I liked how the CEO said "This is a fun community" really captured his love for what he is doing.

Your flight was not for nothing. Goggles are the most expensive piece of kit I have for this hobby and I always felt that somehow it was a ripoff. It was good to hear the explanation about how if the price was bs, they would've been undercut by clones awhile ago.
@PIDtoolbox
@PIDtoolbox 6 лет назад
I totally get it. We sometimes think FPV is a big market, but it's really not. Must be a risky business to get into. Even if the HDOs are not the greatest seller (yet), they still help to maintain Fatshark's position as the top goggle makers

BWFPV it's a big market for fatshark they own the Goggle monopoly so apple politics are in place. 90% of FPV users uses fatsharks among all other brands so thier milking it imo idk maybe cause I'm Canadian and it cost 2x more than my rent for a $799 plus tax and shipping and over $100 for a diversity module. They included firmware updating amongst all thing I think that will ruin the user experience way more than a physical power button etc... Just saying
@PIDtoolbox
@PIDtoolbox 6 лет назад
ya, I hear ya, though I am not sure 90% of FPVers use fatshark, but it'd be worth a poll. They are no doubt friggin expensive (Im Canadian, and $799 is nuts), so the HDOs may never be in the price range for many FPVers, but for the extremely passionate FPVers with a little more to spend, HDOs might just be the thing. Personally, I probably would not have stayed in the hobby without a quality visual experience that a decent set of fatsharks give, but at any rate, wait a while and even the HDOs will get better and come down in price for the next great thing.

That economy of scale is VERY important, FPV is nothing compared to other consumer electronics. The fact that there are no good half priced knock-offs struct home for me. How much R&D has Aomway and Eachine stolen from FatShark?

They seem to have a, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", philosophy. To hell with any innovation and adding any newer or better features. People mess up and make mistakes. If we didn't we'd never learn anything.

i agree, but I'd rather have them around to learn when they can push it, rather than seeing them flop and not be able to make anything. still, come on Fatshark, they can change a little more than they are now. Sure, don't touch the optics. stick with what works there, but the electronics and shells around the optics need work, and they have the engineering to pull it off.
@beau6521
@beau6521 6 лет назад
So obviously the economics of it all makes sense, but to not add simple features like an in built fan, or power button has nothing to do with “kinks” or working out issues... it has everything to do with them not wanting to pay to have their injection mold remade to accommodate the design requirements. I can’t fault them for price, but don’t make me pay a premium and then not offer a truly premium product. It’s not just about the screens. It’s about the entire experience when I’m flying. I’m also a first batch HDO owner, so I think I have proper ground to make this statement on.
@RADERFPV

dude those injection molds are mid to high 6 figures to buy and 5 figures to modify $$$. it's not like they are selling millions of the damn things. I feel you but its still a balance.
@beau6521
@beau6521 6 лет назад
Tom Lee they aren’t 6 figures to produce and 5 figures to modify. If you don’t know what additive printing is then you don’t realize how cheap the production of R&D assets can be. I literally just finished building a facility that can produce a perfect mold in 18 hours with tensile strength significantly higher than necessary.
@DarynRod
@DarynRod 6 лет назад
Tom Lee I'm a tool and die maker. They're not six figures. I MAKE that tooling. On the subject. A guy here in Texas makes frames out of his garage. FlightClubFPV You may have heard of them. Mike had his own injection molds made for the Tokio canopy. But this company, with a FACTORY in China can't afford to MODIFY an existing mold?! BULLSHIT. They're afraid to take risks because they haven't needed to because we keep buying them.
@SurRealFPV

I think they could have kept the same shell and made the fan power from the main port and put a rectangle on/off switch where the balance plug used to plug in. What do you all think any reason that wouldn't work?

@@cinialvespow1054 The E Lizard 95 when the screws used were too long shorting out on the motors... mine is in a box waiting to replace the ESC if I ever get around to it... stock ESCs were weak so needs mod and better ESC, cam, vtx, probably just use frame and new motors with F4 stack... or put motors BG sent on something else but rather spend build time on something bigger. BG seems to have improved CService now and so many newer cool FPV toys probably will sit and use motors on a new project design... waste of money but it supported the hobby and BG supported the DEVO 4in1 upgrade board so it all works out seeing how far the hobby has come.

Great interview Bardwell, think you covered it perfectly. Certainly gave Fatshark a good image in my eyes, the guys spoke well and gave well explained answers. My HDOs shipped yesterday and I should have a RapidFire module on the way soon too, this will be my first FPV experience and I'm getting pretty excited :) As an electronic engineer working on large scale automotive projects, I know all too well how much work is required in testing and QC for even a minor feature change or addition, so I can see how this is even more of an issue for a lower volume company, for a relatively minor feature. I think you're right in saying that it's just not a high enough priority for them to warrant the extra work required.

