I liked your point....."your dog has a great life, you don't have to do whatever they want When they want it...." I think we feel we have to spoil or give in to our pets too often, or feel bad when we don't.

Yep think of it as doing the right thing when you treat your dog like a dog and they actually like it.

100%, man. I rescued my pup at 9 months old. Had him over 10 months and at 19 months he follows me everywhere. When he'd give me that "lets play" look, or that "lets go for a walk" look... I'd take him. He's young and I want to be sure he gets exercised, but dammit... he can do it on MY time when I want to.

I have a standard poodle puppy. He is now 11 months and 70lbs. The pulling OMG, the pulling. I have tried a harness, a half martingale and a slip-lead. All that gear worked for a short time. My freaking back and arms omg. We needed changes and we needed them quick. My neighbor uses this gentle leader, she has a large doodle. I ordered one OMG!!! Took my dog for a hour walk, the walk was actually pleasurable. I am so glad I bought it.

Thank you Beckman! We wanted our hyper and reactive husky to be a good citizen on our walks for humans and pets, so we took your advice and got the gentle leader. You're right about the first struggle and fight as soon as the gentle leader on his face, because oh... he went to war with it. I'm so grateful for your thorough instructions because, I did exactly what you said to correct him when he fights it and for the first time my dog actually noticed me and not the gentle leader or the leash! We walked around the living room for 12 minutes with some corrections until he was ready for the front door. Through our front door is our courtyard and we walked around the courtyard for another 10 minutes with some corrections until he was ready for the front yard. When we got to the gate leading to the front yard, he was ready for the world. Walked in the front yard for 5 minutes to see if he is ready and he was! We walked around the neighborhood for 1.5hrs and he was so GOOD! No pulling, no fighting, no barking, no chasing and he didn't leave my side at all 😍. THANK YOU BECKMAN!!! My Buddy and I are buddies now. MAY GOD MULTIPLY YOUR BLESSINGS ❤❤❤

I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this information. We just adopted the most wonderful young Beagle about a week ago and we adore him. Problem is..he is LITERALLY the MOST leash reactive dog we’ve ever dealt with or seen! We’re talking spawn of Satan on walks especially when he sees another dog. I’ve been watching tons of videos, trying different training tactics all to no avail. The minute I got done watching this video I drove straight over to the pet supply and bought a gentle leader. I followed your tips from this video to the T and……wow! Different dog! Not one outburst, no insane pulling on the leash! I’m so encouraged and hopefull now!😃

The Gentle Leader was the breakthrough our 155lb Bull Mastiff needed to be able to go on walks! It gave us the confidence to take him out and remain calm. It was that calmness that helped him relax and accept commands. Highly recommend this for big dogs, especially in the beginning of the relationship.

Gentle leaders are a really great tool !!! Your training approach, etc is EXCELLENT and your use of treats is PERFECT!!! I love that the end goal should eventually be "weaning" off the 'halti." I used the same 'method' with one of our late dogs - Beagle/GSD cross with Beagle being predominant - she LOVED the garbage. About three years later, she walked beautifully by your side, off-leash in the city, from there on until her end.

Thank you for your honesty and clear instructions. You are the only one to clearly state how long a dog should be on a gentle leader. I also appreciate the truthful information on dog aggression and dog training. I have spent so much time enforcing door manners, etc. with my stubborn GSD I literally would cry out of frustration. He looked up at me and started shaking his head trying to get the collar off. Once he realized he was fighting a losing battle he relaxed. Now there’s not near as much pulling as before. Just a light tug on the leash and you have his attention. Thanks for the insight and videos! 🙏

I really need her to heal at my side I live in the country and walk on the roads and need to have control and her attention for our safety . I’m using your videos and it’s helping ! I'm really glad that you're telling people that this tool is great and explaining that's the same thing actually like the tool used on horses while most people really think it's muzzle. I meet them on daily basis and they keep asking if my dog really needs it. It's really only thing that could help me and my weimaraner but we've been using it for almost 4 months now and I'm still not ready to go to walk without it. Also I can't believe this is the first time it's been used on this dog. She would fight it hard like every other dog but she's not bothered at all and she's not even interested in treats... I used treats to put it on my dog's head (putting the gentle leader between him and the treat, so he had to go through the loop with his nose to get it) until recently and only 2-3 days during the walks. Recently I stopped giving any treats for it and he acts same like this dog when we have to go out, he doesn't want it even though he wants to go out and he's been used to it for months.

