I watched him, Saturday night in Saratoga. So true. Prince, even as his career began handed complete works to his distributors. Stevie wonder did this in the early 70's too. This guy has visualized all the audio feeds, but the product is already genius. He had a way with picking any instrument up and playing it like a primary instrument. A Genesis solo performance I will never forget.

Listen out for some mostly Gershwin quotes at 4:01.. 'Slap That Bass', 'It Ain't Necessarily So', 'Night and Day' (not a Gershwin tune), 'It's Very Clear', 'Nice Work If You Can Get It', 'And the living is easy' (Summertime), 'I got Rhythm'.... Mind blown!

Wow, how does a guy who can sing six-part harmonies in the most complex chord arrangements not read music well? Not throwing any shade, I just find that too hard to believe lol. But I guess it's possible
@IsmaelSilVig
@IsmaelSilVig 8 лет назад
+Esprit6 The same way any decent musician can memorize two or three voices from a melody, I guess Jacob is gifted in a way he can extend the same quality to a greater capacity.
@Esprit6
@Esprit6 8 лет назад
+Iszil +Iszil you're right, a decent musician has a good "ear" for most common pitch intervals like thirds and fifths, and common m/M chords, but to grasp chords like minor 9ths and complex progressions like this without first knowing what it even looks like on a staph? That's a special kind of musical genius to me 👏🙌

arlacta I can hear that it's microtonal because it's clearly smaller than a minor 2nd which is the smallest "standard" (12TET) interval :) Beyond that I don't know what exactly it is. My ear isn't quite that sharp! I'm talking about the two times he sings the word "be", if that wasn't clear. The second "be" is slightly higher pitched than the first.

I think the only reason people aren't liking his music is because of the fast paced harmonic rhythm, but I'd like to say, if you don't understand harmony you won't understand what he is doing. It is so facinating. I hope he keeps his style. It's so addictive to listen to his progressions. I usually don't listen to the same music that much, but this kid has me hooked.

Just when you think it can not get any crazier than the previous video... Putting everything aside, I can say that I NEVER heard anyone "dare" to use a chord you used at 4:13 in a context of a vocal arrangement and rarely in any other (unless it is a super modern classical composition). A cluster on a chord on a bass...triple structure. Wow...And that piano solo...You sir are RIDICULOUS I could of course say that I feel it is a bit too busy for my taste, packing all these chords in one arrangement, but who cares...it is not a musical arrangement, or a tune...it is a musical ACHIEVEMENT! No other way to put it!

Buick GSX sarcasm or nah? I happen to think it still rings (mostly) true but I’d be curious to hear dissenting opinions since almost everyone I know agrees with me

What I love about this song in particular is that every time I listen to it, I hear something new. For example, at 4:01, the Jacob at the top right says "it ain't necessarily so". You probably didn't hear that, but now every time you listen to this song, that part will stand out.

I'm not sure if anyone has noticed this, but at 0:28 Jacob says "ba-ba-ba-da", and at 1:04 he mixes it up by saying "fa-fa-fa" into "fa-sci-na-ting rhy-thm" and while doing this he's kind of sneaking in what's called "The McGurk Effect". It's when your brain is trying to interpret what you see visually with what you hear. Basically if Jacob did this intentionally, then by the time he says "fa-fa-fa" into "fa-sci-na-ting" he wanted you to think you heard "ba-ba-ba" instead, thus fooling your senses while you watch the video of him singing. So, did it fool anyone? This video linked below explains it better. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_UzWeZZ9XeQ.html

You're right, and I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out - good spot! Hello from three years in the future, and a new discoverer of Jacob Collier. Liked comment, partly so it appears higher in the comments list so the time stamps are easier to find for other people...

I usually decry the use of the word "genius" - it should be reserved to describe a person of spectacular talent/gifts in a given area. The word clearly does so in the case of Jacob Collier.
@garyfowler7726
@garyfowler7726 10 лет назад
I am going to pretty confidently say that there is some other vocal plug-ins rather than just Jacob's voice here especially at the "All together now" and the lick that ensues at 2:20 and then it happens again at the "Let me hear you say yeah" at 2:33 - 3:09 It sounds like he is doing some light vocal fill-ins in the background but those front ground vocals are a completely different texture from his voice.

Just wanna point out that this was over 6 years ago; he was 20 years old at the time! Age is just a number, but OY does he have some insane talent! An incredibly proficient multi-instrumentalist, boundary-pushing composer, vocalist, visionary... I just discovered Jacob three days ago and he's made me cry tears of joy more times than I care to count. 👏In👏sane 👏ta👏lent. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

It is too easy to say "He is a genius" "He is gifted" and of course "He is so talented!" . Though he grew up in a very musical family, he must have put a LOT of time into his craft. All so called "talented" people do. Charlie Parker said in his interview " I used to put in at least 11 to 15 hours a day. I did that for over a period of 3 to 4 years." I thank Jacob for bringing a fresh, happy, very musical and high level sound to the world and especially to the young people. To the people who dislike this video: Please either show WHAT YOU CAN DO or just leave.
