Fatality rate in Hawaii due to distracted driving twice as high as the mainland 

I see it all the time. It's not just drivers, many pedestrians are always looking at their phones instead of what's going on around them.

It's not all due cell phones. Too many entitled drivers trying to do last minute cutting in dense traffic, running yellow/red lights, no signals, forcing their way into a lane instead of waiting in line like other drivers.

Pedestrians also need to stop and look when crossing the street without stoplights. This happens more often in the Kakaako/Ala Moana area.

I believe it. I see numerous drivers looking down on their phone behind the wheel its so dangerous.

It's not just cell phones that are distracting people... honestly in Hawai'i I've noticed people are blatantly not paying attention. For example today at Liliha st where the road goes onto highway next to the McDonald's overpass... the street lights were not on, so everyone had to give each other the right of away. 1 side goes, then the other. As soon as I drive after fully stopping and letting the other side drive, here comes this OBLIVIOUS old senile man driving through and almost hit me on the passenger side head on... then at the blaisdell center on the velocity side this guy almost ran me into the white poles because he didn't follow the road and kept going where it curves to the left just before the cross walk. That's just 1 day! Both people SAW ME and were completely oblivious. The driving tests in Hawai'i need to be checked because I have no idea how some people have a license out here, it's insane.

Increase punishment severity to reduce distracted driving.

As much as you can blame distracted driving, pedestrians need to walk on marked crosswalks and stop j walking

Hawaii drivers have THE WORST driving habits of all states. HORRIBLE driving habits.

Drivers don’t think about their car being a killing machine. Driving is a privilege and comes with serious responsibility. I realize pedestrians don’t pay attention when they don’t pay attention they leave their lives in the hands of the drivers. Drivers need to be extra cautious because of this.

Put the phone down and drive!! Focus on the road and drive!!

Too many pedestrians crossing anytime anywhere - every day I see at least 7 or 8 examples of pedestrians breaking the laws.

How many people do I see that think just because the phone is mounted on the dash near the steering wheel it better. Put the phones down. Any text can wait 5min - 40 min. I'm sure whoever you're messaging would rather you not reply for a few minutes than to never talk to you again. I also think it should be treated the same as if you were under the influence get charged with involuntary manslaughter if you kill someone when driving while distracted

Not just cellphones. How about road hazards causing drivers to make last second decisions

Exactly, every time there is something on the other side, drivers slow down to take a peek. If we all waste 5 seconds to look, it will collectively back up traffic unnecessarily. Pay attention and keep driving. There’s no need to look at something that doesn’t affect you.

I believe it’s also because the speed limit is lower than the mainland speeds. People think it’s slow enough for them to do multiple things at once.

Its numerous factors but to be honest, phones play a big part in accidents via the driver and walking pedestrian. Some people WALK and STARE at their damn phones when doing anything in the street. I swear, like zombies! I do go on long walks with air buds in, but I never stare at my phone (especially if its MUSIC I'm listening to). I tend to always be cognizant of my surrounding as much as possible! Please be aware of your surroundings!!

This is easy to say, but hard to do while on the roads. 😮

What about all the food delivery drivers? They have to look at their cellphone GPS maps while driving to follow directions to the locations! 😮

Distracted Driver mostly due to Cellphone texting while driving and Calling not using your eyes while driving 100% is the biggest problem. It's should banned punishable by law and mandatory sentence 1 to 2 days in jail if caught by police officer and need to attend 1 class of drivers education in order to drive again. Would you allow drinking and driving ? Or would you allow smoking Crystal Methamphetamine and driving? How will you teach the public the citizens of the state if you allow texting driving, Calling with no hands on the steering wheel? Practically everyone does it 3 out 5 people do it everyday.

Tourists renting unfamiliar cars that have TV screens in them What could possibly go wrong

They need to redo the road and cross walk so people can see that to low cost.

I have seen cops doing this by looking at their police laptop's in their cars while driving! 😮

If slower traffic kept to the right, there would be less accidents.

Ban automatic vehicles, bring back the manual 🤙

Since all this technology is being added to motor vehicles, how about having something in the vehicles operating system that prevents drivers from hitting ANY object on the road by stopping the vehicle completely until the object is no longer on the road. We are talking about pedestrians and bicycle riders. I do believe that this is coming but EV's with lithium batteries are not the answer until they find a better source for batteries.

Every other driver in Hawaii are either on their cellphone or distracted while driving.

Plenty stupid people on the road. I've seen many of them on their cellphone texting while driving

get into an accident, get your license revoked till you retake another driver course to get it back. thats just my opinion.

I almost got run over crossing south street at Auahi intersection. Only my decision to stop in the middle of the cross walk saved my life.