I'm frustrated as I've always personally trained all my own dogs - I'm now 69. But I thought it might be fun to take my new mini Aussie boy into a "puppy" class for socialization. There were seven pups in the class. Every lunging, barking, out of control, excited pup was wearing....guess what? A full body harness...four of the seven pups. I felt so bad for the pup parents as the trainer didn't offer alternative control help. At the end of the eight week course, nothing had changed. I did tell one couple to watch your videos...they said you made sense and thanked me. So I thank you! I've broken out many foals/horses in my life. I wanted to ask these people if they ever saw any one leading a horse in a body harness?? Well maybe...at 30 miles an hour down the road...out of control :) Sad because I think my boy would be good at agility, and that would be fun. Should I try this program with this same organization?

As a horse person, and now a mule person, I have always wondered why we don't use the same kind of head restraints on dogs! Can you imagine trying to control an unwilling horse with a neck collar instead of a halter (or head collar as it's called in Europe)?! From this perspective, the Gentle Leader makes so much sense to me.

The Gentle Leader is a miracle and I admire them for getting their product on the shelf for $15. I am one of those people that is getting thousands of dollars to train "impossible" dogs. My current one-on-one is an 11 month old Black German Shepherd female. I was told she is worst case scenario, even though she's been through 5 other trainers. Cried her way out of every cage she ever got put in. Until me. I put her in a giant wire cage next to my bed and she screamed for 4 nights. It sucked, but I waited her out, telling her the whole time that I was doing her a favor. From one moment to the next, she looked at me like, "OK,I get it." and slept through night 5. Another 5 days was spent getting her body used to CBD and lowering her off the charts anxiety. She had progressely better leash skills on the farm that vanished when we got to Tractor Supply Co on day 17's 1st test in public. TSC just so happens to have Gentle Leaders, so I bought one for her and put it on outside the store. After walking her for all of 8 minutes, I took her back in. She was a perfect dog. No sniffing any items. Walking with me stopping with me. Turning with me. Now I'm on day 19 of 30. Back on the farm, I used it once when we got home and switched back to the collar. She pretty much keeps a few hairs touching my leg at all times without bumping me. When I release her to roam a bit [inside my bubble] and she tugs at all, I sit her and show her the Gentle Leader. For the rest of that walk, I'm holding the leash with my index finger. I have phases I try with dogs, giving them the chances to do simple dog stuff on their own. It's a real self esteem booster for them to realize they are pleasing me on their own. I wait to see if they need a Gentle Leader and then buy them one if it comes to it. That's why TSC is the first place I test them in public. As always, this is the best RU-vid channel on dogs by far. I click on every video to show my thanks.

Used one with my malamute female. Pulling was the main problem with her. Once she learned she could pull the nose strap off she’d do it every time. After putting it back on her and adjusting the clip part she’d use her dew claw to pull it off while twisting her head. Then she’d chomp down on the nose strap and cut through it. We went through a hand full of them before going to a pinch collar. I was 17 her and a wolf malamute male were my FIRST dogs ever. The gentle leader is great. My dog hates it, but one thing that has really helped is walking on concrete vs. near any grass. My dog constantly wants to rub her head on ground and try to get the lead off her nose (like he described)... but she naturally doesn't like doing that on concrete or asphalt. I was really hoping to see him have to correct for that behavior.

I have a Giant breed dog Dane/Mastiff and some of the halter collars don't fit the Larger breeds very well. I found a company called Bold Lead Designs and the product is called The Perfect Pace no pull halter leash 6 feet. Your videos are great! Can you do a video about multiple dog homes? I have 2 dogs and all they want to do is play.

You are awesome. I have a 13 week old puppy & she can stop & refuse to go. Will this work for her. She is half shih-poo. And the barking is out of control...barks to be barking.

