But thankfully, this video makes understanding the different fiber types in your muscle much easier. If you like the 55 Min version of this video, this is the condensed answer.

Perhaps from an evolutionary standpoint, when an individual is sedentary the greatest potential threat that a muscle would need to be able to respond to would be an emergency situation or "faster twitch" situation. Just a thought, big fan doc keep it up thanks

Micah Ross no it’s because the modern world has poor people running everything and manual laborers have fast twitch muscles to pick up heavy ass shit in a quick rep, warrior societies had slow twitch muscles to endure long battles for hours, they would’ve thought the modern workout culture is ridiculous and idiotic. It’s literally just filled with descendants from manual laborers who love bulky ass bodies because it’s what they are.

Interesting. Id like to know what triggers the fibers to change. Not use , but what stimulus in the cell causes it. Perhaps as a way to grow slow twitch for more power.

Does the development and function of different fiber types have implications for training variety? Meaning, if I want to do different types of workouts with the goal of well-rounded fitness (strength, endurance, hypertrophy, cardio, etc) do some conflict with each other (like the concern with doing too much cardio when hypertrophy training), is there always a trade off or are there benefits to combining some types of workouts, or just what's the relationship in general?

Yup! There are always trade offs. For your listed goal, I would just keep doing a variety of things and you should be good!

As I understand it, the amount of mitochondria you have in the cell determines whether it is either slow or fast twitch on a gradient. You can cause mitochondria division through diet.

one thing I want to get a handle on. you say that 2x fibers really cannot be trained, but we know athletes can improve things such as their sprint speed or jump height, and it can be done with methods like plyometrics which rely on very quick stimuli to get the results. is there something about the involvement on 2x fibers here that I am missing, or is it that 2A fibers are much more heavily recruited in these activities than most out there would have you believe?

@KLJF you mean drugs help after age 18 to enhance fast twitch fibres?

Do those types of fibers have different "fuel" preference (as in energy source), and are they completely dependent on those "fuel" preferences or they vary on other sources as well? And thanks for the great video(lecture)❤

essentially your muscles break down stored glycogen into glucose which is in turn used in cellular respiration but the only difference between fast/slow twitch is that slow twitch uses aerobic respiration and fast twitch uses anaerobic respiration (lactic acid fermentation)

Dr. Galpin, would you be so kind to talk about the different forms of magnesium? I'm taking magnesium aspartate (just for general health, 450mg) but I'm worried because I found out that in that form it could act as a neurotoxin, what do you know about that? Great videos, Thanks

took a DNA test I got the rarest type of muscle genetics (not a good thing) I got TT which means Im either all or mostly slow twitch. I have been wondering what this means for going into hypertrophy. Im not expecting to look like ronnie coleman or Cbum im not delusional but if its gonna be almost impossible to to put on significant muscle whats the point pf weight training. I also thought that was wierd that i got that muscle composition ive always been significantly stronger than most people from childhood to adulthood.

Is it correct that Dark meat in a bird is fast twitch and white is slow? Is it also true that the color is due to the amount of Mitochondria, Dark having more?
@theheebs100
@theheebs100 5 лет назад
it's actually the opposite. dark meat is slow and white meat is fast. it makes sense if you think of the fact that chickens walk around slowly all the time, but only use their breast muscles for short but intense wing flapping to fly in short bursts. also, type 1 muscles are red because they have more blood in them. they rely on oxygen for fuel and that comes from blood. type II uses ATP, and pure 2x muscle fibers are white in color.
