Fatal Fury Producer Is Still Unhappy Mai Was Not In Smash Bros. 

It's unfair that Shulk can prance around half naked but Pyrrah and Mythra got thights added and Mai is missing entirely

I blame the Cero ratings. Sakurai complained he had to censor many sprites, models & even guns because they were so anal about things

At least she appeared in Dead or Alive series especially in DOA5LR and DOA6.

The good boys and girls was not what Sakurai said it was bad translated. If you understand Japanese what Sakurai said was him taking a jab on CERO(Japanese ESRB). The reason was he said in interview CERO wanted to add more length of clothing for Palutena so you couldn’t see her underwear also that was the reason why Smash 4 was getting a little delayed

concidering Mai's outfit in Fatal Fury 3 (1995) is tamest compared to her original design, it still baffled me Nintendo didn't decided to use this one instead.

They could have used a variation based on the earliest, least saucy appearance, but then it would have undermined the iconography, so it's very understandable that she wasn't a stage cameo. Sad though, because I wanted to see her hanging off andy while cheering on the sidelines.

If they made Bayonetta work, they could have made Mai work as a background character at least.

While it would’ve been great to have Mai in Smash Bros, it’s kinda annoying that people keep bringing the “good boys and girls” quote which was pretty much a joke and I don’t think Sakurai had that much power in the matter.

From what I remember, Sakurai actually explicitly referenced the game's CERO A rating when explaining Mai's exclusion, but the English translation dropped the reference to CERO. It looks like past Fatal Fury games have mostly been CERO B. I'm a little surprised Sakurai wouldn't be okay with a Smash Bros. game receiving that rating even if the Smash Bros. games have consistently been CERO A in the past. It could maybe be a matter of it being somewhat of a headache for a game's DLC to have a different age rating to the base game. Who knows.

Sakurai has no excuse. There was nothing stopping him from putting her in his game in some capacity. He has his precious Bayonetta. He has his precious Palutena. He has his precious Xenoblade waifus. And he has Shantae. And the coup de grace is that Mai Shinarui's outfit is in Fall Guys.

it is i think somewhat a unhealthy mentality to have and encourage to be distressed by the pressence of genuinely good looking and usually by extension healthy woman fictional or otherwise which seems to be one of the main types of things that get censored like i get certain things shouldn't appear in games and such for kids but if its starts getting into teens and older categories of audiences shouldn't be nearly as limited especially if consider can have half nude (only wearing normal shorts) buff guys in practically any age category without issue but a female character with some noticable breasts and showing skin somehow is different

Mai definitely deserved to be in. Nintendo bending the knee is sad. They're still better than the competition but...

There are some official designs where she doesn't show any cleavage which should of had no problem to include her, but I think the biggest issue of her design is how much upper thigh is shown. Palutena in Smash 4 had to be modified in a patch that was only for Japan because she exposed too much upper thigh, due to Japan's CERO A rating being more strict. Ultimate would carry over this design in all versions. Looking at Spirits, some seem to ignore how much skin is exposed. The Great Fairy really shows off those butt cheeks, I'm surprised this one managed to get through. Fire Emblem Characters Tiki (Naga's Voice), Linde and Lyn also show a lot of upper thigh. Cammy seems to show the most upper thigh up to her waist in her iconic leotard. With the Fatal Fury Spirits, most of all the artwork comes from the Real Bout Fatal Fury games. Based on what I said earlier, from those games this is the tamest design Mai had, which could had meant she would of had at least a Spirit. Her outfit appears to also wear a leotard underneath her kunoichi dress, but only goes up to her breasts like a tube top, not that you would see it. For her model that would had appeared in the stage, I think they could had at least covered her thighs like Palutena, but also they could had easily hidden that detail by covering her thigh with one of her fans. Something so simple and they made it so complicated for no reason.

I'm sure of this chararcter did get in and was censored people would be mad about that. She not in at all and people are still mad. It's a lose-lose situation. I'm guessing the bigger issue was Cero than the SSBU team not wanting to include her.

It's because she is featured in just about every rule 34 or hentai manga comic (those are unoficial of course) so is an easy target. It does seem unfair given that bouncy boobed characters are the norm these days. She was the OG so going after her sets an example.

