great ensemble cast of character actors, they give a wonderful depth to each portrayal. A story that presents no easy straightforward answers to a terrible tragedy and that gives this movie a memorable long lasting sense of 'it could happen anytime, to anyone'...

Did planes have spikes on their noses? The whole plane is mocked up to look like a rocket!

@@idiokrat They had to make the plane fictional, for the noted reasons. I had fun trying to make out the mock-up: straight wings with added front surface; rear engines; the tail antenna; the nose. I liked the rear rockets, almost like jet assisted rockets--fun, cool. Also the background tarmac, if you look closely shows that it is also a studio stage mock-up. This was, is, a superb movie. Sadly, the subtext, was, is, very real...

Odd coincidence that this movie predicts two famous aircrashes in the 70's. One is the Tenerife disaster when multiple small errors accumulated and caused the crash near Spain and the other is Flight 401 near Miami when the pilots were distracted by a burned out light bulb in the instrument panel.

Wow, this was nothing like the book, Fate is the Hunter, by Ernest K. Gann. The book was awesome. After watching this mess of a movie, the one thing I can't figure out is who in the film-making chain thought it was a good idea to use a fake airplane with the engines mounted to the horizontal stabilizer? Were they afraid that if they used a real aircraft model they'd be sued by the aircraft manufacturer? I'd only recommend this movie to fellow airline industry employees who love poking fun at all of the made up stuff.

This movie makes more sense if you're old and remember the 60's. There was probably one major air crash every year involving a 727 or some other plane. There was no GPS or auto-pilot that could fly you through the waypoints on your navigation screen like in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Now aircrashes are extremely rare events and aircraft like the Airbus A320 are highly computerized and much safer.

In 70s there were quite a few crashes of a certain model of plane and also a lot if ship sinking events. Anyway, anything made by humans is not perfect, so just expect malfunctions and accidents will happen.

It was a different era. In the 60s, kids hitchhiked all the time and seldom had problems. Public places used to have manners, decorum, and responsibility for others baked in.

Unfortunately a stupid plot. Received bad review. Glenn Ford was wasted on this (did he need money?) Most other cast members are very so-so. The Rod Taylor role is really annoying.

No woke cops. Go through a police barrier and that's what happens. Cop was keeping scavengers, pick-pocketers, ooglers and gools out of the crash site. The police officer was doing his duty protecting the site so responders could do their job.

You mean, like portraying a woman scientist who is not behaving submissively or seductively? It portrays a greater range of women's roles than most movies of the era. Don't expect older literature to cater to your fantasies of a perfect world--it represents realistic types of the era. Our movies are already embarrassing with silly, unrealistic wokeness (like a black Achilles--cultural appropriation!)
