I started a diet - no fructose. The week before i started, i was feeling light-headed and foggy. Near the end of that week, i was feeling terrible, like i was fighting some terrible affliction. 2 days before i started my diet, i binged on cinnamon rolls. 10 minutes later, i began sweating profusely and had a terrible headache. I only weighed 230lbs, so i thought 'no way this could be something like diabetes, right??' That night, i couldn't sleep, yet i was so tired. Every breath was hard, and just before falling asleep it was like i was suffocating, and i'd shoot back awake. The next day, i was anxious, lightheaded, worried.. i looked up diabetes videos and stumbled upon Lustig's lectures. This all happened 2 weeks ago. The next day, i stopped eating anything that contained fructose. That day was the best i have felt in 5 years. And every subsequent day since has been better. All i did was cut out fructose, and it was like my body yelled at me in joy. It felt like i was recovering from something traumatic. And today i feel fucking incredible. In the 2 weeks since then, i've lost 10lbs, sleep better, poop better, feel better, everything just seems better. The best part, is that because of these lectures, this isn't even a diet to me. I'm avoiding poison. That's how it seems to me. And it's the easiest life changing decision i've made for myself. Thank you for this lecture! UPDATE: 9 months later. I've lost 40lbs. I've suffered with HS, an inflammatory condition, for years. This diet has put my condition into full remission.
@@stevenharrison1213 i still eat fruits. I should clarify: no -added- fructose. Also i eat plenty of veggies nuts and seeds. When i do eat fruit it's primarily bananas. Also since this post ive lost 30 pounds and my HS is in full remission.

this video started a snowball effect for me.. submerging myself in videos about sugar and food and health... it changed my life... was at 428 lbs.. down to 301lbs and still going... the problem never was lazyness or over eating... it was all this fake food that they feed us.
Mike, there is a program in Britain that is based on this and the results have been phenomenal. Classic dieting programs even endorsed by health care professionals have been based on bad science (that Dr. Lustig marks out in this presentation.) Most large people overproduce more insulin too which stops hunger hormones and breaks down carbs to fat. Simple carbs are death to people like you and me
It's almost 2 years ago I made a major lifestyle change. I started Intermittent Fasting and gave up sugar and processed food. It took some effort because the system is designed to put us on the wrong path, but it's possible if you stick to it. I used to be obese, pre-diabetic, had high blood pressure, my joints hurt, and I was tired all the time. Today I'm 2 years older, but I feel 20 years younger, all those problems are long gone and I'm normal weight. Today I see sugar and processed foods as poison.
Im doing the same. Lost 40 lbs with another 30 to go. Side-note: went on a job out of town for a month, fell off the wagon and ate some sugary/processed foods and put on 10 lbs in one month. Goes to show: Sugar/processed= weight gain. Back on the wagon.

I followed this advice 20 years ago next month; went from size 16-18 to size 8. I still wear the clothes I bought back in 2002. If I cheat, I put on a couple pounds; now I know what to do to repair that. Real food IS better than processed food. Twenty years ago, low-carb was considered dangerous and unscientific. I did it anyway and wouldn't look back. My physician has no complaints about my lipid profile, my blood pressure is normal, and I walk 2+ miles daily (because I like it). When I tried low-carb back then, I actually found that I did less exercise - kept that to walking my dog, my favorite exercise, and did much better. I had been doing elliptical at a gym to no avail. Go figure!

That's so cool! I'm seeing all these inspirational comments about people cutting out fructose and becoming so much healthier... but I can't imagine not eating fruit as well :( guess I'm just making excuses tho.
Thank you for what you said about obesity. I am 66 and just went to the doctor for a checkup for the first time in decades. I spend 6 hours a week at the gym and eat almost no sugar or refined carbs but lots of fiber and greens. All my test numbers were beautiful. The doctor told me I was borderline clinically obese, according to the BMI score, but said I looked fine and there was nothing to worry about. The thing is, she asked NOTHING about my diet and was not particularly interested when I tried to talk about it, nor in how someone can be clinically obese (and in their seventh decade of life) and yet healthy. (In my 20s I was a sugar addict and about 100 lbs overweight, but I turned that around by giving up sugar And I feel much better now than I did in my 20s as a sugar addict.) It seems that the medical profession is all about taking tests and then trying to match up the test numbers with prescriptions, not about telling you how to actually be healthy. I think that most people probably depend on their doctors to tell them what to do, and figure if they doctor doesn't tell them about something, it can't be important. It's great that there are resources like this for people to educate themselves, but I think that the trend will not change until doctors start learning about this.
Tree Walker dr will never learn about it. 1. the money behind all the great Institutions of learning does not Come from Doctors but from businessman. 2. it’s illegal for doctors to in anyway suggest that anything other than medication or surgery will correct any health issues or concerns outside of the one so call condition Called obesity
Once your a sugar addict, you will always be, even when you cut out sugar. It's like being a Alcoholic, If you don't drink, you can live a active life, take 1 drink and It's all gone.🎆
No Doctor was pissed, cos saw a walking meal ticket, but nothing off the Big Pharma top-shelf...(where's my commission?) ...to prescribe, don't bother going.
true but, you are missing an important point. BMI is not suitable for all body types first of all, doctor saw that you don't fit in that category and you look fine, second- clearly very important- your test results were perfect so no reason to look into anything!! maybe the doctor was in a hurry seeing other patients or had a crappy day to listen to you, you never know!!
If you've stumbled across this video you should know that this research is currently changing the way health care professionals are tackling obesity in Europe. This is the future. Watch the whole damn thing, even the science bit.
@@goodtreeministries3751 Judging by the latest research, that's not the case. All sugar and processed carbs (bread, rice, grains, baked goods, cereals, pasta, even potatoes) cause havoc in our bodies, skinny or fat. It's what they do to the bodies internal systems. Japanese people don't eat even quarter the carbs and sugar that Westerners do, and they don't pig out. Recommend you start watching the loads of heart surgeons, doctors, bio chemists/engineers and other experts talking about this issue and the chronic disease these foods cause. Very enlightening. Find the talks on You Tube -- Keto diets.
There are exactly the same testimonials, similar videos, similar quoting of science by the "high carb low fat" camp. As someone who follows neither, I get amused a lot by reading and watching both sides. Both sides have people who have changed their lives, cured diseases like diabetes, autoimmune syndrome etc and provide robust scientific research to back their claims. I on the other hand don't believe that any diet is the holy grail. I believe that we have to experiment and discover for ourselves what works best for us in the environment we live in. All data and science regarding nutrition is statistical and ok on a population level but as an individual, you don't know what part of the statistic your body falls into. So just experiment and discover what works best for you and what you can follow. But don't consider any diet to be the universal solution as everyone is differnet and respind differently yo different foods.
What research and "loads" of experts? The people selling it? lol please Keto is just another in a long list of fad diets with almost no evidence to support that it's any better than all the other silly fad diets that come and go since it has no magical properties to make the weight loss mechanism any better or worse. And of course, it does not prevent or cure cancer.
I used to weigh 313 lbs (142kg), but I had normal blood results when I went to the doctor. It drove my nurse wife, crazy. In 2018 I lost 110lbs (50kg), and I didn't do one exercise. I lost it all by changing my diet.