Actually most people are using electric and e-collars wrong. They're actually the two prongs that you're supposed to set on either side of that large muscle right behind the ear. Most people don't use a correct more elastic collar that keeps the pressure. The colors do typically tend to slide around the esophagus. But you make a very good point people have a very hard time using things correctly and things can often slip and move. Even when tightening a collar around the upper neck so that way you have more control over the head it can still slide down or end up choking the dog a little bit or if it pulls it can choke itself a bit more. Also I may not be using them right but no pull chest harnesses have not worked very well for me

My son used to say "you're a bad mom" when I asked him why he thought that. He said "because you won't let me have what I want" . I told him "but that's my job because you can't just do whatever you want when you want." He said it's not fair, and I told him he is absolutely correct, but that's life.

Ok so I got a couple gentle leaders coming in today for my girls. I was wondering if I should eventually go back to collars or if I can just always use the gentle leader? I'm just not sure if it's ok to make it a permanent tool or if I should only use it if/when needed?

I've seen you use both the flat collar and this gentle leader for a loose leash walk. Do you have a preference as to when to use one or the other? Either on a small dog or a large one for example?

Probably depends on how wild the dog is. Mellow dog probably doesn't need those bigger corrections

I feel like even tho my 90 lb Golden is good now on this I need to keep using it because if by remote chance a stray dog runs up to me on walk - I know he’d pull me in reacting to dog. With knee replacement I’d be a gonner

Do you recommend avoiding off leash parks while trying to train a dog with leash reactivity who is aggressive when on leash walks?

It’s obnoxious how much quicker my dog responded to leash corrections for “leaving me” than just reinforcing her when she was walking next to me. Now I do both

Could you tell me what the difference is between a gentle leader and a sporn head harness? We have the sporn one but now realized they seem different from eachother. Not sure which is best! Thanks!

Good advice to not let the dog go down to the ground to get it off because that's how my dog gets hers off. And I agree that the dog has a good life so they don't need to call all the shots! "I'm the boss and I go where I want to go." That's another good quote!

For people who dont have or dont want to use a gentle leader, use a regular collar/choker/martingale/prong whatever. It needs to be high up on the neck, not sitting down at the base of the neck. This is how professionals use regular collars. Watch a crufts dog show to see how high up the neck the lead sits. Higher up on the neck gives more control of the dog's head.

Do I still pull the lead and correct if my dog is pulling towards something he is fearfull off? I'm worried it will make it worse. I am using just a normal neck collar and normal lead

I would really like to see and learn this method on much older rescue dog like ours. She is 4 years old 15 lbs pooch, rescue from California. By age 1 y.o. she was already rescued to Canada. We got her few months ago and facing a bunch of problems with outside world. Pulling, lunging, barking at any dog. She gets so upset or excited, that she trembles and her breathing becomes so fast. At first we thought that she could of been used in dog fights. Very aggressive towards dogs, not humans. When she is at home she is an angel. For a few months we didn't have a quiet, relaxed or fun walk. It's very stressful for both of us ( I'm a mom and she is my dog when it comes to walks). Plase, help us. Thanks.

Use the exact same method he shows in this video. With an older dog it could possibly take a bit longer to make them conditioned to the gentle lead if they’re very stubborn but it should work if you do it correctly 😊

I do have a question. So I am disabled and use a cane to walk. Many videos I have watch doesn't work for me because you need more than one hand and I only have 1 hand to use the other one has my cane. My question is, is it ok to use this on a 5month old puppy? I just got a German Shepherd Lab mix pup 2 months ago and we are really trying to stop the pulling because I just can't do it and she has so much energy! If this is ok to use on a puppy then I want to get it. Please answer this question. 😀

My dog, an 8 month terrier x pup, sits down adamantally after a short walk on a "gentle leader" and short of dragging him around or changing back to a standard collar or harness, I am not sure what to do, any suggestions?

What if my dog simply sits as the correction is implemented. (We have taught ‘sit’ for just about everything else.) Not come back to me but sit in place in order to wait for additional direction? Do I need to have him come back to me before proceeding on the next few steps?

I'm new to your channel and I'm shookt by this video. Just wondering if gentle leader is safe for dogs that suddenly runs as soon as the door opens. I'm worried that his neck might snapped. My dog could seat and stay as I say it but he suddenly just ran when I say, "okay go". He's pretty stubborn sometimes, maybe because of his breed, siberian husky. Hoping for a reply.