Since we did saw Andy and Joe had gotten new outfits in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves similar to like Terry got from Garou: Mark of the Wolves, I definitely wondered if the team will decide to give Mai a new outfit that fits in the Cero A age rating/Good Boys and Good Girls for the next installment of SSB similar to like the team who worked on Xenoblade Chronicles 2 made a Massive Melee costume for Mythra that Sakurai used for Mythra in SSBU since they were fully aware she was absent in SSBU due to her outfit and showing her skin had Sakurai to made her cut out of the game.

Honestly, if Smash Ultimate was rated T, ai'm sure Mai would've made it. But the games are aimed at older kids, not teenagers.

If they are worried about her outfit, they could have some other Fatal Fury characters strategically placed to reduce the amount of skin shown.

This does give me some hope for Mai to show up in COTW with nothing altered. Well except maybe her attire but I like for it to be tasteful.

I remember when this first happened, I looked up the SNK Wiki gallery and found, that while rare, Mai does occasionally appear in more modest outfits such as in some Fatal Fury artwork, her wedding dress that first appeared in KoF 2002, a casual getup from ending in King of Fighters Sky Stage, her New Year's appearance in KoF All-Stars, some bonus outfits in Days of Memories, and some Falcoon art. Or just have her in the kimono she wears before some battle. I'm sure with how important and popular she is, I'm sure that would have been a small price to pay to have her appear at all. That always bothered me since they mentioned her father and included the effeminate Freddy Kreuger knock-off.

It's all because of CERO obviously, they are very strict with ratings and what goes on in certain games. What is sad is I wouldn't be suprised if Sakurai actually wanted to include more charactres from M-Rated games like Doomslayer or an Assassin's Creed character but as long as CERO was in control they won't let him (Metal Gear Solid being an exception because of Brawl).

When games like Ar Nosurge get T ratings and is far more suggestive; this comes off as overly cautious self-censoring that didn't need to be a concern but some exec insisted.

Why's Mai being mistreated in her own franchise here. She's the Chun Li of SNK, and this is how they're treating one of their popular female fighters.

A lot of us were unhappy with it. I rather her get in with a slightly censored design than not be shown at all. (At least with mods we can fix the design afterward) FYI: That was a bad translation by the treehouse team. 0:37. Brawl and Melee were both rated T which wasn't an issue before now I guess, ironically Ultimate has more rated M characters in it than Brawl did.

I’m glad they picked terry. Mai is a fan favorite but not for her particularly interesting gameplay or story. In fact I’m surprised there wasn’t a more vocal demand for more beloved characters like kyo or iori

Guy's I'm telling you that if you support censorship like Smash brothers ultimate, your going to support things that the creators want to put in the games, when you support uncensored games, your effectively telling that company like Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft that you will make more money if you stop censoring your games. I promise you this they will not make a censored game if it doesn't sell well, but you have to leave a review to tell them why you won't buy it. When millions of players start saying the same thing, new games come out that are uncensored. Reviews are read by publishers of these consoles.

Oda's response here gives me hope that Mai will be in the new "Fatal Fury City of the Wolves" in her classic skimpy and overall heavily sexualized outfit, and not toned town. And while I do have some concerns about the new title, mainly the new female character Preecha looks like something a leftist activist would create, with her hair having similar colors to the trans flag. I'm still cautiously optimistic, and reserve judgement whether I buy the new game or not based on Mai and even B Janet's character designs revealed in the near future. Thanks for the story.

I actually dont mind that Mai isnt around. Like, she gets enough attention as it is, so I appreciate her EXCLUSION even if it means that people get salty about it. Heck even Oda sounds kinda salty about this.

I believe that in order to get Mai to appear in Smash Bros. as a cameo, Mai's sexuality has to be tone down to become a parent service type character. The producer or any writer for Smash Bros. has to give Mai a redesign that is sexy, but not too sexy for this work. Perhaps they can give Mai a leotard that is fully-covers up her entire rear, instead of a t-back thong she has in her original design. Any fanservice costume that lets Mai be sexy like she is supposed and pass the age rating for kids.

For one: who cares? We've already got more than enough female characters in SSB to begin with. For two: even if she did make it in, she would've needed to be censored, like Pyra/Mythra and Bayonetta were - ruining Mai's entire character design, just like with Mythra. If Mythra needed to have ugly black tights added (which goes completely counter to her being a Light Blade, compared to her Dark counterpart in Malos), then Mai would've needed something similar as well.

Well, they had to censor Snake's butt, so... yeah, makes sense. Lol