Our recent "pandemic" is a baby compared to this one, and actually most of the people it attacked had compromised themselves by a lifestyle of self abuse, the greatest one being lack of exercise. One could be at proper weight and still eat piles of simple carbs. Yet one is not going to be healthy by just cutting out "sugar" Vigorous exercise forgives many dietary sins
Absolutely mindblowing. I just recently graduated college with a B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science and while we learned about leptin resistance and some of the things you described here, obesity was always described to us as more of a behavioral/calories in vs out issue rather than a biochemical one. pk eggle you’re correct. That depo shot really messed with my wife after our second child was born. It messed with her eating habits, weight management, sex drive, and mental awareness. A lot of people would say “well that’s just normal hormonal changes after a baby” and normally I would agree but I argue that the depo shot took her well beyond the “normal hormone” change. We’ve had four children and she only received the shot with one of the deliveries and that was the one that was abnormal from the others. The other three she refused to take the shot and she had no issues. It took her many years to get over much of the effects but some still linger. People with a rapid metabolism burn a lot of calories both in and out of the gym, and they may need to eat a lot to stay in shape; the poor lambs. People with a slow-coach metabolism, on the other hand, burn less calories and hence gain weight if they consume too many. What can be done to break the cycle? Make the weight room your best buddy, since gym gains might help you get back on track. Increasing your muscle mass is the most efficient strategy to speed up your metabolism. Muscles require energy to function, and larger muscles burn more calories than smaller muscles. Not only that, but heavy weight training sessions cause the body to burn more calories afterward, a phenomenon known as the ‘afterburn effect.’ So, rather than gaining weight on low-fat dressing, benching 150 pounds in the gym will soon have you torching calories from the luxury of your couch as your muscles painstakingly heal themselves. I first saw Dr. Lustig's videos about five weeks ago. I banished sucrose from my diet and have so far lost about 9 pounds effortlessly with no calorie counting or measuring. I found sugar laced in many of the so-called healthy foods I was eating before, such as cereals, snack bars, flavored non-dairy milks, and breads. I still eat whole grain carbs and fruit, along with vegetables, beans, fish, dairy, and eggs. The first thing I noticed was that I was less hungry throughout the day. I also notice an overall increase in energy and improved mental clarity. I was less tired in general and now I actually want to exercise. Before I had to practically kick myself to gym, and exercising only made me hungry.

It's been almost 10 years, the findings, his remarks are still stronger than ever. I'm hoping for an update lecture i.e. Fructose 3.0. Please make it 3 hours long if it needs to be hahaha, I can't have enough of his wisdom and experience.
Great video and very solid explanation of the biochemistry. However, I think the role of glucose is downplayed by Dr Lustig. Excess glucose causes rise in insulin which simple carbs like flour/polished rice do trigger. So even if you're having a fructose free diet but rich in glucose, you're definitely exposing yourself to the risks of obesity and metabolic syndrome.
Dear Dr Lustig, thank you for your great presentation and knowledge. I've learned many things even if I live and work near Paris, France. We now can act accordingly and be responsible for our acts. Best wishes to you and your family and team. I've seen your video on suger and fructose, I was shocked and really surprised. Thank you very much for all your inspiration. Thank you Dr. for your perfect explanation and for taking your time to inform the public on the connections between fructose, metabolic syndrom and deseases. Everybody should educate themselves on these subject in order to stay healthy and you are doing a great job into helping us do that!
I have been fighting my weight since I was 4. I was a skinny kid and then I blew up and didn’t know why, while consuming piles of sugar on my cereal, in my kool aid, everywhere. I had ballooned so big my scale would just error but while at the doctor they weighed me at 355. Type 2 diabetic of course, lethargic and constantly sleepy. I gave up sugar and carbs in May 2021 hoping to just get off insulin. Currently at 240 lbs and off insulin for the last few months. I’m working on building more muscle right now while continuing to lose fat, the difference in how I feel is mind blowing. I never knew the science behind what I had done to my body all these years, and the fact that food companies exacerbate it to the max for profit is just sickening. And then your doctor says eat less fat, as if that was the problem. It’s all about making that dollar to these people. They need to be held accountable for their part in this.
