Prayer & Fasting
Biblical disciplines like fasting are intended to become part of the lifestyle of a believer. Our lifestyle is worship and we are obedient to God, how we worship, how we pray, fast, read the Bible, fellowship with other believers, serve, give of our time, money, and talents, and more!
Keep in mind there are other reasons why many choose to do the Daniel Fast instead of the biblical way of fasting food. Know that the Lord will see and reward the fast that He leads you to! I think I made the point of how it isn’t truly a biblical fast (since we are eating certain foods) to challenge those who may have gotten comfortable with the Daniel fast and perhaps the Lord is wanting to stretch you with a biblical fast! Be led of the Holy Spirit when deciding what to fast and how long.
Be prayerful of what the Lord will have you fast! ALWAYS be prayerful about it and if you are trying a new way to fast, a no food fast for example, look up or ask questions to other believers about it to gain wisdom on it. There are things you can do to prepare your body for a short no food fast - going into it and coming off of it!
Like any other spiritual discipline, this isn’t meant to be something we just check off the box. It’s so easy to make something spiritually fortifying into a religious task when we view it as a duty. We have to be aware of the religious spirit that Jesus often warns us against! When we keep a humble heart and desire to walk in obedience out of the love we have for Jesus, we will reap the spiritual reward from fasting.
I’d love to hear from you! What have you found helpful as you fast?