Great video and delicate balance. While they claim to be all about user experience, all they're doing is making sure that the user experience is not as good as it could be. I feel the basic things like an on/off button and fan wiring is something that should be able to be pulled off reliably in the year 2018.
@gcutler15
@gcutler15 6 лет назад
This, honestly. It's something as simple as an inline switch and a few inches of wire.
@scootroter4859
@scootroter4859 6 лет назад
Yeah, how much R&D would it take to add an on/off switch and make the fan slightly better? Would it really take that much effort? Would it really potentially give them more places for a failure to occur... It's a switch, etc. ! Just think... If they had come out with the HDO's with the on/off switch and fan fix, what the reception to that new model would have been! Probably HUGELY popular and much more "worth the upgrade". Manufacturers need to listen more to the consumer, because I bet users would have been more excited about the 2 small additions than the upgraded OLED screens! Sometimes it's the small things that make all the difference! ;)
@gcutler15
@gcutler15 6 лет назад
Not to mention that OLED screens are something like $10 per diagonal inch currently. I highly doubt that the screens are what make up the majority of the cost of the goggles. So I wonder what the exact price breakdown of these goggles is. Maybe someone should buy a pair and send them off for cost breakdown analysis? Because I figure the cost of the injection molding is probably the only actual high dollar item that goes into these goggles considering the average cost to have an injection mold designed and produced is in the ballpark of $50k.
@Kabab
@Kabab 6 лет назад
gcutler15 once the mould is made it usually costs next to nothing for each copy. The screens are actually quite expensive. The crappy screens in the attitude V? are well over $150. The Dom V3 is over $170 and the HD anything is nearing or more than $200 in low quantities. At least based on the best of my research. I wouldn't be surprised if the OLED screens are as much as $210 or more. These screens are generally also sold as a finished component with lens and drivers all in a neat little case that can fit into your product. Fatshark claims to make their own optics but I've gotten some screen samples from manufacturing sources that had the same optics as far as I can tell. The issue is that it's a low quantity high tech component is very expensive to produce. These screens have a higher pixel density than any other screen in any other consumer product. They're also not used in basically any other products. So it's a highly specialized component at this time. All that being said, for $100 extra after all the rest, you could add in a whole lot more tech. I feel they would have been much more successful had they made a $600 pair that was actually excellent rather than a $500 pair that has a marginal upgrade. But of course based on their self restrictions they would never change too much. This is really all just speculation however

Oh wow awesome video thanks for that. My first pair of goggles were a pair of HD3 and after purchasing them locally I was a little bit disappointed as I have the blurry edges, one of the optics was slightly misaligned. That was where my disappointment ended. To my surprise I was able to pack them up send them express delivery within Australia just after the weekend and have them back in time to fly before the next weekend. Their customer service is awesome and their platform is solid!

I think I understand their problems for manufacturing. I work for an engine company and you will be surprised how many nuts and bolts designed in the 70’s are still used in this model years products. It’s cheaper to use the same parts than to design a new one every time creating a new part number, sourcing the vendor etc etc. They are designing products taking into consideration their vendor contraints (MOQ’s etc). But this is the catch 22 of being a small hobby supplier, until FPV becomes massive they won’t have the leverage to negotiate better MOQ’s on parts for example to produce different size housings. Interesting, thank you for the video Joshua :)

Joshua, great video! Thanks for doing this. I've long said that Fatshark is not gouging us, and I'm glad you had the chance to show everyone what is involved. I think something they're not mentioning in regards to adding things like a power button etc, is the fact that doing so would require new/modified factory moulds/tooling that would also be quite pricey. Just changing the insides allows them to reuse the ones they have. Most don't realize how expensive factory moulds and tooling are.

I think you did a great job asking the tough questions while not being obnoxious to Mr. Fatshark at the same time. No body argues about the price of a top of the line gaming computer, but yet the FPV community pitches a fit at the price for a top of the line goggle. I wish they were cheaper too, but you get what you pay for. That will never change.

The pricing issue makes sense to, though I would say there still a bit over priced and for that additional cost they should be willing to bring more improvements on each model they release. At their rate it will be 3 years before we have a power button and an internally powered fan.
@JaydenLawson

Good point about supporting companies that invest in R&D. This sounds like the GoPro pricing conversation. They are often the most expensive action camera on the market, but they probably spend the most on R&D and innovation, and their products just work. Clones are cheap because there is usually no innovation, only copying, and the user experience is often less than ideal.

