largest known migrations. According to experts, in this piece of land that forms the isthmus there are more species of birds, mammals, reptiles and plants than in the United States and Canada together. Although at the end of the 20th century and as part of tourism planning, the museum began to be built, it was not until five years later that its construction began, but financial and technical problems postponed its completion for almost ten years
Situation
Located on the east side of the south entrance to the canal, at the end of the Causeway facing the Pacific Ocean, the museum is located on the Amador Causeway in Panama City, in a former US military base. In the museum you can see various points of the city, both in its most modern part and in the Old Town, Ancón Hill or the Bridge of the Americas. While the Canal worked, this area was closed to Panamanians.
The Isthmus of Panama is a small strip of land that not only separates the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic, but is also the meeting point between North America and South America, making possible a rich biodiversity and allowing land animals to move between the two continents.
