Love my Hybrid Poplars. This is a full review video of me growing mine over the last 6 years. I originally covered this after 3 years. Today we show you 3 more years. This is her 6 year birthday. I love them. They are strong, hard, and grow like weeds.
Thanks for watching guys. Please subscribe, and check out my channel for more videos!

The hybrid poplar is an aggressive forest tree not suitable for residential use. It should not be planted near buildings and septic systems. The trees develop large wide-spreading roots at the surface that will crack pavement and foundations. Large trees after 15 or 20 years develop brittle canopies that drop large branches. After 30 or 40 years they can topple or break off. I strongly recommend that you plan to coppice or remove this tree as it grows. I have 40 year old trees that are over 100 feet tall. They are constantly dropping large 6" diameter plus, 15-20 foot long branches. Very dangerous. Several trees have toppled in strong winds, breaking off about 1/3 of the way up. All of the lawn is dead around the trees and large roots dominate the surface. If you really must have these trees, plan to coppice every 15 or 20 years, or whatever size you can handle, because they will grow back for you from the stump. Do not let these trees get so tall that they are dangerous and you require an expensive tree service to come in and remove it for you.

All fast growing trees are short lived. Poplars are notorious for this. But they still have their uses. If you are in your seventies and want to plant a tree that you can enjoy, who cares what it's going to do in twenty or thirty years? If you need a quick wind break and are planting away from the house and water and sewer lines they are perfect. They will continually sucker and rejuvenate themselves. They are also good for a quick screen while other, more favorable, trees grow. That being said, they don't grow everywhere. I have very rocky ground and planted some. They did good for six or seven years and (I think) the roots ran out of places to go, and they started to die back. They only got about 15 feet high. Two or three are still alive at 15 years, but they never got over 20 feet and have a lot of dead branches.

A few of my neighbors back in the 90s planted these and a few cottonwoods, beautiful trees, the trees can have AGGRESSIVE roots, within 6 years the cottonwood tree planted in their front yard near their driveway had roots going under it lifting the driveway, my other neighbor had a row of lombardy poplars, they didn’t last as long, you don’t see these trees planted for residential use as often, I’ll always love these trees for their beauty

I needed some trees to help stop erosion where a drainage pond had been filled in. This area is about 1/2 an acre. I ordered 8 of these trees. There are now 3 years old. The largest is bigger than the tree in this Video was at 3 years.the second largest is about 1/2 that size. The other 6 haven't grown at all.....they leaf out every spring but only grow about 6 inches and then stop. So in conclusion it is hit or miss with this particular company. Do some research.....there are some other varieties of hybrid poplar out there that might give more consistent results.

Not sure if mine is a hybrid. Just found it growing in the weirdest place...near my foundation, right under a north facing window, under my hydrangea. Plant app said its poplar and its certainly growing fast enough for me to believe it. I planted it in the back corner of my property (to block out the ugly sterile light of the led spotlight ppl up there keep have blaring 24/7). My only fear is if it grows to be 100feet and wind makes it fall, what kind if trouble, lawsuits or expenses could I get into? What if it gets so wide that the canopy crosses the alley and brushes against the electric lines? Oh well. I need something there and it's free and better than the tree of "heaven" coming up everywhere.

In right place it is a good tree large yard lots of room to grow they soak up water there in willow family life span 30-50 years. Good for fast shade and soaking up standing water. Looks like a Lombardy poplar but Hybrid has longer life span generally.

@Joe.0oo
@Joe.0oo 3 года назад
I'm in the same boat- cut down too many ash to count thanks to that damn beetle. Be careful with just planting these as it'll create a monoculture- worse than just letting it grow back naturally. There are some great variety tree packs out there that include these, but also some slower growing maples/oaks. Having a nice mix of birch&poplar, spruce&pine, and maple&oak up in the Northeast is your best bet!