There have been tons of reports of the barrel connector wearing out over time because they're not designed for that many plug/unplug cycles. Most of the time it's the battery that needs a new connector to be soldered on, but sometimes it's the goggle itself. That'd be fine on a cheap goggle, but when people pay $500 for a set, they expect better.

Great video man. I like many started this hobby with the cheapest pair of box goggles I could find. They worked okay for my first season of flying and solidified my decision to commit to this hobby. A full on commitment to this hobby usually means buying your first premium set of goggles. I was sure I was going to be buying fatsharks, and was going to be happy doing so. While at a local MultiGP race, I tried on every fatshark under the sun, only to be disappointed that my IPD was too narrow. No matter what goggle I tried I could not find a goggle that I could focus on. I ended up starting with the Flykeye Rafale goggles. They barely lasted a season before a major defect revealed itself, and the goggles rendered themselves useless. After 3 months of haggling with Gearbest customer support, I returned the goggles and got a refund, of which I felt fortunate to have even happened. This money went towards a set of Aomway Commanders. They have been performing very well for me and the quality seems on par. It's not as future-proof or adaptable to the changing technologies as the Fatsharks, but I've been happy. I do see the business model fatshark runs, and do agree with how they run, I'm just disappointed I didn't fit into it.

From an electronics guy of view, it is easy to apply a power button or switch. To adapt the shell and make another one that suits is something quite different especially in big quantities. For now they can use the shell of batches of the HD3's that they have. Like they say, they have to make an order of 5000 Sony OLED screens and take risks. So that means the risk of not being able to put in a switch because of the available space is there and having to change a mold just for a switch seems a waste of money. The chance of a button not working is low though. Most buttons can withstand a lot of pushes, some never fail and price is low. It's should be an easy modification if you want to do it yourself. That on the side, I love the new HDO's. Never had fatsharks before but the screen looks very good and the FOV is perfect for me. Just focussing is sometimes not 100%, that's what makes the EV100's so good => diopter adjustment. Although the screen is really small and bad quality compared to the fatsharks as is the comfort. A diopter adjustment system would be the way to go so everyone can enjoy without having to buy the separate diopter lenses. The premium price they ask is fair I believe, if more people would start into the hobby and buy the goggles, changes would go a lot faster. Nevertheless, the FPV hobby is not for the poor people on this planet. Chances that the market will "explode" and everyone wants the FPV experience isn't going to happen fast I believe. What are your thoughts?

4 years in the future I think they're points are still valid. The Walksnail Avatar Vs Fat Shark Dominator situation. Linus Tech Tips (easily the biggest PC channel) has gone over the cost of RnD, prototypes, having your manufacturer bail after a deposit has already been made due to a conflict in many different videos. One wrong step is 100ks worth of money. Fat Shark probably has less liquid cash then people believe.

This was not a good interview imo. You didnt challenge them as i really thought you would. When they say we dont want to do xyz because it cost to much is bs. They are just sitting pretty at the top. Unfortunately there will be no further real development if someone else does not take their business. Honestly im waiting for them to fall from their throne, then we may see something really innovative from them. There's only so much I can challenge them without just being a shit-head. If I ask them, "Why can't you put in a power button," and they say, "Because it's too risky," I can't say, "That's bullshit and you know it!" I don't run their business. I don't run any business. If he says it's too risky, that's your answer and you can like it or dislike it. My job is to ask the question and get the answer. I can only challenge the answer if it's factually inaccurate in some way, but assessment of risk or cost is not factual.

Great video! Really great to hear Fatshark's point of view. What I take away from this is their explanation on why they're not innovating as much. The fpv community is a freakishly tiny market in the ballpark of a few hundred thousand people around the planet which makes mistakes very costly. I also totally respect the focus on performance and reliability. I don't have time for dealing with cheap stuff that may or may not act up.

I can’t agree more with fatshark! Long time ago about 20 or so your biggest expense was a good transmitter, and u used it for along time, I used the same jr 2ch for 10 years. All were priced the same and to reach that level of quality it costs money but the people who complain of price are not looking ahead most of use only have bought 2 pair of goggles so if they last 5 years or more that’s great. But I do agree with a lot of people the powe button and fan are small changes that they could do easily. There are plenty of people doing these mods at home , and they have a factory

Some of the best most valuable info ever. I just bought my HDO's 2 weeks ago as my intro to Fatshark ( coming from Commanders). Expensive, and with the problems with the new module (LaForgeV4 cover is a piece of garbage, made me switch to Furious TrueD, much better made unit) made for a frustrating first experience compared to the Aomways ( plug and play ). That said, the quality of the goggles is apparent. I made my own power switch, and it's ugly as hell.But I didn't mod the goggles.

