Andy Crow is clearing the barn of straw which has become home to lots and lots of rats - and he wants them off the farmyard. As a final effort to get rid of as many as possible Andy has enrolled the help of a couple of terriers, a lurcher and a lab/springer cross. As he moves the bales the dogs and sticks start flying.

Why hunt/shoot rats?
There are thought to be more than 10 million rats in the UK (…yuk).
Rats carry many diseases which can spread to humans, normally through their urine, including: leptospirosis or Weil's disease, salmonella, listeria, toxoplasma gondii and hantavirus.
Rodent contamination also presents a significant risk to livestock health. Both cattle and sheep will ingest a large proportion of faecal contamination (Daniels & Hutchings 2001).
Rats can also inflict structural damage. They can cause fires by gnawing away the insulation around electrical cables, floods by puncturing pipes and they chew through gas pipes. The insurance sector has estimated that rodent damage to wiring is responsible for 25% of all electrical fires in buildings.
Finally, rats can ruin an organisation's reputation. If clients and customers spot evidence of rodent infestation in the premises you manage, they are unlikely to want to do business with you.

As a boy on the farm I had a dog, half rat terrier and half fox terrier who never met a rat he liked and never missed when going after them. Best hunter I ever had.

I understand how this may look cruel to some, but this is by far the most humane way to dispatch vermin. Terriers were born to hunt, and that's exactly what they do as soon as they spot a rat. Lock on, catch, kill. It's better than having a rat ingest a poison and die in agony. Not to mention, terriers are working dogs. I can assure you they're never happier than when they're ratting.

i used to keep jack russells before my work accident . Uses to work them at the local farms . a farmer never turns away a jacks , free vermin maintenance! afterwards i used to get a knock on the door asking if they could borrow the dogs . it was a great local service and great exercise for the dogs . i miss them . great dogs .

Please STOP defaming lovely yorkies as rat killers and hunters..they're the sweetest breeds and it's NOT built in their dna..they probably want to please their stupid humans by following instructions or are provoked and forced to do this. We have a senior yorkie and a junior yorkie poo and neither of them exhibited any aggression when we had a wild rat infestation in our kitchen. My younger dog is definately highly aggressive and protective/territorial of his space. But when we actually had a rat infestation, neither of them went hunting. They just stared, sniffed, were curious and sometimes scared/confused with their ears and tails communicating the TRUTH about their feelings about their space being shared with rats. The wild rats were definately not survivors either. Most of them were babies and i remember when i closed the food storage closet and kept a little food under the door, the baby rat died of fear, anxiety and trauma of being trapped. Most traumatizing experience for me to see it's tail outside and only to see it died of fear when the doggies would bark when they would hear the rats squeek. I can't believe you pathetic people are allowed to still do this. Maybe call a wildlife facility to catch them and release them in the woods or the forest? This planet is as much theirs as it is yours, and yet you people created the most inhumane games and even put it on youtube. Terriers are loyal, protective and brave. They were exploited and trained to become terrorists. I'm surprised there are no laws banning this sport game. But there are laws in place for other things. Makes total sense!!

My Mum lived in a semi rural area in the 20s. One a year, word would be spread at school on a Friday that the farmer was clearing out the last of the hay stacks. All local kids and dogs were invited. Old doors were placed around the stack. Then the workers, with string tied around the bottom of their trousers would climb in to clear the last of the hay, The dogs would be going totally frantic Her dog was very effective, one bite, one rat. No-one had big dogs, they were too expensive. The boys would also climb in with sticks. the girls would be at the barrier with sticks. Mum remembered this vividly 60 years later. By killing the rats, they were prevented from going into the locals homes. I suppose this is oral history from 90 years ago.

I had a large bag full of irreplaceable exotic foods from Japan stored in a closet. The mice discovered it. The mice bit a tiny corner of each package. They ate almost none of the food, but they sampled every single package. Mice are much smaller but they do incredible damage. If the much had eaten the food, that would have been almost forgivable. The fact that hundreds of dollars of food was wasted by the mice is what I can't stand. When the leopard, the lion and the tiger is extinct outside of zoos-rats and mice will be thriving.

My grandfather came from Cornwall England to the US in the late 1800's and during prohibition he would get paid to rid the blind pig of rats(it was by a river). he would catch a rat, put it in a cage, douse it with gas and set it on fire, put out the flames and set it loose. It would run screeching and all the other rats would leave the house.

I believe the last legal rat tournament, i.e. rat v. dog, was around 1910. I think the record was something like 50 rats killed by one terrier in one minute, something amazing like that. I don't know why they made it illegal. I think most people hate rats, those that are running free at least.
@b_uppy
@b_uppy 3 года назад
I think part of the issue is breeding an animal just so it can be killed, the other is that they may have been catching wild rats and holding them for the tournies. The fleas alone on wild rats are problematic for humans, so that'd be the other reason to forbid the practice.

Mixed feelings here. I'm a strict vegetarian, wouldn't wear leather or suede, and hate cruelty to animals, but I can't be sorry when dogs finish rats off. I spent my teenage years listening to the vile sounds of scrambling and scraping in the walls when trying to sleep - worse than having a ghost in the attic! Wish rats had never left Norway. Then the buggers like to chew electrical cabling, blowing themselves up and starting fires. Grrr. I RESENT them!
