Fast-growing fern completely covers Lake Anza to the shock of several East Bay residents

People hoping to cool off or enjoy the scenery at Lake Anza at Tilden Regional Park were shocked to find it blanketed in some sort of green and brown plant. According to East Bay Regional Park District, the small aquatic ferns are called “Azolla” or “mosquito fern.”

Probably because of phosphorous runoff. Like the official said, the azolla is competing with the algae for nutrients (probably not nitrogen as azolla harbors nitrogen fixing bacteria) and keeping the water cool for fish (including mosquitofish). This is much better than toxin producing algae.

Azolla will bomb out the lake when all the plants beneath die off because it's blocking the light. People should try gathering it up and selling it online.

If you live nearby and have a bucket and a garden, scoop some up and use it to mulch your nitrogen loving plants like tomatoes and squash. It composts very quickly and since it's a nitrogen fixing plant it will give a nitrogen boost to your plants.

Azolla is a wonderful, natural carbon capture mechanism. It pulls Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide out of the air and water, to fuel oxygen production and plant growth.

There is a small zoo and a golf course right near the lake so definitely a good chance.

pretty sure she would be closed anyways right now, they swimming area itself is a mess not sure it has to to with fern but not being maintained because of covid. says on the east bay parks site, Lake Anza is CLOSED for the 2022 swim season due to ongoing maintenance. so looks like shes not opening for swimming this year

With no sunlight doesn’t photosynthesis stop? I would think blocking the sunlight off would just deprive everything underneath. The algae will thrive and everything else will die. Definitely could be wrong though.

This fern can skimmed off quickly using a fine net. I should be reduced some cause it can suffocate things by reducing the oxygen. A person could go out in a small row boat and reduce the amount manually in a few hours once a week. Surely you could find a volunteer to do this. It would help the bird and insect population these are the base of the environment.

The material as it dies falls to the lake bottom and rots. This is what uses up the oxygen in the lake. No you don't want to kill it with Chem just reduce the amount.

It seems like they're doing everything to keep people from coming to this park. All of the view parking has been blocked off and most of the picnic areas have been closed to the public.

The plant taking over is a natural phenomena, and its apparently beneficial to wildlife. The comfort of the fish and wildlife is more important than that of humans. Also, a lot of places closed due to the pandemic. These parks were always PACKED, so it makes sense they would try to limit how many people go.

@@MexicanTeTe I've been going there for 50 years and I've never seen it like that before. Apparently you believe everything you're told? Also the pandemic was not the reason they blocked off all the view parking, it was closed before that. Tilden is being neglected and not properly maintained.

@@caesard.8711 I've witnessed lakes change drastically before. It's not always a man-made cause. These things can occur because of invasive species (brought by humans or other wildlife), the creation/destruction of beaver dams, or runoff from fertilizers or sewage (which is man-made) that throws certain plant growth out of balance. Just because it's the first time you've witnessed a change, doesn't mean it's a new phenomenon. It might suck that you can't go swimming, but it doesn't mean that human intervention is required. The parks service #1 priority is maintaining the environments most suitable for wildlife, not humans.

I imagine the lake has mosquitofish, the azolla isn't going to do anything to affect the mosquito population. If anything, it might block larvae from accessing the water surface.