+Joshua Bardwell I disagree with him tho. Ofc you can introduce many areas for new bugs/errors but when it's unrelated components that you change in a product. It doesn't really matter. If there is an issue with the powerbutton. You will know 100% that the issue is with the powerbutton not the screen. The issue he talks about is only a real issue when you change components that are integrated with each other. That makes it difficult to figure out where the problem lies. Isolated component changes does not have this issue.

Good interview, nice to see things from FatShark’s perspective. However, I do feel like with their approach of only wanting to change one thing per iteration of goggles, it’s only ever going to be the screen side of things that changes. I’d rather see them pushing a few more features through and more advancements than basically always having the same goggle with different screens, I fear that some of the smaller issues will never get seen to. For example, you keep mentioning the power button, I have no problem with the lead system, makes it obvious when the power is off; integrating the fan into the main power supply would make things simpler though, only having one lead to unplug. My biggest hate with the FatShark goggles is the crappy, over compressed DVR. I would love to see FatShark add a DVR that records to be visually the same quality and aspect ratio as the screens. The number of times I’ve shown people who are interested in FPV the DVR footage and then have to explain that when you’re flying in goggle, it’s a way better picture. Space wouldn’t be an issue either, I’m certain a 32gb or even 16gb Micro SD card would be plenty big enough for a full days DVR. I’d love to see an updated DVR, even more so than changing the optics again. However, with FatShark’s current policy, I can never see this happening. If things like this are scary to FatShark, why not add a way of updating the firmware on the goggles? At least that way some issues could be resolved by a patch.

I liked the video thanks. I wonder if people who have installed diy power buttons have ever created a bug? We see pics showing off buttons all the time but I have not heard of problems. BYW I could care less about a button.

Nice video and the bottom line is, you get what you pay for. So I could purchase some off brand at a cheaper price, but when it comes to service, good luck with that.

i own the first hd's and love them! don't forget to mention you can buy a new module and be up to date. don't think you can say that about other companies? and you can just make a small pigtail with a switch.

Can't wait for the day when goggles really takes off and are as common as TV or mobile headsets. Then we will see bigger players like Samsung and Sony jumping into the fray with all their beautiful displays and design. VR is the first step to make it mainstream. Once the consumers are hooked and the numbers rise, they will be clamouring for smaller headsets. I would love to be around on the day when I can wear a Sony Made FPV goggles which has a power button, fan, hd resolution and accepts all the various inputs and modules with a super low latency all for the price of a phone accessory.

after watching literally dozens of videos on goggles and going from one end of the spectrum to the other, I will be getting Fatshark HDOs as my first set of goggles. As said here even goggles like the Aomways are just slightly less and the cheap end of the spectrum is not reliable. I hope to get my son and I involved in Quadcopters and I want the best experience for him and I. Thank you for all the work you do Josh you and the Rotor Riot crew have been alot of the videos I have watched as well as UAVfutures. Great guys and great community

JB really enjoyed the video. I do love my Fatsharks HD3. They are a little pricey , but I understand fatsharks point about keeping up with other companys in the FPV world. You conducted that interview like a pro! But it would be nice to get a freakin power button!!! Just saying.....😐

They mentioned immersion which made me think of your rapid fire interview, same again another wow product that's ground breakingly awesome.....? Well while watching your 4 module testing vid after the China "come and get ya module" visit I noticed there really wasn't that much to write home about, the rapid fire was as good as the other 3 modules but scarcely better, I personally thought the laforge did the best but again, only by a hair... I was watching with a slight grin as I personally have the laforge diversity on my HD2s

Most Successful Companies have some form of Risk Analysis . Especially the Higher the Cost of the Product the Higher the Cost of Failure or Added Cost of Recalls . Another Thing I feel is Important in this Conversation . Is a Persons Personal Barometer to Judge another’s Honesty & Experience with the Subject Matter at Hand . Perception is Key to Success also . Maybe One of the Reasons You & Certain Other’s have Succeeded While Other’s have Failed . Another Subject I would like to Touch on . Innovation in the Aftermarket . Aftermarket Companies Thrived because Companies are Content ( for Whatever Reason ) with What they Have . Complaining will Sometimes get Us What We Want ( Everybody Has at Least One of those in Their Lives ) Lol . Eventually Everybody Should Realize that They have Three Options : Continue to Complain ( Easiest & Most Used ) , Find Someone to do It for Them or Do it Themselves . I would’ve liked to See Fatshark Address the Issue of the On / Off Switch by Coming up with an Adapter ( for Now at Least ) to Go Between the Battery & the Headset . Think of How Many Generations of Goggles ( Not Only Fatshark but Other Companies as Well ) Need or Want an On / Off Switch . That Would Make a Great Video ( Hint Hint ) If Somebody Would Make One . Anyway ( Sorry for Rambling On ) Thanks for All You Do in This Hobby ... P.S. I Would Like to Give a Shoutout to ... RC Model Reviews .. He’s Back ( Even Though He is Struggling with Health Issue’s ) ... Please Like & Subscribe to His Channel ... It Will Be a Sad Day When He Decides to Permanently Retire from this Hobby ... It's rough for me. I wish I could try fatsharks hdo first because I have no idea what it looks like or feels like to fly with those. The price point is too high for me to risk it and then end up feeling stuck with something that doesn't work for me. I got a large noggin. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Think about the customer service you get with the price tag. My attitude v3's screens stopped working and within a day or contacting customer service we had arranged for them to be repaired. A week later they were fixed and back with me... free of charge repair due to it being an error with the goggles... I've had eachine products and had problems and never once got a reply from them...

I think that video was fair to Fatshark and consumers as well. It all comes down to entrepreneurial risk and as Greg French pointed out Fatshark cannot afford to take big technical risks that could possibly hurt reputation or finances. Still, I would love if Fatshark would be a little braver with small improvements like a power button, an OSD for band/channel/recording status and a DVR that does not skip frames and they would sell more if they did. How I know? Because owning an HD3 I will pass on the HDO because of these shortcomings.

I don't think you have to spend a lot of money into the first experience, to get fixed or not. I have started with a cheerson cx-10w with a cardboard mobile phone goggle. Total investment for this: 25.- bucks. It was crappy but also extremely cool for me. If I have had to invest 500 for my first experiences, I wouldn't have tried it.

First I'd like to say I want them to add fan integration & a power button, but come on people, how hard is it to plug in the balance lead? Or make your own 18650 pack with a power button?
@justindelpero
@justindelpero 6 лет назад
Cool, I enjoyed the vid. But I'm sorry I have to call bull in terms of not adding a power button nor internal fan power. These things are AU$900-1000 once you put a module in them and pay the shipping. Seriously that's a lot of money, I wan't to upgrade to HD0 from my commanders, but it will take a revision that shows some bloody user convenience improvements. To be honest, I'd buy HD3v2 if they were set at the current hd3 price but included user features such as powerbutton, improved DVR and In-built fan power. Midrange pricing is ideal for new comers, but they sabotage the midrange goggles, for example the attitude v4 module bay is not the same as the Dominator module bays, and the DVR is even worse (no audio).

Good video Joshua. I am one of those unfortunate people that would hugely benefit from a larger size case. I own HD3's and love them even thou they are not 100% fit for me. I understand Fatsharks position in the scalability of the production, but perhaps they could simply release a "bumper pack" (larger case and face plate) so that people buy normal goggle and transplant the guts to a larger case. Just a thought.

A point that was brought up was the fact that to get acceptable pricing on items, large quantities must be purchased which can be a significant investment and commitment. This could be the real reason the power button/switch and fan power has not been addressed yet. They brought up the fact they don't want to make changes because it could cause unforeseen issues. I find this to be a very poor excuse for these popular demand items and a much more likely reason is that they have committed to a large quantity of goggle shells that would have to change to make the requested changes. So they probably have a certain number of shells that will have to be sold before it's financially viable to make new dies for making the shells. I would guess, the old dies will have to be to the end of their service life before they will make changes to the goggle housing. This makes much more sense to me than trying to say adding a power switch could cause issues.

Great video... Fatshark are a great company with great products! And I have to say their service is 2nd to none, as good as Apple... And for me I don’t care about a power on button or the fan, and fortunately the IPD adjustment works for me... Finally, I am really happy with my HDO’s and my Attitude V2’s.

Just get some good box style goggles for less than half the price. Sure you won't look cool, but they work. Hard to justify the pricing for the not so high-tech product from a consumer point of view.

Does oculus have software? I mean I have the vive. There is no software. For them at least they have to be counting on hardware sales as their revenue stream. You already answered the question that the screen being so small is what makes that price so high... but that answer threw me off.

They should not be cheaper, from a business stand point. When you make the very best product, you should charge a lot. But as a consumer, yeah I want it cheaper. Also, there is nothing wrong with the hdo, it just has one really big new feature, oled, and not any new small new features. So if you are not interested in that one big new feature, it seems like a bad deal. So you should just wait for hdo v2 or hdo v3 when they start working on the smaller features.
